Ongoing Series Review: This is What First Love is Like, Your Majesty

Note: At the time of this review, I have read up to Chapter 15.

This is What First Love is Like, Your Majesty is about Crown Prince Kalart Leichester Gretran, who has been cursed to never love anyone. That is until he lays eyes on an absolute unit of a cat Clobellina, a black cat who has snuck into a ball being held at the imperial palace. Like a bolt out of the blue, it is love at first sight for Kalart. Only Clobellina is not an ordinary cat, nor is her owner, Roserikta, a normal pharmacist. Determined to make Clobellina his, he brings her and Rokerikta to the palace, thus kicking off their magical cohabitation adventure.

This series is something alright. It's definitely one of those where you have to turn off your brain to fully enjoy. Not that it means that This is What First Love is Like, Your Majesty is a terrible read (it's fun in its own way), it’s just don’t expect anything too deep from a story about a prince falling in love with a cat.

Thankfully the kind of love Kalart has for Chonkers Clobell is more along the lines of "OMG kitty!" than "I would gladly abdicate the throne in order to marry this creature and no one can stop me." (I’m not sure if this would count as a spoiler, but from my observation it would appear that Clobell is truly just a cat and not a shape shifter like other stories.) Though it is certainly amusing that for a guy who has never had romantic feelings or experience, Kalart oddly has a lot of rizz.

It will be interesting to see how this series progresses as Kalart’s interest starts to (reasonably) shift away from Clobell to Roserikta (given the circumstances). This is What First Love is Like, Your Majesty might be worth checking out if you like romance, fantasy, magic, and chonky cats.

P.S. Seriously you need to either have magical powers or an eight pack to pick up this cat.

First Impression: My Contract with the Apothecary Monster

My Contract with the Apothecary Monster is about Nea Harleigh, a young woman who has been followed by misfortune since the loss of her family. She is given the opportunity to start over when she is mysteriously transported to Weem, the land "on the other side of the bridge" which overflows with the magic of fairytales.

Chosen as the nation’s “Songbearer”, Nea must summon and enter into a magical contract with a monster. The catch? She must give up a bit of her life force every time she wishes to use the monster’s powers. Having no choice, she forms a contract with a high-level monster with "unique" tastes named Dino (who looks like a stunningly handsome young man with long, flowing hair), who has no interest in her life force. With Dino by her side, will Nea be able to enjoy her second chance at life in a new world?

My Contract with the Apothecary Monster is a different take on the shoujo isekai genre and I’m here for it. The art is also super pretty, which doesn’t hurt (especially if you’re into beautiful long-haired boys). There is a lot of info dumping world building in the first volume, so be prepared for that. We are also introduced to an intriguing mystery plot line that will likely guide the characters’ journey in future volumes, so I’m looking forward to that.

Story aside, Nea and Dino have a really funny dynamic that works well and is fun to read. Nea has a very “no non-sense” personality and a pragmatic way of thinking. Dino on the other hand is like a giant puppy and has absolutely no filter. He also has maso- “interesting” desires, I’ll say that much. There is currently no romantic relationship between them, but I feel like the potential for one is heavily hinted at.

Anywho, if you enjoy shoujo, fantasy, isekai, and long-haired ikemen, then give My Contract with the Apothecary Monster a try!
