Media ethics challenges
The changes happening with media:
Day after day, the media changes according to the changing circumstances of the world. Media today is not the media of twenty years ago because of the emergence of new media technologies and the entry of new media. The media changed, accompanied by the emergence of the citizen journalist, who became the biggest challenge to the ethics of media through his ability to communicate on all media platforms.
The situation has become inconceivable how information can be transmitted from one country to another and very quickly through the media, and we cannot understand the extent of the harm of this information, for example, if it was misinformation. The media has become discredited on some platforms and lack clarity and transparency in most platforms, and the media has been used to spread hate speech as it is now when the global media attacks the Chinese.
The ethical challenges media:
-The Corona crisis created many challenges for media ethics because of the flow of information, which contributed to the spread of rumors, disinformation, misinformation and propaganda.
-In the countries of the Middle East, they lack freedom of expression, or in other words, the media regulations are getting tougher.
-The policy of some countries that prevent some important information from reaching the media, for example, concerning the numbers of casualties and the number of deaths for political purposes.
-The world became thirsty for news due to the Corona crisis, so most media outlets compete to provide news and information in order to obtain audiences or opinions and some resort to distorting the facts, and publish it before the official media publishes it.
-As I said earlier, people are thirsty for news of the Corona crisis, but after this crisis ends, what will happen? Interest in the media will decrease, so this is one of the challenges that shows that the audience's period of interest in the media is very short just to satisfy their desires.
Understanding:
As we try to preserve media ethics, there will be challenges that prevent this from happening.

The two hypotheses
hypothesis 1 - Citizens have the right to know:
To keep things fine, citizens need information and details that can help them to keep life going smoothly without there being any problems. These details are very important and difficult to obtain by the media.
These important details can only be obtained if the information is clear and transparent, so citizens have the right to know, for several reasons:
1- If citizens have the right to know, then they will have opinions in the issues that arise, and they will have an opportunity to influence decision makers.
2- It gives citizens the ability to hold leaders and managers accountable, if they don’t do well, and this is only possible if the media is clear and transparent.
3- Citizens should be able to know what their government has discussed and produced.
4- If the media is clear and transparent, this will be a way to prevent corruption.
5- If the media is clear about the direction of economic and investment matters, citizens will contribute to finding solutions to develop the economy and also, this will help them know the fate of their future.
hypothesis 2 - Citizens do NOT need to know:
It is better for citizens not to know about everything because this is appropriate for their interest. Keeping things hidden from citizens is important for several reasons:
1- Protect citizens from the revolutions that will occur if they discover secret information.
2- In politics, transparency and clear may hinder effective government and democratic practice.
3- In some cases where transparency clear of data is abundant, this may lead to increased publication of documents, financial accounts, blogs, and international standards. In fact, it leads to:
- Obfuscation rather than clarity, to increasing uncertainty rather than calming it.
The best solution to balance:
- The citizen has the right to know about the economic, social, educational, health, financial, and other aspects, but in the political and security field it is preferable not to inform the citizens of all the details because they are sensitive.
- We need transparency and clarity in matters that can help us improve our lives and live comfortably, but we do not need to know about matters that could harm us in the future.

Comics in the time of COVID-19
Analysis:
All pictures advise the audience indirectly and in a fun way about the dangers of the Corona virus and the speaker in those pictures is Corona, like: "If you do that, you will bear the consequences and these consequences make me happy."
There are no discrimination or stereotypes.
what made me choose these four illustrations?
the way it was designed attracted me, whoever watches these images cannot skip them without knowing what they stand for, due to the idea that attracts those who see it, so I chose the best illustration in this account.
The interaction was significant in the official account of the Gulf Health Council for these illustrations by the public.
And the other reason, these four pictures are all from the same account on social media, which brings together all the Gulf countries, so I chose them because they offer one view that brings together the views of all the Gulf Cooperation Council countries on common health issues.
My Views/ Understanding on the use of such cartoons and illustrations:
In light of the development of the media and its technologies and the emergence of digital design programs, they have contributed greatly to spreading awareness through them, because their effect is beneficial and can change the behavior of society, provided that the content of these illustrations and cartoons is attractive.
The four pictures I selected are all comical and fun, so anybody see it, they will have a reaction to these illustrations because they are influenced by it.
The information in these illustrations is very simple and easy to understand by the target audience.
The method of designing these illustrations and cartoon characters makes the audience take the situation seriously, through the content of these illustrations and the message that the institution wants to deliver to the public.
The creative idea in these illustrations attracts the attention of the public so it is easy to teach and sensitize them about the virus.

The role of media in health education
The media is the largest source of information that provides people with culture and educates them about the dangers they may face and the gains and rights that they should enjoy in times of crisis.
in crisis situation:
The world sometimes goes through health crises such as the spread of epidemics, viruses, diseases and radiations. So, there must be a plan to reduce the effects of these crises. In order to reduce these effects, the media enter health education to solve these problems.
Here the role of the health media is important, leaders, governments, organizations and institutions will need a way to communicate their voice to the people through warnings, decisions and directives that pertain to the crisis in the country.
in prevention:
The role of the media in health education was clear, especially when the Coruna virus spread around the world.
Most of the visual and audio media have had most of their coverage on prevention, and how people stay safe in order to reduce the spread of the virus.
In recent times hashtag #stayhome has spread and through this hashtag a lot of huge media campaigns have been created around the world, most of the famous TV programs have become their slogan are #stayhome.
Screenshot from Twitter
In order to keep people away from danger and for prevention, it was necessary to inform the public about the danger of this virus by media and this is what happened:
1- The media in health education was the most important tool of China in managing the Corona virus crisis, and even contributed to raising the morale of the Chinese people through the positive messages it has been broadcasting continuously despite the fierce media campaigns that China was exposed to.
2- Most people have a great knowledge of this virus, how dangerous it is, and how to prevent it from spreading.
Understanding:
The world cannot dispense with the media, whatever the crises situation was, and to solve problems and crises, the media should be the first step because the media is not only important in health education, it also in other sectors.

Hate speech
Free speech differs from hate speech, yet there is a simple connection between them, when the content of free speech is discrimination, extremism, race and incitement of all kinds it becomes merely hate speech.
Hate speech can be identified in the media through if the speech targets and attacks certain groups and when its contents indicate incitement, racism, aggression and violence. Sometimes it be racial, class and gender discrimination, such as:
-Hate speech against Muslims and every who has a long beard and coming from the Middle East is a terrorist.
-The hate speech that ISIS used to recruit many young men through their use of videos attacking other religions and posting them on Twitter and Instagram.
-Racism against Syrian immigrants, as happened in Germany, Jordan and Turkey, and their use of hate speech in the form of hashtags, such as:
#Syrians_Go_Home
-Negative discrimination against women in the Middle East.
-The Gulf crisis, Bahrain, the Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, with all their electronic armies, attack Qatar with hate speeches by creating hashtags, fabricating pictures, spreading rumors, and inciting people to be aggressive against Qatar and Qatar practice the same things with this countries.
In Oman, a different style of hate speech. Oman suffers from a scarcity of jobs, so many unemployed and non-unemployed people practice hate speech against the Indian people because Indians take over most of the jobs in Oman.
The hate speech style is like this:
- They use “MEMES” on Twitter targeting the Indians and those who bring them to Oman.
- Many hashtags on Twitter are calling for the deportation of Indians.
-They use Raju's name in their posts to ridicule, such as: “You don't want to hire me, you want to hire Raju”.
“From Twitter”
Hate speech against the Chinese after the spread of the Corona virus around the world in Twitter and Facebook through several hashtags bearing the name of the Chinese, such as: #chineseviruse #kungflu
“I captured it from Twitter”
Understanding:
A person is not born with a feeling of hate, but there are political, societal, religious, and economic factors and goals that have helped to practice hate speech.

Selfie and narcissim- fame online
In early 2012, when the selfie became widespread in the world and a lot of people taking selfies, an addiction to their physical appearance and the way they appear to others, this led to an increase in the number of narcissists.
It became easily to distinguish who is narcissistic or does not have this psychological disorder, because as I said, social media made it easier.
Sometimes when you come across a celebrity in real life, you will be shocked that he is different from what you saw on his Instagram page, because he uses many techniques that help highlight his beauty and hide his faults, and this is one of the symptoms of narcissism.
Narcissists see themselves as important that the world revolves around them, they see themselves as exceptional, and they always tend to attract attention and you can notice this on social media, for example:
- Some famous women trying to attract attention through brands and men by buying expensive cars.
-Narcissists see themselves that they are important and beautiful, so they are waiting for a response from the other side to confirm this, when they take selfies and post it to their personal account and waiting for a reaction such as, comments, likes and retweets.
- Narcissists always change their profile pictures and their account is full of selfies.
- Some narcissistic celebrities in their official accounts don’t follow anyone.
Despite this, the famous narcissists don’t reflect their true reality, they act because they are trying to show themselves that they are perfect. Many of celebrities commit suicide even though their social media accounts show them otherwise, as if they were very happy.
Understanding:
-The stereotype that celebrities try to create about themselves are narcissists, their virtual reality very different from their real reality only in order to confirm that they are exceptional.
-Many celebrities practice narcissism and they don't know it or don't feel that they are narcissist.

How do media outside Oman present race, gender (Male, Female & 3rds) and class?
The treatment of the media with race, gender (Male, Female & 3rds) and class differs, because some countries because of customs, traditions and religions have another view, some countries accept this, and other countries do not. The media deals with these things by creating a stereotype that is different from reality and that reflects the ideology of this countries.
How media present race and class?
The media presents stereotypes that can have an impact, such as presenting race and class in a way that does not reflect reality, for example:
-Oscar-winning (Parasite) create an ugly stereotype for the rich.
- The media in western countries show white men that they are the highest positions and they have the power in the state and in return black men have low positions and they are nothing.
- Hollywood movies like (Breakfast at Tiffany's, Get Out and etc.) have created many stereotypes of race and class, and we can imagine that Asians as nerdy, black men as dangerous and Latinas as fiery.
- The famous series Breaking Bad showed Mexicans as drug dealers.
How media present gender?
How the media present gender, it was very clear, and we can see the effect of this in our daily life for example:
-Media portrays us that women in many cases treated as inferior, weaker, sex objects and house worker.
-Some commercials, such as the soap advertisement, women are starring in these ads and this creates stereotypes that women are laundry workers.
The media presented males differently, many films and programs created a perception that males have no feelings, they are very bad, sexual, muscular, egotistical and tough. Also, men are the ones who have power and have absolute freedom in what they want to do with women and that was evident in War Films such as (Fury), when secondary characters raped the opponent's women after winning the war.
The media's handling of the 3rds was showing their suffering and the extent of the daily bullying that occurs to them and Most of them commit suicide, it presented them as outcasts of society.
In Oman
In Oman, the media shows that there is no racial discrimination, and this is not true, there is racial discrimination in marriage.
As for the 3rds, the media does not talk about it because of its sensitivity.
The media is now trying to present women as partners in building the renaissance with men.
Understanding:
Media does’t reflect the reality.

Topic: Communication used in Cold War, World War I, World War II, The American coalition invasion of Iraq
World War I
In this war, communication is used only by the soldiers when they want to communicate with each other and by communicating important messages and orders, so they use:
- phone - telegraph - dogs and birds
In World War II
Some countries on the one hand seek to raise the morale of their army, and on the other hand, they tend to frustrate the army on the other side and all that because of the development of communication technologies as Newspapers, TV, ADS, Movies, Radio.
Their impact has become high on the targeted groups through the spread of rumors, intimidation and propaganda, and radio has played a large role in that.
Example:
-Britain wanted to recruit more young people, so it used propaganda by producing films that helped raise the national spirit. They also published advertisement boards and posters stating that freedom is in danger.
-BBC Radio had a great role in liberating Paris from the Nazis because of the speech of French General Charles, which was broadcast it on the radio.
Cold war
communication was in a state of rapid development, as radio frequencies improved and became a weapon of war.
Russia and America realized the importance of broadcasting, so they expanded radio coverage to spread their propaganda to achieve their political goals.
Also, Russia used magazines and newspapers as well, while America was using movie showsto influence people's minds.
The American coalition invasion of Iraq
This stage was not like the previous stages because in this period the development of communications had a role in creating new techniques for influencing and shaping public opinion due to the emergence of new media
It is the first time that satellite TV and the Internet have entered the press, news agencies, radio and television.
During that period, there were many techniques used to influence public opinion, such as: producing films and propaganda animations that create stereotypes for the public.
Understanding:
- As communication develops, its effect becomes stronger.
- As communication develops, new techniques for propaganda and influencing public opinion emerge.
