February goals of a polyglottal wannabe (update)

So, a week in and already the best laid plans are in ruins...sort of. My Japanese studies are continuing, though at a glacial pace thanks to burnout. Picking up that slack, instead of Arabic, I’ve switched to the Balkans and am learning Macedonian and Serbian. Because why not? They’re Orthodoxy and I already know cyrillic, so I don’t have to put much thought into how to spell although there are some slight differences between the south slavic languages and Russian.

February goals of a polyglottal wannabe

I’m trying something this month that I’ve tried before half-heartedly and without much success. I’m self-studying two languages at once. Brushing up on Arabic (particularly the Syrian dialect) and continuing in my Japanese studies. In theory, this should work. I would peg myself at the Upper Intermediate level of Arabic (or even Advanced, if I could remember all of the Arabic I used to know), and possibly Upper Beginner or Lower Intermediate in Japanese.

For the Syrian Arabic, I’m going through an old text (with audio) I used to use when I lived in Syria as well as a website that contains text in the Syrian dialect. My goals here are a bit nebulous, though - basically just to brush up and get to where I was when I left Syria. Maybe I need to have something more concrete.

For Japanese, my goals are more specific. I’ll be going through 1000 vocabulary items (in kanji, since my primary goal is to be able to read Japanese) over the next 29 days. This would take me firmly into the Intermediate level, so I’m quite excited about that, though it would be nice if my speaking skills matched my comprehension. But I’ll work on that later.

My biggest concern, and probably the real reason I haven’t had much success in the past, is that over the next 29 days, I’ll get distracted by shiny objects like wanting to brush up on some of the other languages I know, or get distracted by some other language (see Coptic, Farsi, Greek, or Tibetan) that I’d like to learn at some point in the future. I’m hoping that having this tumbl will help to keep me accountable. I guess we’ll see.
