// I really like the idea of Genji feeding stray cats. Like going out of his way to do so. It’s soothing, and brought him comfort to do so. Maybe it was seeing a life that was in need, that’s scared about the world it was thrown into, and seeing a little bit of himself there.
It would have started when he was under the mentorship of Zenyatta, the man showing him and teaching him that life has a meaning. That life finds a way. That each and every creature on earth has purpose.
Maybe he would have taken the time to brood, to meditate on the outskirts with the man. Movement would have caught his eye, instinctual he’d grab for a weapon but a hand on his shoulder would stop him. He and Zen would watch as a tiny stray cat came into view and they would just observe. Genji wouldn’t be able to get the kitten out of his head and would come back to that spot bringing beef or pork cuts. He’d get irritated at first that the cat wouldn’t take it, that it’d hiss and wouldn’t trust him. Wouldn’t come near him or take it, instead it would puff up and hiss or run away. He was impatient, would complain to his master that it was useless to try. The cat hated him and didn’t want him. Maybe Zen points out something, about how Genji didn’t trust him at first either. That it took time to warm up to the unknown and to open yourself up to a new relationship. Genji was scary, and his impatience wasn’t helping. Maybe it was taken to heart and he genuinely started trying. Would meditate on his own with some food far enough away that the cat didn’t have to come too close. Day after day he would return to the spot, would do the same thing, would try to move the food closer to himself until one day the cat is meowing and coming to him before he even sets the plate down. Still weary, but open. Finally, after a few weeks, Genji gets to pet it for the first time. Gets to really hear it purr. Could see their relationship blossoming and trust forming, that they were there for each other in those trying times.
I’ve always found animals to be therapeutic, and I can definitely see Genji learning a bit of patience from befriending a tiny stray and taking the interaction to heart. While he may not stick around with each and every one as he’s usually on the move during the nomadic period of his life, I can see him spotting local colonies and buying food to put out for them. It’s a small good deed that makes him feel good, reminds him of his humanity, and takes his mind off of his problems.
Plus, just imagining this man who is lost in life, take comfort in a tiny little kitten warms my heart.
