Four years ago, Smythe announced he would be running for Mayor against his predecessor, David Zises, whom, according to the polls, he defeated by an impressive margin. When Smythe took office, Lima went from a weak-mayor form system to a strong-mayor form system. Smythe is currently up for re-election against one of David Zises' long-time friends, Burt Hummel.

Hello, Becky. How nice of you to take the opportunity to write to me. Between you and me, I hope I beat him as well. But, for now, I simply take pleasure in knowing that I have the support of such a lovely young woman!

Your son is a demon

My son is an upstanding young gentleman who holds himself and those he associates with to the highest of standards. This, I have no doubt, could be misinterpreted by many but he has the best of intentions. He reminds me of myself at his age.

Also, I was there when he was born and I can assure you, there was no pentagram or candles.

Why should a greaser vote for you? Surely greasers are better off with a greaser mayor. How will you improve the current situation in Lima for Southsiders?

Thank you for your questions. It’s nice to see that there are people who are as invested in our beautiful city’s future as I am.

As I’m sure you remember, our former Mayor was a Southsider and, I must point out, a change did not happen. In fact, the number of violent incidents increased during his term. So this is not a matter of who is from the Southside and who is from the North. What truly matters are the intentions of each candidate.

I’ve made it my duty to do all in my power to ensure the safety of every Lima resident. Yes, I am aware, and I understand, that there will be people who would not be pleased to have me continue on as Mayor.  But you, all of you, are my driving force. I want this city to be one that we can be proud of. One without the violence and fear. And I know that you all wish for this as well.

It is this desire, to have a peaceful city without the drugs and brutality, that will earn me the Southsider votes because they, much like Northsiders, are done with the cruelty. At the end of the day, all of us want to feel safe in the place that we call home and I will do anything possible to make that a reality.

My love for this city and the people within it goes beyond where someone resides.

How do you feel about Sebastian running for McKinley High's Class President?

To put it simply, it fills me with pride to know that Sebastian has chosen to follow in the footsteps of the Smythe men that proceeded him. I, myself, was Senior Class President. As was my father before me. Sebastian is a true born leader and there is no doubt in my mind that my son will ensure that McKinley High School becomes a much better place under his influence. I consider this merely the start of Sebastian’s political career. One day he will be Mayor himself. Perhaps more, if he so chooses. After all, ‘Smythe for President’ has a nice ring to it.

Why should the people of Lima trust you with the city when things haven't changed in the past, Mayor Smythe?

To put it in bluntly: because there has never been a Mayor like me. While my predecessors were content with leaving things as they are, my goal is to make Lima better than ever by leading its population into a bigger, brighter future. First, by first tackling the violence within the city. Whereas we all wish that change could be achieved over night, the reality is that change takes time and effort. There are many steps that have to be taken before we can find the solution to the problem in its entirety. As your current Mayor, I have already begun to take the necessary steps to improve our great city, and if I am re-elected, I can continue to make progress, and eventually, Lima will be everything that it was destined to be. By electing Burt Hummel, all of the progress that I have made will not only be halted but undone and the last thing I want to see for the city that I love is for it to take ten steps backward. You trusted me enough to elect me the first time, please continue to trust me to be the true beacon of hope that Lima desperately needs.

Mayor Smythe, what sets you apart from candidate Hummel?

I’m sure Mr. Hummel has the best of intentions in running for Mayor, but what he lacks is the experience needed to help guide this city. I’ve dedicated my life politics; to be a shining example of what this city should be and have worked to make Lima a better place for years in and out of office while my opponent has only recently taken interest in our city and its youth. I do applaud his efforts, but I truly believe that our city will only regress with his election while I intend to lead us into a new future.

What would you say to those who consider you an elitist?

What others claim to be elitism, I consider pride in my city and the people within it. Have I shown a preference to one side over the other? I will not deny that I have, but how is my appreciation of the Northside any different than those who value what they have in the South? I am a mere man and I have flaws, but this is not one of them. I think of this city as a whole, and I pride myself in being as unbiased as possible.

Who are the shining examples of character and integrity in the city?

This is quite a difficult question to answer because there are so many people that shine within the city. Such as the Westons who frequently provide the city with means of improvement. The Andersons with their kindness and appreciation for all the good that we do. Now, I’m afraid the father in me has to make an appearance because I am exceptionally proud of my son, Sebastian. He, much like myself, wants to see a change in Lima. He has planned a New Year’s Bash for all the youth in the city, Northsiders and Southsiders alike. It is an opportunity to have both sides under one roof with the simple intent to enjoy the night and rejoice that with a new year may come a new beginning.
