Character Summary:
Alexander, known by most as Alex was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, although his mother's family was from Holloway. His grandmother adored the small town and she was always telling stories about her life there. Alex is the youngest of two children and is incredibly close to his older sibling who has always stood by him. His parents were modestly wealthy, his father owning a company in North Carolina and his childhood was happy, busy and full, even if Alex had his own personal struggles. He was loved and encouraged throughout his life, whether that be in school or with his hobbies. He has always been creative and smart. He was never a child who enjoyed riding a bike or climbing trees but he could always be found drawing or using his dad’s old camera. He loved comic books and superheroes and would spend his time writing and illustrating his own stories. Whenever he was feeling upset and angry at the world, or even if he was having a good day, he would write comics that portrayed how he was feeling. He called it his picture diaries, which he still uses in his adult life.
Alex had always been close to his maternal grandmother who was an established supernatural author and he loved the stories that she told them growing up. His grandmother encouraged his passion for his comics and art from a young age. After his grandmother’s death two years ago, Alex decided to write a comic series based on her novels and the stories that his grandmother had told him. His favourite story was that of a woman and her vampire lover. What Alex didn’t know, is these stories… were not a work of fiction from his grandmothers mind. They were her grandmother’s precious memories.
Shortly after his seventeenth birthday, Alex came out as trans and his parents helped him to start his transition. Two years later, Alex was already a lot more confident in his own skin and happy to be Alex. He needed some independence and enrolled in Duke University for his creative writing and art. It wasn’t too far from home, he could drive back to his family but it was enough for the next chapter of his life. He took part in many groups at college, writing, art and support groups for people like himself. He shared his love for his comics and had aspirations of becoming a counsellor to help transgender youths like himself.
Although he can be quiet in nature, Alex is kind, protective, playful and even a little rebellious. He enjoys being with his friends and family and likes to think he has a pretty good sense of humour. He continued to grow and find Alex throughout university. He found his style, he enjoys wearing leather jackets, getting tattoos and even riding a motorcycle. Though really he is gentle and would describe himself as a teddy bear. He’s sensitive, sweet and really cares about those in his life. He continued to work on his comics and he won art competitions for his stories and drawings.
College gave him many opportunities to explore his talents. He studied art and creative writing at college and put his focus into his comics. He is a talented artist and often does illustrations and graphics for extra money. He spent a lot of time with his grandmother who encouraged his writing and graphic novels.
With his degree and art talents, Alex got a job as the manager at the local comic bookstore in Holloway. It was nice to be in his grandmother's home and it felt like fate. He felt so close to the stories she had told him all his life. He is now 27 and is comfortable in who he is. He recently received some family money and bought the comic store. He enjoys his work, family is important to him and he is excited to see where life takes him next.
