Marina’s audacity is inspiring. She has shown she can turn something from nothing, sometimes in controversial ways, but to put her body on display like she has requires so much strength and courage. Her unorthodox upbringing, like her mother forcing her to straighten up her bed in the middle of the night, clearly has led to her distinct view and takes on performance art, striving for absolute perfection, yet abstract, with every display. The moment shared with her former lover at the minute of silence table was incredibly powerful, as evident through her obvious emotion.

I love the idea of performance art. With no boundaries or conformity, your expressions are truly unlimited. I really enjoy the two-way street performance art is, bringing the artist closer to their audience while giving the audience a real life look into what may have been once considered “behind the scenes”. This form of art opens doors for individuals who may have not have considered themselves “artists” before to really embrace their creative style and start performing in public. I liked the comparison of performance artists being able to manipulate any material they choose to, such as a video editor creating their final product. The fact that world masterpieces were developed from ideas from performance art is incredibly inspiring, such as the Italian Futurists creating manifestos and performances before their sculptures. The disappointing aspect of performance art is that if it was not documented somehow during the performance, there is really no way to carry on it’s legacy beyond word of mouth. It is very interesting to consider the parallels between different forms of expression today such as protests and similar displays, to their founding of performance art in early history, again like the Italian Futurists who performed politically motivated displays and ultimately led to WW1.

After reading Cubitt’s excerpt again before posting this last night I almost scratched it for something else entirely, something darker and more sinister. However I decided to stick with it because I enjoy the almost-contrasting mood this piece gives from Cubitt’s. A more calm peaceful feel, expressing transition through color and light, with human and light itself vanishing and becoming.
