If it wasn't in my shoe, or interrupting my private time, maybe it would be harmless. But I felt personally threatened! Frightened for my life, in fact. [chuckles] About the size of a small tea saucer, perhaps? That's what I'll be telling the headmasters, anyway.

As much as I appreciate the left-handed compliment, I would rather if you just wouldn’t. I don’t really enjoy wasting time all that much and we seem to be doing quite a bit of that now. I’ve got better things to do, if you don’t mind. [frowns] I wasn’t trying to brag or anything. I was just stating a fact. But fine. I’m sure you’ll look out for it.

I beg to differ! I'm simply wondering what you have to offer me. I'm analyzing, which is no waste of time. [chuckles] Well, don't you think stating - as a fact - that you're smarter than everyone else can come off as bragging? For example, I believe it is a fact that I'm far more attractive than about ninety-percent of this school's population. But is that also completely pompous? Yes. If I didn't see how completely superficial that "fact" was, I'd be bragging. Just something to think about - but you can be on your merry way. Go work on your Arithmancy.

What did the spider do to you to deserve the curse, though?

Well, I was in the toilet, and the little pest crawled its way into my slippers. I was afraid it'd bite my toes and send me to the infirmary, so when it crept out of my shoe ever so slowly, I cursed it. It could've killed me! But in all honesty, I did it for fun. I thought it would be funny to see all eight legs squirm and twist in different directions. And it was.

What? I intended on killing it to put it out of its misery, but then some brat tattled on me and left the poor spider to its own devices. What a shame. Things would be so much better if people just left me alone...

It’s not what I mean, but at least you tried. I’m sorry that you don’t get it, but it’s not unusual. Besides the fact that I’ve spent years around them, you mean? [smiles] I’m just smarter than you. It’s how it is. Don’t feel bad about it — I’m smarter than everyone.

While I really like your confidence, I can't help but wonder what sort of god-complex is lurking behind those eyes of yours. And if it's not a god-complex, I'd love to know what sort of insecurities lie in the shell under your mousy brown hair. [smirks] And you might be smarter than a few of us, but are you as daring? As charming? Persuasive? Truthfully, I don't think so. But maybe you will prove me wrong - with due time, that is.

I know that there’s magic and divination in numbers. It’s as easy as that. Maybe it’s got to do with how simple everyone around here is. I don’t like it just because no one else likes it. That’s a waste. I like it because I’m good at it. I’m guessing you’re not?

There's nature in numbers, if that's what you mean. Sorry, who are you to generalize "everyone" as simple? Please tell me. I'm dying to know. [raises an eyebrow] I don't even take Arithmancy. I don't like to waste my time on such frivolous things. You're awfully accusatory, aren't you? What are you trying to prove?

Of course I do. And of course it is not. It’s just easy to work through, once you get around to it. But see? That’s what everyone says. Not many fans of Arithmancy, from what I understand.
