On our second day in the wilderness, Denali graced us with its presence. Any chance to see this massive mountain of ice and glacier is quite special! It would be several more days before it popped out of the clouds, but I'll save those images for another time. A perfect reflection with vibrant sunrise hues. This was after the autumn portion of my trip, where I had driven far enough south that things looked and felt more like summer. An overnight hike took me into a magical valley that was just bursting with autumn color. My original plan was to get up early and hike up for a higher vantage point, but when I saw the lake before dawn I stayed right there. With a truly flawless reflection and mist rising off the surface I had my shot figured out! I should probably start developing some of the film from earlier in the summer too, but this fall stuff is still fresh in my mind. Dinner with a view! After a day of hiking, biking, and more hiking to get around I was heating up my late evening meal. Mashed potatoes if I recall correctly, which were actually pretty amazing after all the work. The main hope was that Denali would pop out of the clouds, but instead I turned my head 90 degrees to the left and saw this brief splash of light hitting distant peaks as fog started to move around the valley. Things happen fast out there, but luckily my camera was already set up. I know there's an ektar version of this shot, but who knows when I'll pull it out of the developer! I've already begun working on the mountain of film to develop, sticking random sheets in the developer and seeing what surprises turn up! It'll probably take a month to work through the full stack but I'm already happy with this one. I took the risk of shooting almost straight into the sun, but it looks like E100 took it like a champ! The hazy days of summer. It seems that wildfire smoke has once again engulfed most of the western states. While I've been lucky enough to stay out of it this year, the last several summers have been a constant battle with smoke that is often too thick to breathe safely. During one of my backpacking trips I decided to just embrace the conditions and photograph anyway. This forest had burned down about 15 years ago and made a fitting foreground. . On another note, it's almost time to head home from my long Alaskan summer/fall trip. Over 400 sheets to develop so you can bet I'll have frequent posts soon! A brilliant rainbow beams out of a storm while outflow winds get a windmill spinning. It's always a thrill catching a rainbow on large format film, you often really have to work for them! I put on rain gear and walked out to this scene and made a best guess at where the rainbow would appear. It was the last storm of the evening so the sun was bound to come out and make the magic. Well, the storm really started pouring and then turned to hail as I waited. The rainbow appeared but I couldn't do anything, strong winds kept blasting rain into my lens. I had to wait and wait, luckily the rainbow really held out for a good while! A massive monolith in the center of a high mountain meadow. Camping among these pillars made for a special night, and the sunrise was quite spectacular. A quick storm passed over and drenched me while backpacking, but an hour later made for a delightful sunset over these rock formations at the top of a high mountain. The last week has finally brought some thunderstorms, along with a few rainbows! I decided to go about this image differently, really bringing attention to the evening light on this old grain elevator and the sunset rainbow. Last week I hiked above the trees to spend the night on a mountain top. Unlike anything I've seen before, this peak was more of a wide plateau covered with a mix of meadow and rock garden. From above 12000 feet I could see endless mountain ranges in all directions far off on the horizon, so I included a panorama version for you to swipe through to see more detail.
