A Letter to My Daughters, Page 1
To my girls, my beloved Irain, Katrina, and Adalyn,
As I write this letter to the young women I know you are going to grow into, you are just my precious little ones right now. Youâre about nine months old and happily playing in our house with your nanny Alicia Murrow. If the gods are kind, then I will still be around when you read this, but I wanted to write to you now; not as the good mother I hope that I will become over the years of raising you, but the scared mother who prays every day that she doesnât make some horrible mistake.
I love the three of you more than I can even begin to describe, potentially more than there are words for in existence. I want you to know that the three of you changed my life in ways that I never imagined. As you grow up, Iâm not sure what kind of woman Iâll be, but before you were born, I was the type of woman that would run off on an adventure for the Durmand Priory without a momentâs notice. Now I pray every day that I am a good example for the three of you.
Forgive you mother for rambling on over the course of the next few pages, but I canât help myself. Lately Iâve been wondering what you three will be like when you read this, so I thought Iâd tell you what you were like right now.
Irain, my love, even so young, youâre already so serious. Youâre too young for us to find out what is on your mind when youâre staring intently at any of your toys, your sisters, or us. What thoughts go on in that tiny, developing mind? Being so serious, you remind me of your mother Mirex, and I canât help but think that youâre going to be the ringleader of your sisters, so I truly do hope you take after Mirex in being the responsible one as well.
Katrina, sweetie, youâre going to be a handful, I know it. Even knowing that, I look forward to and will cherish every one of those moments. For some odd reason, youâre always in such a hurry, as much as one can be as a baby. By the time youâre reading this, I pray youâve outgrown your habit of eating as fast as possible.
My beautiful Adalyn, what a treasure you are. As you grow up, I wonder if youâll always be so calm and patient. You still have your fussy moments, as all babies do, but for the most part, you are so quiet that I find myself looking at you frequently just to make sure youâre alright.
Perhaps this is enough for one day, for one page. Again, just know that I and your motherâs love you so much and we are so grateful to have you in our lives. Sure, you didnât get to choose us to be your parents, but weâre still grateful nonetheless.
