women in art: romaine brooks (1874-1970)
romaine brooks was a gender nonconforming lesbian painter who, although reaching the peak of her career in the 1920s, seemed resistant to the trends of the day and instead adopted her own muted color palette of mainly grays, whites, and blacks. much of her art in turn explored gender nonconformity in women, and brooks spent much of her life in a same sex relationship with poet natalie barney. more on her life from the polk museum of art
