Alyse was standing, human form in the woods. Staring out over a small clearing. She’d just come for a walk. She’d been doubting so many things in her life lately. Town and work didn’t feel safe… the ocean didn’t feel safe. She wasn’t too far from home. Back home with her family. She could easily shift back and run if anything startled her. For now though she stood, staring out over the many many trees. The pattern almost hypnotizing.

Suddenly a crack and a crunch was heard. A few very specific memories flooded her mind. Memories she had mixed feelings on lately. She turned around very quietly and looked in the direction of the noise. Saying nothing right off the bat. “I heard you.” Her quiet voice still carried in the forest.

It had been a long day, and everyone Alistair had run into while he was out seemed to be in a bad mood. The wererabbit had only barely avoided getting into a fistfight with an extremely irritable market vendor, so Alistair was looking forward to a relaxing conversation with his family. Except no one was home. He didn’t know where his parents were, but when he noticed a few snapped twigs leading into the forest he could make a good guess of where Alyse was.   "It's just me." He called once his sister came into view. "I didn't scare you, did I?"

Best case scenario, this ended in both of their deaths. Worst case scenario Alistair and her husband killed each other.“The guards that did this” She motioned absently at her face,. “Gideon sent them to bring me to the castle where I may have kind of sort of agreed to work with him and uh-”  Was it stupid of her to think he’d be more angry about the last part? Fuck it. “And Reed and I got married.” 

“I’m sorry what?” He asked in disbelief, his mouth hanging open in shock as he tried to make sense of what his sister was telling him. “You willingly agreed to work for the man that kidnapped our father and nearly destroyed our entire family?” He shook his head  slowly. “What in Alice’s name were you-” Alistair stopped dead in his sentence, looking up to meet Cilla’s eye. Total horror in his expression. “You got married and-” He was practically speechless, not sure whether he should be more angry about the fact that Cilla had married that good for nothing mermaid or that she’d gotten married and he was only hearing about it just now. “Unbelievable.” He began muttering to himself.

The fact that her crying had startled a stranger and called him to her was unsettling. Even more unsettling was the fact that he cared enough to cautiously approach her to see if she was hurt. She wasn’t hurt but she was in emotional pain, “It’s ok, I am ok.” She sounded less convincing than she intended to. She had no idea if she could trust this man or not.

“Alright.” He said doubtfully. The girl certainly didn’t look okay and Alistair would feel horrible if he left her by herself, but at the same time he didn’t want to push her and scare her off. “Are you lost?” He asked, “do you need help?”

Lily had been through quite the emotional rollercoaster. Seeing Alice had made her think back all those years ago. Now she relived the past when she closed her eyes, a memory she had almost snuffed out. Now it was time to cry about it again. She thought she was alone but no one could ever be sure of that. It turns out that Lily was not alone at all.

Alistair had been taking the scenic route back home. He wasn’t exactly in a hurry, but his mother would start getting worried if he wasn’t back soon. However when he heard the sound of someone crying, he felt obliged to try and help. The wererabbit didn’t recognize the girl. She didn’t look very threatening, but he still approached her with caution. “I’m sorry if I scared you,” he began, his face filled with concern. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay. Are you okay?”

This was so out of character for Cilla that she worried it may kill her. That is if Alistair didn’t kill her first. How exactly does one tell their brother they married someone they hated and works for a person that ruined their lives? Should she just come out with it all at once, ask him to flip a coin, choose who he despised the most? This had to be her worst plan of the century. “So how do you want me to unload everything that has happened in the past few weeks? Because I’d prefer to do it without you strangling me and or you dying of a heart attack.” 

Alistair closed his eyes and began to massage his temple, a stress headache already setting in at whatever his sister was about to tell him. Cilla was almost never afraid of anything, so if she was actually being cautious about this she must have some massive news to deliver. “Just... Just tell me.” He said quietly.

So how'd ya like to be an uncle?

“I would love to be an uncle. All kids are adorable, and my sisters would make the best mothers. But that would mean…” Alistair trailed off as he thought about the circumstances that him becoming an uncle would entail. “Oh, Alice. Actually, I don’t know. Can I pass?”

“Al,” Cilla started with a sigh, “I just don’t see a reason to worry you with all the things I do, I just don’t want to put more stress on your shoulders.” She wondered if there would ever be a time where the rabbit family could be as uncomplicated as it was when they were kids. When they made crowns out of clover in the front yard, laughing at the Hatter or the Hare or the Cheshire Care, instead of hiding things from one another, squirreling away secrets. What was she doing?

Gideon had split their family so many times before and she was just letting him get away with it again. Here she was wishing for the trust they used to have while simultaneously destroying it. “I just don’t want you to worry about me,” She repeated, voice just a little shakier than before. Why was she lying to him when all she really wanted was to just let it all spill out, when all she really wanted was to lean on her siblings like she did before. 

“I know, I know.” Alistair nodded, almost dismissively. He’d heard the I just didn’t want you to worry excuse that many times it was almost painful. It seemed almost like the siblings were going in circles, one would insist that they try to protect the rest of the family and the other would tell them they shouldn’t hide things from them. “I get that you don’t me to worry, Cil. But guess what? I’m your brother and I’ve been worrying about you and Alyse since day one. I’m always going to worry about you because that’s what I do. I just want you to be honest with me. Let me help. Please.”

Cilla almost felt guilty as Alistair lowered his voice, softening his tone. It reminded her of when they were children. She’d do something stupid, fall of a tree she was climbing or skin her knee or something, and he’d use that tone like he was parenting her. “Nothing will get out of hand,” She insisted, though she didn’t even believe that himself. “I have everything under control.” That she did believe, fully. She wasn’t going to let this hurt anyone she cared about. 

Alistair let out a relieved breath, hearing the confidence in his sister’s voice. Things were never quite as straightforward as he wished they could be when it came to Cilla, but he felt certain that she was going to at least try and that was enough for him. For now at least. “I wish you hadn’t tried to hide this from me.” He mumbled, his tone turning a little sulky. “I’m your brother, Cil. You know I’ll do everything in my power to keep you safe. Even if you do think you can handle this all on your own.”

“Babe, come on,” he pleaded sarcastically before the drink was thrown in his face and he was left alone, alcohol dripping down his features. At some point he had to start to draw every face of every girl he slept with to make sure he didn’t forget. Or else he was bound to repeat what had just happened, approaching and flirting with a girl he had already slept with. Twice. And obviously forgotten. She clearly didn’t appreciate it. Onyx didn’t care though, wiping his face clean with a napkin like he had done many timed before. He preferred slaps over thrown drinks. Once clean, he forgot all about it and knocked a shot back, slamming the glass against the bar counter before looking over at the person next to him. “Women, huh. ”

Alistair watched the exchange between the two through tired eyes, a little shocked by how easily the guy brushed off the other’s anger. “Uh huh.” He shrugged and looked away, pretending to be suddenly engaged by the menu in front of him rather than let himself get drawn into a conversation with the other man.

Alyse was too excited to let the subtle shift in her brother’s expression bother her. She was happy- she loved Merce. She didn’t understand why anyone wouldn’t. She hoped he would be happy for her despite his thoughts on her relationship… “Well..” She bit her lip a bit harder than she would like to have done. “He - he asked me to marry him… I said yes…” She pulled back her sleeve slightly so he could see the ring that she now wore on her left finger.

“Oh!” It took a moment for Alistair to process, the Butcher had proposed to his baby sister and she’d said yes. Alyse, who at times he’d practically had to drag out of the house just to get her to socialize was going to get married. Alistair was more than a little apprehensive, but he wouldn’t allow himself to ruin this for her without good reason. “That’s fantastic, Alyse! Congratulations.” He wrapped an arm around her and gave her another tight hug. “I’m really happy for you.” He said, mostly in earnest.

He wasn’t wrong, but Pierce was still bitter about it. He wouldn’t have had to explain any of this to his old professors, they would have understood. Ernest was great with a lot of this, but he was more the engineering type and so Pierce was desperately trying to work all of this out on his own. He was starting to realize why it took so fucking long for science to develop in Alice’s world.

“Yeah, well, it’s going to be a long time before I’ll be close to presenting anything definite anyway…”

Alistair could see that he was annoyed by all this, but he was so lost himself that he had no clue what he could say to try and cheer him up. “Never mind.” Alistair said, awkwardly patting Pierce on the back. “You’ll get there eventually.”

Pierce looked up from the book he’d been studying hard in the library. He was trying to relate the magic of wonderland to the science of Alice’s world but his notes were a mess and the public was of little help. 

“It’s just, if a molecular bond was… In the right environment it could… Maybe it… Nevermind.“

Alistair was trying, he really was but the more he tried to explain the less Al even wanted to try. “I think maybe you should work on the explanation a bit before you present this to anyone, y’know, important.”

Erik knew that he should probably get back to the palace by now. It was beginning to grow dark and he was getting hungry. When he heard a response to his calling out, Erik grew nervous. He knew the dangerous of the Tugley Woods and cursed himself for being so foolish. But when the voice simply asked who he was, he responded “Erik Diggory, and who are you?”

He crossed his arms acros his chest, some of his confusion relieved when whatever-it-was gave him a full name. That wasn’t very like any creature from Tugley, at least not in his very minimal experience. “Alistair White.” The wererabbit replied, stepping out into the view of the other person. “What are you doing out here so late?”
