the last thing nellie wanted to do was go to work on her birthday, but unfortunately one of her co-workers had called in sick & no one else could cover. thankfully it was only a few hours, but the lunchtime shift always seemed much longer. now in the last half hour of her shift, the rush of customers had significantly died down. she was stood behind the bar, fingers tapping rhythmically against the cool surface in an attempt to subside her boredom. the sound of her name being called made her jump, but a wide grin spread across her face as her boss told her that she could go home.
a sigh of relief rushed from her lungs at the sight of her house, fingers eagerly pulling her keys from her bag as she sped up. the brunette had no idea what she was about to walk into, expecting to find alex & lilah watching a movie or something. stepping through the door, an eyebrow raised as she heard the sound of music coming from the kitchen. hanging up her bag & jacket, she made her way down the hall, only growing more confused the closer she got to the kitchen. eyes widened at the sight before her, but before she had a chance to say anything, lilah had noticed her. the small girl jumped down from where she was & launched herself at nellie in a flash. “ happy birthday, mama ! ” tiny arms wrapped around her, covering nellie in chocolate as she did so. “ gracias, bebita ! ” she laughed, picking her up & squeezing her gently.
“ what the hell have you guys done to my kitchen ? ” she asked, still laughing a little as she placed lilah back down on her feet. “ dios mío ! ” her head shook at the sight before her, wide eyes landing on alex, arms about to fold across her chest until she remembered that she was now covered in chocolate. “ you know this is my favourite shirt ? ”
unaware of her approach, alex had twirled delilah on her stool, catching her easily as the little girl dizzied and fell. he laughed, picking her up to hold her at his hip as he inspected their bowls of mixture. nodding his head, alex looked to delilah for her approval. “what do you think? should we bake these now?” after a fervent nod from the little girl, alex set her back down on her plastic stool and took out two baking tins for the oven. he let her go first, allowing her to pour her mixture with his own hand keeping the bowl steady just in case. she seemed happy enough to let him.
they had one cake in the oven at least, by the time nellie had walked in. as soon as delilah had seen her mom, she’d gone flying into her arms, making alex grin to himself. he gave the two a moment, making a face to himself as he heard the exclamation from nellie. he pushed the second cake tin into the oven and stood up, arms raised defensively as he turned to two of his favorite girls. “we’re making birthday cakes!” alex beamed at her, his face full of amusement that was overriding his ploy to feign innocence.
“honestly,” he started, walking towards the two, “ the shirt looks great. really. great shirt. right delilah?” the small girl was still beaming at her mom and alex took that as confirmation as he approached them. his hand reached for one of nellie’s that she hadn’t managed to fold across her chest and he gently tugged, pulling her into a spin as if he were showing her off. “happy birthday!” he said, laughing.
