i made a thing today. i stacked stuff on stuff 👍

this is a little faceted vase i made. i learned from this that using a knife instead of the wire tool is easier if you are working on something smaller and more dense. if you are cutting thicker walls you can make consistent clean cuts more easily with the knife. i glazed this using shino because it has a lot of edges and surfaces and i know shino like to change shades on those edges.

ive learned that taking risks and getting out of your comfort zone is a great way to learn new things in ceramics. sometimes you have to glaze your pots in ways that seem ridiculous but end up being your new favorite method. or create a shape that you didnt realize you could create. sometimes you will end up hating it. but other times you discover new great things :) which makes it worth it

this is the first mug ive ever made. its such a great feeling using your own pieces knowing what went in to make it. i learned from making these mugs that you need to account for the shrinking that happens during the firing. instinctively i made the mugs to the size i wanted them to be when they were finished. they seemed to shrink quite a bit but it was a good learning experience.

super excited to trim and fire these warren mackenzie double rimmed bowls! its a very interesting idea to mess around with and try and make your own touches on it. its easiest to split the rim when the bowl is centered. and using the right tools gives you range on you execute it. the pinched points were also inspired by warren mackenzie

thought id share this to inspire people. sometimes i forget how far you can go when manipulating clay. the possibilities are endless. But for this video he showed good technique on keeping the piece centered and distributing the small portions of clay with purpose. there wasn't much clay he taken away from the original lump he threw on the wheel so he was very purposeful with what he did with the clay.

some awesome warren mackenzie inspired double rimmed pots. i definitely want to try this out. they even pinched the sides to break the double rim just like warren Mackenzie does. love it

i love how they made the lid of the jar sit below the sides. this is similar to what ive seen in a mark shapiro pot. the body of the pot has really nice flowing curves too. something i have to work on

Busy Bee Mug Recently I have been experimenting with combinining techniques for decorating my pottery. For this piece I carved the honeycomb and honey bees into the clay and then painted each bee with underglaze prior to the bisque firing. Fill this mug with coffee and you will be buzzing around like a bee in no time!

i love how they combined the theme of the honeycomb in their trimming and carrying it through with the bees on the finish. looks great

Church Key Technique by Lori Duncan Via Flickr: A common bottle opener, or “church key” is a handy tool to use for creating patterns in leather-hard pottery pieces. Care must be taken to avoid deforming the pot and to make sure the patterns are even around the pottery piece.

I have to say, the shape is probably on of the nicest I’ve thrown so far. I’m going to miss this lil’ guy. But it’s going to a good home, so I have to say goodbye.
