she   knew   she   had   been   dragging   her   feet    in    regards   to   announcing   their   engagement.   perhaps   she   just   wanted   to   hear  it   from   his   own  lips   that   this    was   something   he   wanted.   and   perhaps   she   was   simply   trying   to   defy   the   nobles   as   long   as   she   possibly   could  out   of   SPITE.   but   time   was   running   out,   and   she   needed   their   support.   “   tomorrow   evening,   ”   she   repeated   with   a   smile   and   the   swift   nod   of   her   head.    “   only   if   you’re   content   with   being   humiliated.   ”

their engagement had been long and drawn out but in his mind he was okay with it. it gave nadia the time to fully come to terms that she was going to welcome a king to her reign and it gave him the time to comprehend his new station. he stayed close to her, his lips curled into a soft smile as she confirmed their plans, he was eager to get back on a horse and any moment he was able to spend with her he was grateful. “humiliated? my queen... you show ill faith in me.” he scoffed.

perhaps   that’s   why  she   felt    so   good   about   this,   that   she   was   certain   it   would   work   ––– –   because   she   didn’t   doubt   him   at   all.   it   was   the  noblemen   she   doubted,   herself  that   she  doubted.   though   there   was   nothing   she   could   do   about   that.   “   tomorrow   evening   ?   ”   she   questions   with   the   slight   arch   of   her   brow.   “   well   you   are   in   for   a   surprise   …   because   i   am   a   glorious  rider,   ”   she   assures   him.   “   might   even   be   better   than   you.   ”

aleksander knew that at the end of the day he had a friend within nadia and this marriage would not be one he regretted. even if a love did not blossom he trusted her, he didn’t feel forced to be by her side and he was grateful. “tomorrow evening.” he confirmed with a small smirk. he arched his eyebrow at her remark, humming a bit as he crossed his arms. “oh is that so? i’d really love to see you in action then, see if your words are true. perhaps we can put that to the test” he hummed.

“   i   know   you   have,   aleks,    ”     she   assures   him   softly   with    a   smile,   “   i   do   not  doubt   you   in   the    slightest.   ”   all   the   doubts   she   harboured   were   directed   to   herself.    “   it’s   been   …    quite   some   time   since   i’ve   done   any   of   those   things,   ”    she   admits.   back   home  in   poland   she   found   herself   relaxing   far   more   than   she   did   here   in   paris.    “   you’re   going   to   teach   me,   are   you   ?   ”   her   smile   widens,    “    i   can’t   wait   for   my   first   lesson.   ”

“i’m glad you do not hold doubts with me, nadia.” aleksander grinned with a bit of a laugh, his eyes kept on the queen. he admired her, usually from afar, but being before her was almost a dream state. she was elegant and carried herself in a manner that was intoxicating. “oh has it? we must fix that, perhaps we must not wait to go home.. i’m certain i could arrange a few horses tomorrow evening.” he grinned. “and of course i’m going to teach you, can’t have you falling off.” he purred.

“I’m aware, Nadia had a lot of stories to tell about you when I first took over as her guard, I spent most of my time ignoring her back then.” Back then he had been twice her age and she was just an annoying kid, but as she had grown and matured the two of them had luckily found something more to talk away. “I’m just glad she’s marrying someone she could perhaps have more than a political future with.” It pained him to say so, but he really did want Nadia to have a future that was filled with love and happiness. “I guess that’s what happens when you become queen so young, I’m amazed the nobles have let her go without a husband so long.” Looking back at Aleksander the male fixed a warm smile on his face. “I never doubted that it would.” 

“She has grown into a women I admire, as i’m sure you do as well. She did tell me about that though, though I do not blame you. She is headstrong, opinionated.. probably my favorite thing about her.” Aleksander hummed and laughed a bit, his head low as he thought about her, his head soon lifting. Jasiel’s words hit him in an odd manner. There was potential for a union past simple politics, something he would love but never force. “Only if she wishes to hold that much of an intimate relationship. I would never force love upon her though that is something I hope for as well.” he admitted, his fingers fidgeting with the bow still in his hand. “Well they have been pushing for our engagement to be announced for years now, my father has been very impatient about the matters too. I’m certain he’ll jump with glee when he hears the news, the nobles as well. Won’t be surprised if they fix to have the wedding when we step off the boat.” he scoffed, a bit of a roll to his eyes at the statement.

“   it   will   become   clear   to   you   eventually   ––––   but   telling   me   not   to   worry   will   do   no   good,   ”   she   assures  him.   worrying   was   second   nature   to   her.   since  becoming   queen   she  had   become   over   analytical,   over   critical,   and   second  guessing   every   decision  she   made.   all   she   did   was   worry.    “    yes,   i   am   well   aware  of   just   how   much   fun   you   can   be,   ”   she   can’t   help   but   chuckle.   he’d   never   changed,   always   been   this   way,   genuine.    “    if   you  consider   mischief   fun  that   is.   ”

“of course, i am aware. of course i will require your help.” he hummed with a soft smirk. aleksander at first glance did not resemble a king. he was far from that title but he would shape up to be one, with time, with learning. he held her hand in his own, smoothing over the skin with his thumb. “you know i’ve been under control since my arrival, nadia. fun can be more than causing a bit of trouble. have you ever ridden horses by the water? taken them on a ride in the trails? picked up a bow and arrow and just relaxed for a few? i’m going to teach you how to live a little, my queen.”

“Because she trusts you.” They had spoken of many nobles who could fit the position, men from Poland, men from afar, men that were older and had more land, more to give to the crown but at the end of the day Aleksander fit the bill just fine and Nadia trusted him which was the most important thing. “No we wouldn’t, she may have been born into her crown, but she’s the wisest queen I’ve ever seen.” In all their meetings and travels, he didn’t doubt Nadia was the best ruler he’d come across. As much as he liked Aleksander, he didn’t want to spend all that much time with him for his own irrational reasons, none of which he could voice so instead he gave a small nod. “I am sure I can find some time for you Aleksander, can’t have the King of Poland showing us up with poor swordsmanship now can we?”

“We grew up together, i’m certain your aware.. She was and still is my very best friend. I do hope this does not ruin that.” Aleksander breathed his concern, unsure why but he had to get it off of his mind. He did not want Nadia to worry about his concerns, he would remain strong willed, he could not show hesitation. “Wise beyond her years.” he agreed and looked to his feet, allowing his thoughts to flee from his mind. Jasiel was a man who would always be around and he figured he might as well attempt to know him though he had a creeping suspicion his presence was not enjoyed by Nadia’s side in his company. “I appreciate that, Jasiel. Your help will not go unnoticed.” he promised.

Maisie stared at her former fiance, his hand outstretched toward her. Taking it would mean leaving the past behind them, and she was ready to do that. With a a deep breath, she reached out and let her hand be dwarfed by his. It was warm. Comfortable. Familiar. “What have a missed? Still trying to climb into higher ranks?” 

Aleksander was grateful for the tension drop between the pair, he knew their shared past was something discussed very little and he wanted to avoid it. he held her hand in his own and pulled her off in the direction of seclusion, somewhere their words would not be listened to. “I cannot lie that my father has been fighting hard for my marriage to Queen Nadia. He wants me to be as high as I can get and it appears he may get his way.” he breathed, guiding her off towards the gardens. “And what of you? Still running around free, explore any new countries?”

“So long as you remain the best option for Poland, and for Naida, then I most certainly share the opinions of the nobles.” Jasiel spoke softly as he looked back at him, he could sense the males worry and gave a small sigh. “If Nadia thinks that you are the right choice, then you are fit for the station, you will be a fine king.” He assured him, before a chuckle followed his words. “Well there are worse things you could be up too I suppose, drinking a little too much is nothing.” As the arrow hit it’s target the male shrugged his shoulder and smiled, shaking his head. “Not showing off, it was probably a fluke, I’m better with a sword.”

“I still don’t understand why I was chosen.. I am grateful, do not take my words for the opposite..” Aleksander breathed, his eyes set on the forest before him. His mind was clouded with irrational thoughts over the idea of a crown sitting on his head, he cared for Nadia, truly, though he was terrified the change in status would ruin the bond they held. “I suppose you are right, Jasiel. If she did not think I was suitable we would not be holding this discussion.” he muttered before his eyes fell back on the guard. He watched him move from his shooting position with a small grin. “That is a skill i must work on, suppose you can’t find some time to teach me?”

it   was   nice   to    hear   it   from   his   own   mouth.   it   was   something   she   needed   to   hear.   it   made   her   feel   better   about   it     all.   and   she   trusted   him   as   well,   perhaps    that   is   why    she  was   so   quick   to   ask   him   here,   to   ask   such   a   request   of   him.   “   i   wanted   to   be   sure,   ”    she   says,   “    once   it’s   done  –––   it   cannot   be   undone.   ”    when   they   were    married,   he   would   be   king,    until   the   day   he   died.    “   i   don’t   think   you   realize   what   you’re   doing   for   me,   ”   she   spoke   softly   with   a   smile,    “    you’re   allowing   me   to   marry   someone   i   trust.   rather   than   someone   forced   upon   me   by   the   nobles.   someone who   …   see’s    a  crown   and   nothing  else.   ”

aleksander had been prepared for a moment such as this since he could understand politics. his father had informed him that he had a job to marry and there was nothing he could do to change his fate. having this duty did not seem so bad when it meant spending a lifetime by nadia’s side. he could handle that. “you mustn’t worry about me, nadia.” he hummed. though he knew once the marriage was finalized and the status bestowed upon him became legitimate he would most certainly panic. “you are also helping my family and i, for that i owe a great deal of gratitude.” he breathed, his hands folded before him with a soft smile on his lips. “i give you my word our marriage will not just be a formality. you know just how much fun i can be.”

“   i   would   actually   …   like  to   ask   you   a   question,   ”    she   says,   turning   to  face   him   fully,   “   and   i   suppose   it   is   political   in   nature   so   you   will   have   to   forgive   me.   ”   her   hands   play   with   the    fabric   on    the   skirt   of   her   dress.    “    i   never   truly   asked   you   …   if   this   is   what    you   wanted,   ”    she   began,    “    in   regards   to   …    well,   marrying   me.    being    poland’s   king.   you   are   one   of   my   dearest   friends  …    i   would   not   ––––     want   you    to   think    this   is   something   you    must   do    simply   because   i   wish   it.   ”

as nadia spoke he felt his stomach stir but turned to look at her, giving her his undivided attention and respect. “of course you may, do not ask for my forgiveness, speak freely.” he smiled a bit, his arms crossing over his chest as she posed her question. if he was being honest he wasn’t ready for this change in station. he barely was able to handle the job of a noble though he could not admit this. “even if i had the choice to leave, nadia, i would not. while my anxieties over this are high it is important for me to... marry you. while it is something i worry i will not be able to do well, i trust you.” he spoke carefully, reaching out to take her hands in his own. “i am doing this for you because i want to.” he added, a soft smile on his lips.

Maisie was glad that she looked well. Or that he thought she looked well. She was well. There were moments when she wished she was back in Scotland, but everyday was an adventure and she kept busy. Plus, there were tons of new people to strike her fancy and keep her entertained. As the youngest of three, she didn’t have many responsibilities that required her time the way the eldest did. With the exception of a few courtly duties, she was free to explore and do as she pleased. She was well. “Yes. I am. Still adjusting to this temporary home. Not as beautiful as Scotland, eh? I miss the green. Perhaps we should sit somewhere and catch up, yes? I’m sure much as changed since we met last.”

Aleksander still held a great deal of respect and admiration for Maisie. She had once been his very best friend, someone he spent months alongside while their families negotiated their potential marriage. Though it fell through he longed to rebuild the friendship they once held, part of him still feeling something for the redhead who seemed to be afforded the luxury to be herself. “Scotland does hold a special spot in my heart.” he chuckled, taking a moment to think back on his time in the country before looking back up at her. “I’d enjoy that, follow me?” he questioned, offering his had for her to take.

his   tone   about   jasiel   didn’t   necessarily   go   unnoticed.   though   it   confused   her   to   say   the   least.   she   knew   the   rumors  that   circled   the   two   of   them.    though   she   did   not   want   aleks   to   worry    about    that,  or    listen   to    mindless   gossip.    “    he   is,   ”    she   agrees   with   a   soft   smile.    she   glances   over   at   him,   noticing   his   smile.    “    i’d   love   that,   ”   she   tells  him,    “    we    can   make    time.   politics   can   wait.   ”

jasiel was a good friend of aleksander’s, he appreciated his presence in france though he couldn’t help but notice the closeness between him and nadia. though the noble had no room to talk, his priority for his queen was her happiness not his own. he pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind and let out a soft laugh at her words, rolling a bit on his feet. “politics can wait.. i enjoy that statement coming from my queen. if that is what you so desire, what would you like to do next?” he questioned, turning to face her fully.

“I am sure you will do a world of good for Poland.” He didn’t doubt that of all the choices Nadia had, Aleksander was one of the best ones and he knew that he would do what was best for the country. “What trouble have you already gotten yourself into whilst you’ve been here?” The male asked with a raised brow, he probably should have paid attention to the other things that were going on at court, make sure he was keeping up to date with all the other happenings, and the troubles that others were getting themselves into but he was always so busy. “Oh you don’t have faith in me?” He asked with a small chuckle before he lined his shot up, releasing it and watching with a smile as it soared to the center of the target. 

“I surely hope your opinions are shared with our country.. I cannot help but fear for my future if Nadia chooses this path, if I am meant for this station.” Aleksander breathed, his mind drifting elsewhere before he recollected, shaking his head a bit as he brushed his fingers through his hair. ”Nothing drastic, few too many glasses of wine at one of the gatherings, other nobles are not too fond of me.” he chuckled and pressed his lips together. He watched closely as Jasiel took the shot, his eyebrow lifting with a soft sigh of appreciation. “Would you look at that.. Not too bad. Showing off a bit I see.” he hummed with a wink.
