Extra: I kinda lost the Alucard personality (I haven't seen or read Hellsing or this elf series), and the story became too long accidentally, but I hope you enjoy this!
You blinked as you looked at the basket left on your doorstep. Who could have left that? You looked around, trying to see whoever it was who had left the basket in front of the feared witch's doorstep.
You knew that the basket didn't just appear there; you lived alone in the middle of the thick forest that was rumored to be cursed by, well, you guessed, by yours truly. Even the sun’s light couldn’t penetrate the thick forest above you.
You were gone maybe 30 minutes… Or maybe 3 hours, but you had a good reason! You needed some herbs for your potions, and you lost track of time.
"What the Hell…?" You grumbled when you suddenly heard a quiet whine. Confused, you looked at the basket and noticed movement. Your curiosity got the best of you, and you reached for the purple cloth and pulled it aside.
"Oh-?"
It was a baby? A scarred baby!?
You stared eyes wide at this small creature, who let out another whine, and you frowned. Why on Earth did someone leave a baby with you?
"And who might you be?" You asked as if the baby could answer, but it only whined.
"Sorry, but I don't speak baby." You replied, and the little thing attempted to fit its whole fist into its mouth.
"Seriously, to leave a baby at a witch's doorstep!?" You sighed out loud, "Where is this world going?"
The baby giggled, but you weren't sharing its enthusiasm.
"Come on," You sighed as you set down your basket full of herbs and instead grabbed the baby’s basket's handle, "I'm sending you back to the village and-!"
You didn't get to finish the sentence as a piece of paper fell from the basket. You blinked as you picked up the note and read it.
'My name is Genya. Please take care of me, I have no home or family.'
"Huh…” You hummed as you looked at the mini human, “So your name is Genya?"
Hearing his name, the baby squealed happily as he reached for you and-!
"Ouch ouch ouch!"
He pulled on your long hair!
"Now now, Genya- Ouch- My hair isn't a toy!"
You gently took his hand and made him let go of your hair, making a small note to tie it up. You frowned as you looked at him and the note in your hand. It was obvious that whoever left him on your doorstep was desperate.
During your long life, you had witnessed these markings on a few people. They said that if a baby was born scarred or otherwise marked, they carried marks from their previous life with them.
Not many knew where you lived, as most people tended to avoid you and your forest due to your reputation… But your reputation meant nothing to this baby. This innocent baby that carried its past on its skin…
Never during your long, long life had you been bestowed with a child, as you had no interest in them… But maybe it was time for a change?
“Come on, Genya…” You hummed as you opened your cabin’s door and carried him inside so he wouldn’t get cold. That is how you adopted Genya.
The beginning was so chaotic. Despite being an old witch, you knew nothing about babies. Why should you have? It wasn’t like you had any friends to teach you or such!
…Or, well, you didn’t have normal friends, but you had some contacts.
Maybe that was one reason you took Genya in? Because you were lonely? Who knows?
You sought out answers from the other witches and wizards you knew, and they were very helpful. Some even came to see how you were doing. It also helped a ton to be able to use magic. It made your life a little easier.
Time passed, and little Genya grew into a fine young boy. He was extremely smart and adventurous, always eager to join you when you would go seek out herbs and such.
He was eager to learn also and you were proud to see him excel at his studies. You didn’t teach him just magic, but you taught him how to read and write. Yet he still insisted that you read him stories about life outside your woods.
“Mama, can we someday go out?” He asked one night as he looked at you from under his blanket.
“But Genya, sweetie, we go out nearly every day, don’t we?” You asked back, but the young boy shook his head so hard his mohawk moved, “No, I mean, somewhere where there are other people like us?”
“Well, I doubt witches and their apprentice walk around-!”
“Noo!” Genya laughed, “Where there are humans! Normal ones who can’t use magic like us!”
“Hmm…” You hummed as you pondered his words, “Maybe one day? When you’re bigger? Then we can go out on a real adventure!”
“T- Then I promise, I’ll get big really quickly!” He nodded while looking so determined that it nearly melted your heart.
“Aww, sweetie, take your time.” You said as you closed the book and put it away before planting a kiss on Genya’s temple, “You have no hurry to grow up yet. Enjoy your youth.”
“Hmm… Alright!” The young boy nodded with a smile, and you returned his smile before you got up and moved to the room’s entrance.
“Sweet dreams, Genya.” You raised your hand to air, and with a click of your fingers, the lights went out.
Time passed, and your sweet little Genya grew into a fine young man… But damn, he grew so huge! Did all humans grow that big? Was it something you fed him?
“Genya!” You called from your humble kitchen into the second-floor room that belonged to your adoptive son, “We’re having guests over!”
You waited for a second and another, and suddenly the door flipped open and Genya rushed down faster than he could fly with a broom.
“Guests?!” He looked stunned, “Really!?”
“Yes, your uncles are coming to visit us.”
“Uncle Urokodaki and Kuwajima?” Genya frowned, “I haven’t seen them… In ages?”
“Even better reason for us to tidy up the place!” You smiled as you waved your finger in the air, brooms, rags, and other cleaning supplies flying from one direction to another. The place was spotless already, yet you still insisted on cleaning and… Were you baking?!
“Mother, uh…” Genya looked nervously at how you had your nose buried into a baking book, “Are you sure you want to bake?”
“Of course!” You smiled, “I’m feeling confident today!”
“Uh…” The young man swallowed, “Mother, what if one of us focuses on cleaning and the other on baking?”
“You think so?” You put the book down, and he nodded eagerly, “Yes! I want to take some work off your shoulders!”
“Aww, you’re such a sweetie!” You smiled, and Genya sighed in relief. He loved you, he really did, but you weren’t really a baker. You could cook, but your baking abilities were… Scary.
“You go and clean, and I’ll get the cupcakes and cookies started!”
That… That was not what he meant, but he didn’t have the heart to tell you otherwise. So Genya sighed and grabbed a broom he was used to riding and started to clean the already spotless house.
After a while, there was a knock on the door, and you and Genya perked up immediately.
“Ah, they’re here!” You turned to smile at Genya, “Would you be dear and open the door?”
“On it,” The young man nodded as he put the broom away and went to open the door.
“Genya!” Jigoro Kuwajima, this small old grandpa, smiled as he saw your adoptive son, “You have grown! What does that mother of yours feed you with? Last time we saw, I could pick you up!”
“You have certainly grown.” Sakonji Urokodaki nodded, still wearing that red Tengu mask of his.
“Uncles,” Genya nodded respectfully, and made way for the two men, “Please come on in.”
“Thank you!” Jigoro grinned as he and Sakonji entered your humble home.
“Jigoro and Sakonji!” You laughed as you made your way to the front door, which Genya closed behind the two wise wizards. The three of you hugged each other and laughed like old friends.
“I’m glad to see you two!” You laughed, in good manner, “Come on in! We have cupcakes and cookies here!”
“Sounds marvelous!” Jigoro and Sakonji both nodded as they followed you into the kitchen, Genya following close behind.
“Your apprentice has grown!” The shorter wizard chuckled, and you nodded, proud of Genya, “Yes! My Genya flies the broom better than I do already!”
“That’s good! My Zenitsu is quite skilled with lighting and light spells!”
“Jigoro, you old goat, Genya here is a natural talent when it comes to magic!”
“My apprentices are doing well also.” Sakonji nodded, and you smiled, “Oh, Tanjiro and Nezuko, right?”
You looked at Genya, “You probably don’t remember, but you have actually met Zenitsu, Tanjiro, and Nezuko when you were still a small boy!”
“The… Kid with a scar on his forehead?” Your son could faintly remember Tanjiro, as he was very kind to him, while Zenitsu was afraid of Genya because of his scars, and Nezuko… She was quiet, but appeared nice.
“That would be him,” Sakonji nodded, and you giggled as you waved your finger and two plates filled with cupcakes and cookies flew to the table, “Please, have some sweets I made!”
The two older men shared a glance before reaching over, one taking a cupcake and the one a cookie. Genya wanted to warn them, but it was too late. Jigoro bit into his cupcake, and Sakoni lifted his mask enough to take a bite out of his cookie.
Your adoptive son watched nervously as your friends ate… And Jigoro laughed, “Ha ha, these taste just as good as I remembered!”
Sakonji nodded quietly, but Genya couldn’t believe what he was hearing and he wouldn’t have if he hadn’t seen it himself. Your baking was actually good?
“Please, Genya, have one?” You asked with a smile that made it impossible for the young man to turn down your offer.
“Thank you, mother…” He accepted the cookie and took a bite-!
“Hrugh-!” He nearly choked on the cupcake. The texture was right, but the taste was plain awful. What was that? Was that garlic and caramel? He had to force the piece in his mouth down, and even after swallowing, he was near tears.
“Some things just won’t change.” Sakonji nodded, and the short wizard sitting next to you grinned at you, “You’re best we know at alchemy, yet your cooking is barely edible!”
“Hey, I’m a good cook! I did keep Genya alive, didn’t I?” You pouted, and the men turned to look at your son.
“Mother is a good cook…” He nodded, looking visibly ill, “It’s just… Her baking…”
“Ha ha! What were you thinking, putting garlic in your cupcakes?”
“Or soy sauce in your cookies…?”
“Hey, I thought they tasted just fine!” You pouted, and that only made Jigoro laugh even louder as he looked at Genya, “You look sick, son! Did this wicked witch finally poison you?”
“Jigoro, you old fart.” You chuckled now also, unable to resist your two friends… Or their charm.
“Who are you calling old?” The old man grinned, “You’re 100 years older than me!”
“M- Mother!?” Genya turned to look at you in shock. You didn’t look old! If he had to guess, you could have passed as someone in their twenties! You giggled lightly as you raised your hand to cover your grin, “Genya, sweetie, we witches and wizards age differently.”
“It’s her baking,” Jigoro laughed, and Sakonji nodded, “They may taste awful, but they keep one young.”
“Really?” Your beloved son looked at you and you smiled, “I can give you my recipes if you like?”
“I…” Genya swallowed down air, which went down way better than your baking, “I’ll think about it…”
“Think fast, boy!” Jigoro nodded, “As the apprentice of the cursed forest witch, you gotta gather your belongings sooner or later and head out there!”
“Wait, what?” The young man blinked as he looked at you in shock, “Mother…? Are you…? Are you kicking me out?”
“No, no!” You shook your head, “I am sending you off to an adventure you always dreamed of!”
“Without you?”
“Genya, my dear sweet boy,” You reached forward and gently placed your hand over his, giving him a soft squeeze, “There is something you don’t know. A reason why I never took you out of my forest. Why you couldn’t see other humans.”
“What could that possibly be!?”
“Son, your mother is under the influence of a powerful curse.” Sakonji said, and Jigoro nodded, “She can’t leave the forest or she will cease being.”
“Even her baking can’t save her from that.”
“Then… Can’t you break it? The curse, can’t you break it?” Genya looked at your friends, who both looked sorry.
“We have tried, son.”
“But this is some vicious magic. It can’t be lifted just like that.”
“But…” Genya looked at you, expecting you to be heartbroken, but instead, you were smiling lovingly at him, “My Genya… You grew up so fast.”
“M- Mother…?”
“It’s okay, my sweet boy!” You cheered, “I want you to go out there and have fun!”
“But what about you!?” Genya snapped, feeling distraught, “I can’t just leave you!”
“Genya, you’re always welcome back home. I can’t leave the forest, but you can, and you can also enter it.” You chuckled, “It’s not like I’m going anywhere or dropping dead anytime soon.”
“But… It’s not fair for you…?”
“Life is not fair, son.” Jigoro said, suddenly serious, and Sakonji nodded, “But we will make the best of it.”
“So please, Genya,” You squeezed his hand, “Go and live for my sake also?”
“I…” The young man scowled. He was feeling so many emotions, anger, frustration, even sadness… But finally, he nodded, “Okay. I’ll do it.”
“That’s my boy!” You cheered, but before you could get a second word out, your son squeezed your hand.
“I’ll go and find a way to break your curse!” Genya snapped, “Then you and I can go on a grand adventure together!”
You blinked, stunned that he still remembered or held that old promise in his mind… Yet, you couldn’t help but laugh and nod, “That sounds really nice, Genya… Alright! Let’s do that!”
“Promise!?”
“I promise!”
“Son, if you want, we can take you with us now?” Sakonji asked, and your son blinked, “Wait, now?”
“That’s why we came here,” Jigoro said, “Your mother asked us to come and take you to civilization.”
“Mother?”
“No better time than the present, right?” You giggled, and Genya sighed. Of course, you would look after him and think of what was best for him.
He nodded as he got up and moved his chair under the table, “Alright. I’ll go pack my stuff now.”
“Take all the time you need,” You called as he left the room. You sighed as you watched him disappear around the corner, already missing him.
“Motherhood really changed you.” Sakonji noted with a knowing nod, and you turned to look at him, confused, “What? How?”
“You used to be so bitter, and all you did was sulk here.” Jigoro grinned, “But with that boy around, you’re almost like yourself… Before the curse, I mean.”
“Well…” You looked after Genya, “He is my sunshine, I didn’t know I needed.”
“We swear…” Sakonji and Jigoro both reached forward to hold your hand on the table, “We will find out how to break this curse Kibutsuji cast on you.”
“Just look after my boy, and I’m a happy witch.”
A moment later, you were by the entrance of your humble cabin, embracing your son as you got ready to say bye-bye.
“I’ll miss you…” Genya said as he hugged you tightly. You chuckled a little, amused by how the roles had been switched. How you used to hold him protectively, and now he was holding you the same way.
“You can always come back home.” You nodded and squeezed him lovingly, “But remember to have fun also! Life is too short.”
“Says the 700-year-old witch,” Jigoro chuckled, but you were too busy hugging Genya to care. You did give your friend a finger, but otherwise, you held onto your son.
“Sent me letters! I am eager to hear how your journey turns out!” You said, and the young man nodded as it was time to leave.
“I love you.” Genya said, and you smiled lovingly, “And I love you. Now go have fun!”
“Yes, Mother!”
“Alright, one teleportation magic coming right up!” Jigoro grinned as he used his wooden cane to draw a magic circle around him, Sakonji, and Genya. As soon as the circle was perfect, the light swallowed the three most important men in your life, taking them somewhere where you couldn’t go.
“Oh, my sweet boy…” You sighed sadly, “You’ve been gone less than a minute, and I already miss you so much.”
You felt sad, yet you couldn’t help but smile at the idea of your son thriving out there. Maybe he could travel with Jigoro’s and Sakonji’s apprentices? What kind of amazing adventures could they have?
Like you, Sakonji and Jigoro used to have? Oh, the memories.
You hummed as you went back inside, making sure to leave the door slightly ajar for your boy.
