HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 1.01 | ‘The Heirs of the Dragon’
Viserys spoke often of the Valyrian histories. I know them well. When dragons flew to war…everything burned. I do not wish to rule over a kingdom of ash and bone.
But the burden is a heavy one. It’s too heavy.

EMMA D'ARCY as RHAENYRA TARGARYEN in HOUSE OF THE DRAGON (2022) Episode 8: “The Lord of the Tides”
In 111 AC, a great tourney was held at King’s Landing on the fifth anniversary of King Viserys’s marriage to Queen Alicent. At the opening feast, the queen wore a green gown, whilst Princess Rhaenyra dressed dramatically in Targaryen red and black. Note was taken, and thereafter it became the custom to refer to “greens” and “blacks” when talking of the queen’s party and the party of the princess, respectively. The blacks had greater success in the tourney as Criston, wearing Rhaenyra’s favor, unhorsed all of the queen’s champions, including two of her cousins and her youngest brother, Ser Gwayne Hightower.

ALICE BINGLEY’S WARDROBE, modern edition.
And then Alice is the representation of every woman: a whole set of annotations could be added tracing Alice imagery and Alice imitation in women’s fiction, from Cathleen Schine to Virginia Woolf. (Every man identifies with Hamlet, it has been said, since every man imagines himself a disinherited monarch; every woman identifies with Alice, since every woman sees herself as the sole sane person in a world filled with lunatics who imagine themselves disinherited monarchs.)
