Matthew looked at the young speaker for a minute, considering. He wasn’t sure what he’d even really do. “I could demonstrate some dance moves in a story or something,” he suggested, “but I don’t know about a full takeover.”
“That’s a start.” Alex tilted their head at him. “But think of how cool it would be to show what you do at work on a day to day basis!” They nearly bounced. “Think of the young want-to-be choreographers, they would love it!”
Darcy paused. “There are different types of accounts?” she asked. “Should we reschedule until I can get a notebook and highlighters or something?” She laughed to hide her embarrassment at being so bad at this.
Alex paused a moment, waiting to see if Darcy was joking with her first question. “Um... Yes. You can set it to say you’re an actor, or a blog, or a company. Stuff like that. It’s super informative. I can help you set it up, if you want!”
“And here I thought that was the YouMeScript extension for Google Drive,” Darcy said, matching their laugh. “But alright, teach, whenever you’d like, let’s get class in session.”
“Okay, I don’t even know whatever that was,” Alex said with a chuckle. “First things first, do you have your own account set to a business account? Because if not, you should. It lets you see your insights and demographics and stuff.”
“I mean I know of them, I just haven’t used them,” she clarified, laughing at Alex’s enthusiasm. She shook her head at them. “Oh goodness, what have I just agreed to?”
“Me, teaching you about a great and popular platform.” They let out a quick laugh. “Only the best information of your life.”
“Are they?” Darcy asked. She mostly just went through instagram and liked photos. She wasn’t big on stories. Most of the stories she caught up with were the ones she saw posted to tumblr or facebook after the fact. “You gotta draw up a whole lesson plan for me, then,” she told Alex, smiling sheepishly at them.
“Yeah! They’re like short snippets, and they only last a day, unless you save them.” Alex grinned at the mention of a lesson plan. “Oh my god, I could so do that. I’d give you screenshots and diagrams and everything. It would be so cool!”
Darcy laughed. Alex seemed so excited and she was not about to let them down. “Okay then, if you’re going to be there to help, of course I’ll do it,” she said. She shrugged at Alex’s explanation. “I have no idea how stories work, honestly,” she admitted. “It’s mostly just posting cat photos and tbts for me.”
“Well, I’m sure people will love to see your cat.” Alex let out a smile. “And of course I’m going to help, don’t worry!” They tilted their head. “How have you gone this long without using stories? They’re basically essential.”
“Okay, sounds fun! Is there anything specific that usually gets a better response from the fans or anything? I was about to grab a smoothie or a celery juice maybe. If you join, you can tell me all about the account and such.”
“Yeah, that sounds good!” The mention of something nutritious reminded Alex that all they had consumed that day had been a sleeve of pringles and several cups of coffee. “I can show you anything you wish!”
“Don’t lie to me Alex - how bad was it really?” Nora’s just curious now, as she was already beginning to get over her onstage mishap. “I just hope I don’t become a meme or something, I don’t know if I could handle that.”
“I mean, the show just finished, so no megasix has popped up yet.” Alex looked down to their phone, opening it to scroll through Twitter to see if any had been posted. “I doubt you’ll become a meme, Nora. And even if someone does make it into a meme, it won’t gain much traction.”
“I can’t believe I fell during the megasix — it’s so embarrassing. Now it’s going to be on YouTube for everyone to see.” Nora frowned as she began to take the pins out of her hair, pulling out stray pieces of confetti as she went. Maybe she was being a little dramatic, but it had hurt when she’d slipped on the confetti.
“It’s not that bad.” Alex winced slightly, despite their words. Not for the first time, they were glad about working behind the scenes, instead of in front of the curtain and on stage. “People will forget about it soon enough. Don’t worry.”
“Uhhhhhhh…” If Gabe’s hesitation sounded like a vaguely quiet scream, that’s because it was. Wasn’t the whole point of being up in th booth to not be in the spotlight? No one wanted to put their attention on the lighting nerd. He’d feel bad saying no to one of his best friends, though, “I mean, if you really want. What do I have to do?”
Alex grinned, ignoring his hesitation. “Yes!” They pushed down the urge to raise their fist in the air. “You just post on the stories throughout your day; show some behind the scenes, answer questions! That kind of thing.” Alex gave a small shrug of their shoulders. “Super simple.”
Darcy closed her notebook and greeted her friend with a smile. “Hey!” she said. Upon hearing Alex’s request, she made a face at them. “Alex, you know I’m terrible at Instagram. I mean, I’m game, but I’d need a lot of help.”
“Good thing I pretty much majored in Instagram.” Alex grinned at Darcy. “It’ll be so much fun, and I’ll be there to help!” They tilted their head, looking at the blonde. “It’s pretty simple, you know. You get to post on the stories and answer fan questions!”
Andie pulled one of her earbuds out and smiled at Alex, “Hey!” she said back. She listened to Alex’s request and shrugged at them, “Yeah, sure no problem. I can do that. Just, um how exactly do I do that? Like what do I need to do?”
Alex grinned at the woman, nearly bouncing. “Oh yay! It’s pretty easy- we sign you into the official Six U.S. account, you take everyone around on your day with you, answer some questions, do a live if you’re up for it!” They were making motions with their hands as they spoke. “I can walk you through it and everything!”
Gabe’s eyes widened and looked around. Up, down, side to side. Who was Alex talkign to? Not him, certainly. He pointed to himself, “Me? You want me to host the instagram?” Who would want the perspective to the lighting guy? Gabe doesn’t add to his surprise.
“Yeah, obviously.” They rolled their eyes. “People loved the last time someone backstage took over.” Alex looked pointedly at Gabe. “It would be great- you can show them your special lighting board or whatever!”
“Hey!” Alex bounced up to the person- hopefully not interrupting whatever they had been working on. “Would you be up for doing a takeover on the Instagram sometime soon?” Takeovers always increased activity on the account- fans loved getting to see behind the scenes and the daily antics behind their favourite show- and they loved seeing how much work went into putting on the show every night.
