AU where Max kills Neil and Billy covers it up. While burying his father in the woods Steve finds him. Steve thinks Billy has finally snapped and fears the worst for Max specifically he runs to the home to get Max out of there. Billy running after him. Inside the Hargrove-Mayfield he finds a distress Max. He tries to drag her out of there, away from Billy, when she confesses: “I did it! I killed him Steve!” Steve freezes at this and the redhead hurries to her brother’s side.

“I won’t let you out of this house if you tell someone that it was her.” Billy would say thinking Steve would call the police about the murder. Instead Steve decides to become an accomplice.

Okay but imagine Steve and Billy start dating just after Billy and Max agree to ‘start over’, and then they have sibling fights in front of him, full of cathartic yelling and stupid insults that go on for longer than they should because Neil is gone and Susan’s at work

And once Max slams her bedroom door shut, ending the argument, Steve feels this weird mix of anxiety and jealousy because what the fuck was that about??

He’s an only child so he doesn’t know how vicious those fights can be, but also how necessary they are at the same time. Billy lights a cigarette and mumbles something that sounds like ‘annoying ass little sister’ around the filter but says nothing else, not until he mentions that he’s hungry once he’s finished it.

Steve is dumbfounded when Billy gets up to knock on Max’s door barely ten minutes later and asks if she wants to go to Dairy Queen with him and Steve.

And then he actually sputters when Max comes out, pouting and telling Billy that he owes her a cone while stuffing her feet inside her Vans, like they hadn’t been screaming in each other’s faces moments ago.

he becomes weirdly fascinated by it and eventually becomes used to it, to a point where he hides a smile behind his hand whenever they bicker and argue in his presence.
