Stolen Art

Hopefully people will bother to click the link to this profile to even read this. I feel rather than arguing against people I’m best to just explain myself. If you believe that I’ve stolen art, message me on Discord and we can have a discussion. I conducted myself poorly with some of the insults I threw out on the art thread, but I felt slighted and I felt that people were comparing my art that is original and my art that is edited. I still have a couple of the ‘in progress’ photos saved that I sent to my clients, if this is something you’re interested in seeing, I also encourage you to message me on discord. 

For those that I’ve insulted, I’m sorry. I have a bad temper and I’m proud of the art I commission. I did not properly cite the album I posted in the commission link, and the MOMENT someone told me this I removed those posts and left the citations to my TRP album and a personal album I share with friends -- the photos there were found in the album. 

I have screenshots of the same photos in question that I’ve sent to friends prior to all of this blowing up where I clearly state the photo is a reference or an edit. If you’d like to see these screenshots as well, message me on Discord. They’re all dated prior to Thursday.

Some albums on Imgur had citations and this one didn’t. A mistake I fixed as soon as someone told me. I’m not proud that things have been so poorly misrepresented, but all I can do is speak the facts: I made a mistake. 

If you believe this was of malicious intent to get people to buy from me, I have three things to say: 1) I received no business after I posted my commissions/edited arts, so even if you absolutely think this is the case (it’s not), I didn’t benefit. 2) As I’ve said before, the moment I was aware of this miscommunication I fixed the problem. 3) Those that have actually bought my artwork will gladly tell you about the process I used and the step by step creation. 

I don’t think Tumblr is the best space to have this discussion. A few people have reached out to me already to ask for my side and I am deeply thankful. This situation is not black and white, and while I haven’t read any of the newer posts, I cannot handle the mob mentality I’ve already dealt with. 

If this is TRULY something that outrages you. If this makes you want to punch me square in the face, then I think you should, again, message me on discord and be willing to have a discussion.

I put the art I used as Alex references as well as my original art in the same album. In some of my albums the source is sited, in this particular one it wasn’t and that was an oversight on my part. Upon being told, I IMMEDIATELY fixed the issue. An honest mistake. That post is only a few days old and I’ve gained no clients since then. But instead of letting me argue my point, I was removed from the server.

You keep calling it your “original work.” Nothing you have is original. Absolutely none of that Photoshopped, MS painted over garbage is original work. It is photos that you didn’t even bother to trace to learn anatomy, or study; they are literally just photos you Googled and didn’t bother to learn attribution or license for. So, in all respect, you probably stole a photo that belonged to someone else and made money off of it. That’s stealing. You can’t take a sweater from Old Navy, dip it in red paint, and sell it like you’re the one who made it. Doesn’t work that way. 

To make you less ignorant, I highly suggest you look up this: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/ because in the end, if any of these artists don’t have certain attribute licenses (meaning they permit others to use their work for commercial use – which is what you were doing by trying to get money for commissioned work that was not yours) you’re stealing. Regardless, what you did quantifies as absolute theft. 

So, lets look at the “original artwork” you were displaying as “commission examples.” One of them came from this lovely person: https://jellyxbat.deviantart.com/art/Triss-Merigold-679966887 Nowhere on this page is there anything that says: “Take my stuff and use it for commercial purposes.” Now, you can say that you were doing it to showcase your talent (quick note: this isn’t talent, not by a country mile), but her permission to use her picture in any way, or to manipulate it in any way was never given. When you take something without the person’s permission – we learned this in pre-scchool – is called stealing. STEALING. You were using it to try and dupe people into believing you painted this. All you did was paint OVER it. That’s not art. 

This is absolutely your way of obtaining attention. None of the work in your supposed commission portfolio is original work. None of it. You took other people’s hard work and then painted over it. This art here, which is absolutely amazing and I think everyone should commission her when she’s open (she was Kazence, but I think she’s since changed her name) cost me $35. For this ORIGINAL piece. It was well worth the money and then some because it is clear she took her time and didn’t scalp off someone else’s work. Her style is prominent, amazing, and this is what people look for in their artists. 

tl;dr: You’re a scumbag so stop trying to justify your bullshit behavior.

So I’ll say nice try and welcome to Tumblr, but folks have the receipts and no matter how you try to spin it?  You are just plainly in the wrong.  Both Renna and Diermina put that far nicer than I’ll bother trying.

Again you are referencing photos I use for personal reasons to represent my character. The moment I was told the album was misleading I fixed the mistake. You can speculate on my intentions all you want. I think the fact that I thanked the person who messaged me how the album was misleading shows I had no ill intentions. I just put all of my art (art I use for Alex, art I've commissioned, etc) into an album and made an overlook.

Now if you'll grant me that, we can move onto the ethical discussion of my non-commissioned work. Yes I edit photos, yes they sometimes don't look so great, and yes the photographer wasn't cited on that particular album (which I immediately fixed.)

I see people use character references all the time of actual people. The target against me must rest on the fact I edit the photos to more accurately depict Alex. Sorry, but when something is clearly an editted photo I assume people are smart enough to know that it must be a character reference and not original art.

Sweetie pie, you’re not fooling anyone. Anatomic perfection and a fundamental lack of understanding of form, function, and values don’t mix. That just doesn’t happen unless poor photomanipulation is involved, and every single one of your pictures is painted over and/or pasted from a collage of stolen images and ran through a filter and smudge brush. You claim to be a beginner, and that is very clear in the glaring mistakes made in areas that are not relying on a photographic base. The photographs are different from the original artwork/images because you reverse them in an attempt to hide your tracks, overlay lazy pre-rendered hair brushes and smudge a few features around. You could have a lot of skill if you used the undoubtedly excessive amount of time it takes to cheat and cover your ass and instead studied the basics. Taking payment (upwards of $80, apparently) for artwork that is 95% not your doing makes you, in short, a scumbag. I think it’s time for an apology and some introspection, but I think I know what you’ll continue to do. You’re one of many, and quite predictable.

@diermina i'd also like to add that I flip the works I do in order to get an objective view and find my errors.

This is why a lot of us don't prefer flipped versions of our faces. We are not used to it.

You can also insult my techniques if you want. I'm a beginner, and I learned from a few videos that the smudge tool, in combination with the right brush, can create hair effects.

Apparently you missed the part where I said my original work is different than my edited work. I think the strongest case I can make for myself is through the two people that have bought from me, for they have seen the process from beginning to end. All edits, vectors, etc are always spoken about with the client first before done.

The art that I sell and the art that I use for myself are entirely different animals. If you bother to read the full sentence of the giant inflated words it says “Art is referenced in my TRP” and if you’ve ever looked at my trp, you’ll see that it is. How miraculous. 

I put the art I used as Alex references as well as my original art in the same album. In some of my albums the source is sited, in this particular one it wasn’t and that was an oversight on my part. Upon being told, I IMMEDIATELY fixed the issue. An honest mistake. That post is only a few days old and I’ve gained no clients since then. But instead of letting me argue my point, I was removed from the server. 

Please contact me next time before “signal boosting” a false ad.

1) the photo is in the public domain and I don’t redistribute. It’s for me, and for you guys to see as a reference. Yes I edited the photo, but only so it better represented my character.

2) I encourage everyone to look at my original artwork and compare to the obviously edited photograph. They’re entirely different. All commissioned art is original and walked through in a step by step fashion. 

3) To say I was trying to gain attention to my art by mixing original and edited work is foolish. The album was simply a full collection of all of my warcraft character arts. Again, one I was told this might be confusing to some people I edited the album for clarity (but I bet they don’t tell you that story, huh?)

Hey dudes, I already reblogged this shit, but I figured I would give a more in-depth explanation about this since I’m the one who reported it and I’m ‘Abyssinian’ in the images. I noticed her post in an art discord and clicked on her link to see her ‘work’. It looked off to me so I asked my boyfriend and another friend to take a look at the art to make sure I wasn’t being some salty asshole. After about five minutes, my boyfriend found those two original pieces of art and linked it to me. So I sent a message to one of the mods and then a message to Alex herself.

I’ll be more than happy to supply anyone with our whole conversation but for the sake of keeping it brief, I’ll just show you the messages I got AFTER she had been banned from the discord and I was raiding. 

Case in point, don’t steal someone else’s art without their permission. Don’t get salty because you were called out on it. 

Oh and Alex? Rennali is my waifu.

3) My commissions are 100% original, but of course you won’t share those because you and your clique love to shame anyone who hates you.  How about you reblog the work that I’ve done for other people. This so called “scam” of original work. How about you reblog the photos of my step by step painting process I walk all my customers through, hm? You know, where I work from scratch and have them tell me what they want before making it?

Setting the record straight 1) There is a vast difference between the art I sell and the art I create/edit for myself. The album listed had both, and when pointed out how this could be misleading for what I was selling, I fixed the problem. 2) “Credit is given in my art link” isn’t the full sentence, which everyone can clearly see. If you’re going to try to make me out as some monster, at least try to cover up the quote you’re cherrypicking from.

3) The image isn’t copywritten and it’s not protected as intellectual property. If you want to argue legality, you’ll lose. If you want to argue morals, you have no ground to stand on. It’s a representation of my character /i/ use. This is not a distributed work. 

4) It’s quite clear that this is an edited photo. It’s also quite clear that my original work is painted. The album listed was simply a collab of the art I use for Alex and the art I’ve made for others. If you want to talk morality about using ‘uncreddited art’ for my own character, we can, but don’t you dare imply I don’t bust my ass off on the commissions I sell.
