Together Again
A Subsmoke fanfic requested to me by @alittleofsmoke Hope you enjoy! Kuai Liang used to regard himself as a man who harbored no feelings for anyone, no matter who it was. He had shed no tears when Bi Han died, nor did he when he was betrayed by Frost. His life had always been full of hardship and loss, yet somehow it never fazed him. Perhaps it was due to the harsh environment he lived in all his life, for the Lin Kuei clan had always taught its members to suppress their feelings and emotions. The cryomancer had recently suffered another loss. However this time, it was different… for he had lost someone he treasured more than anything. Smoke. The man he had spent his life with. The man who was always there for him. The man who was his only friend. The only person he could confide his feelings to without ever being shamed for it. He was the only person that genuinely cared for him. Tomas Vrbada was the only ray of sunlight in Kuai’s dark, ghastly life. And when Tomas was taken from him, whisked away to the Netherrealm, that small ray of light disappeared with him. It had been a few years since Tomas had been banished to the Netherrealm, and things really hadn’t gotten better for Kuai. Day and night the burden of stress weighed heavily upon his shoulders. His sanity had been slowly chipped away at as each day passed, and he wasn’t sure how much longer he could juggle his life. Trying to preserve the Lin Kuei clan, making amends with his rival Hanzo Hasashi, and coming to terms with the fact that his brother was dead was already too much for him to bear… and losing his best friend pushed him over the edge. Unfortunately despite all of the mental anguish the cryomancer suffered, he had no choice but to push all his problems to the back of his mind. He bottled up his emotions, hoping they would stay out of his way… ~~~~~~ It was a rather chilly night at the Lin Kuei temple… colder than usual. The night was a pitch black one, and there was no light to be found aside from the fulgent white stars that dotted the dreary black sky. The moon was nowhere to be seen. Outside of the temple stood Kuai Liang, feet planted firmly in the thick snow. He stood on the edge of a nearby river that had been iced over, dismally and absent mindedly staring out into the distance. His face remained expressionless, as his eyes lazily scanned the scenery around him. Although he could not see that well due to the darkness, the glimmering stars reflected off the ice and provided some illumination for the blue clad man. He continued to stare, watching the ice shimmer gracefully under the radiant stars. He was in a trance-like state, paying no mind to anything else aside from the ice. As he was about to zone out completely, an eerie, scraping noise caught his attention. His head shot up, only to see a hooded dark figure creeping along the ice not too far from him. Alarmed, Kuai shifted into his fighting stance and began to form a ball of jagged blue ice in his hands. “Who is there?!” He called out to the figure. “Do not come any closer!” The figure halted briefly, turning its head to face the bigger man. Kuai growled, as the figure then began to stalk closer towards him. Without hesitation, the cryomancer hurled the projectile at the shadowed being. Before the projectile could even land, the apparition suddenly vanished into an unmistakable cloud of smoke. Sub Zero froze at the sudden action, his heart nearly stopping. A moment later the creature emerged, this time in front of him. It lunged itself onto Kuai, which forced him to lose his footing and topple into the frigid snow. He gasped as the figure pounced on him, all of its weight resting on Kuai’s midsection. Before he could even grasp the situation, the thing was already pummeling him with its fists, each blow leaving a painful sensation on Kuai’s body. Sub Zero struggled desperately, managing to withstand the creature’s harsh attacks. After an intense scuffle, Kuai was able to wrestle the creature into submission, pinning its hands above its head and into the cold snow. He scowled in pain, his face now battered and bruised. His cold eyes met with the being’s dark ones, and only then was he able to recognize who had attacked him. Smoke. Kuai could only stare in disbelief and shock as he watched his best friend, who now appeared to be some kind of revenant, snap and lash at him ferociously. Though the cryomancer was able to keep him pinned, that didn’t stop the Enenra from relentlessly growling and snarling at him. His eyes were now lifeless glowing voids, and his skin was an ashy gray color. With each violent movement of the man beneath him, Kuai could feel his heart breaking. He had to be seeing things… “Smoke…” He started, his voice an inaudible whisper. “SMOKE IS DEAD!” The being spat viciously. “I AM ENENRA!” At those words Kuai’s stomach tightened into a knot. Tears began to well up in his eyes, for the seeing his friend in such a horrific state brought him great distress. As the gray clad man continued to struggle, Kuai suddenly hit him on the side of the head. The action stunned Smoke for a moment, but then he continued to growl and writhe. Reluctantly Kuai began to assault Tomas with a barrage of blows to the head, just enough to knock him unconscious. It pained the cryomancer to do such a thing, but it was the only way he could subdue the being beneath him. Once Smoke went limp, Kuai hesitantly dismounted him. He took a couple steps back, the snow beneath his feet emitting a soft crunching noise. As he gaped at the trembling body in the snow, Kuai could no longer hold back his tears. He dropped to his knees, cold droplets beginning to slide down his cheeks. Seeing his friend like this, a demon… he couldn’t bear it. The tears ran down his face, dripping into the cold snow beneath him. He began to weep silently, not being able to take the pain anymore. His friend had been gone for so long, and now he had returned… only for him to be nothing but a berserk demon. He watched solemnly as the Enenra’s body twitched in the snow, blood trickling from his mouth and seeping into his shirt. After sitting on his knees in dismay and grief for what seemed like an eternity, Kuai was finally able to gather the strength to pull himself to his feet. He brushed away his tears with the pad of his thumb, grimacing as he did so before meekly making his way over to the white haired man. He planted himself in the snow beside him, gravely pulling the smaller man into his arms. Carefully he stood up, adjusting his position in order to maintain a firm grip on his body. With this, Kuai began to trudge back to the temple as several thoughts raced through his mind- all of them focused on how he could restore Tomas back to his former self. His human self. Once the cryomancer had reached the temple, he continued to contemplate some more. He stood at the entrance of the temple, Smoke in his arms as he began to ponder. There was only one person Kuai could rely on to restore his friend, and that person was Raiden. ~~~~~~ “You say you found him near the Lin Kuei temple?” The thunder God inquired, watching as the distraught cryomancer sat on the ground adjacent to him. Upon receiving the question, Kuai buried his face into his icy hands and groaned angrily. “That is precisely what I said!” He barked. “Stop asking me such absurd questions! I just want my friend back!” “Sub Zero.” Raiden spoke firmly. “Do not take that tone with me. Just-” Not wanting to hear the God’s mindless gabble, Kuai Liang stood up and abruptly snatched Raiden by the hem of his robe. He kept a taut grip on him, and lowered his voice into a growl. However, it was evident that he was also on the verge of tears. “I just want my friend back…” He began. “Please. He is all I have left. I cannot lose him. I just want to be with him again…” His grip on Raiden loosened slightly, and the hat bearing man seized the opportunity to pull himself away from Kuai. He sighed warily, fixing his garments. Silence befell upon the room briefly, before Raiden broke it. “I cannot help you directly…” He said slowly. “However, you can bring him back yourself.” Perplexed by Raiden’s words, Kuai answered bitterly. “And just how can I do that?” “Despite what Enenra has said, your friend is still intact and here. If he recognizes you, it may vanquish the demon within him.” Kuai said nothing, as he took in the thunder God’s words. Another silence ensued upon the two men, before Raiden spoke once more. “That is all I can do, Sub Zero. I apologize, but now I must return to other matters.” A sudden burst of lightning struck the God and just like that, he was gone. An exasperated sigh escaped Kuai’s mouth, as he rubbed his temples with the tips of his fingers. It had been so long… would Smoke even recognize him? What if the demon had already taken him over completely? What if he had lost Smoke for good… As dark thoughts began to cloud his mind, Kuai screamed furiously. He stood up, and thrust a sharp kick into the wall. No! He could not think this way! Smoke was not gone! Tomas had always been there for him when he needed it, now it was his turn to be there for him. He was going to get his friend back, even if he had to do it the hard way. With newfound determination and adrenaline now coursing through his veins, Kuai exited the room and made his way to a different room… where he had tied Smoke up. It was for his own safety, to ensure that Tomas would not be able to attack him had he regained consciousness. He was glad he had thought of doing this, for when he entered the room he was met with sounds of vicious growling. In the corner was his friend, on his knees, now awake and fully responsive. Around his neck was a thick gray chain, which restrained him and heavily limited his mobility. Kuai watched gravely as the white haired man strained against the bondage, hissing loudly in annoyance each time he failed to break free. Despite his best efforts, they were all rendered futile. The cryomancer observed the spectacle for a bit longer, before drawing in a sharp breath. At this the Enenra glanced up, scowling as he took sight of the azure clad man. “Smoke…” Kuai spoke softly, his tone heavy with emotion. “SMOKE IS DEAD!” The other man shrieked. “I AM ENENRA!” Another attempt to liberate himself was made, which once again ended in failure. Kuai’s eyes were beginning to become wet with tears once more, as he advanced towards his bound friend. He walked until he stood just a mere few feet away from him, then lowered himself onto his knees so that he was at his friend’s level. At this, Smoke did not hesitate to lash out at the man before him. He snapped at him repeatedly, but Sub Zero did not even flinch. He held his ground, even when Smoke began to shout obscenities at him. “I WILL KILL YOU!” He shouted in a venomous tone. “I WILL TEAR YOU TO PIECES!” “Smoke please…” Kuai began soothingly. “It is me, Sub Zero. Your friend.” “YOU ARE NOT MY FRIEND, SUB ZERO! YOU WILL DIE! I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!” Each word that man spat out was like a stab to the heart, but Kuai knew it was not his friend speaking. It was that demon. That damned, execrate demon. “I am your friend.” Kuai answered calmly, although his voice had now begun to quiver. “I am your friend, and always will be. Please, Tomas…” The gray clad man paid no mind to the stranger in front of him, and began to scream with intense fury. He picked up his struggle once more, thrashing about wildly. Kuai glowered at his friend’s deafening roars, already growing impatient with him. He clenched his jaw, now suddenly hellbent on trying to get the howling man to shut up… but how? With each second of unbearable screaming that passed, the cryomancer became more angered. Usually Kuai was a patient and stoical man, but already now he was seething with vexation. Desperate to silence Tomas, Kuai made a quick and impulsive decision. He rammed himself into his friend, and seized him roughly by the hair. The Enenra wheezed with pain, but was hastily cut off when a set of rugged, cold lips pressed against his violently. As he forced a kiss upon the smaller man, Kuai squeezed his eyes shut. The choice to kiss him was a rash and impetuous one, but he didn’t care. It was as if he had lost all logic and reasoning. He continued to kiss Tomas, stifling his screams. In return Smoke gagged, and grabbed the cryomancer by the face to try and pry him off… but to no avail. Sub Zero kissed him needily, as he finally cracked. It was a vehement kiss, and all of the emotions he had been bottling up were now being emptied into it. A full minute into the kiss, Kuai could feel a decline in the Enenra’s struggle. He continued to kiss him feverishly, managing to slip his tongue into his friend’s mouth in order to silence him some more. Another minute later, and Smoke’s muffled screams had been reduced to meek whimpers and whines. He had given up his struggle completely, and was now starting to calm down. His eyes widened, and little by little his skin began to shift color. From a dark gray to a pale silver, to a paper white and finally to a soft tan. His eyes did the same, now transforming back to their former alluring silver color. At last Kuai pulled his lips away from Tomas’s, panting due to the lack of air. His eyes lazily fluttered open, only to widen once he took sight of his friend. His friend. His fully restored, human friend. “Tomas…?” Kuai asked faintly. Tomas’s eyebrows furrowed, as he tried to catch his breath. His eyes were twitching, and his breath was hitching. He did his best to regain his senses, still unsure of where he was and who was in front of him… but then it hit him. “K-Kuai?” He stammered. At this, Sub Zero pounced onto his friend and enveloped him in a bone crushing hug. He secreted his face into the crook of Smoke’s neck, and began to sob uncontrollably. The white haired man stiffened in response to the display of affection, but eventually eased into the hug and returned Kuai’s embrace. He rested his chin atop his head, clenching his eyes shut to prevent any tears from spilling. This could not have been real, he had been separated from his friend for so long… Tomas whimpered as Kuai’s hands made their way to his neck to undo the chain. It fell to the floor with a loud clink, the shrill sound resonating throughout Smoke’s body. About five minutes later, Kuai reluctantly and gently broke the hug. He held Tomas’s forearms in his hands, staring deeply into his eyes. Smoke did the same, using the time to take in all of Kuai’s features… oh how he had changed! He noticed the stubble on Kuai’s face which definitely had not been there the last time he saw him. He appeared to be much more muscular now as well, and he had a more rugged and masculine look to him. For Smoke however, it was the exact opposite. His hair had grown much longer, and locks of his creamy white hair hung gracefully down the sides of his face and stopped just at his middle back. His build hadn’t changed much, yet somehow Kuai felt that he looked more feminine than before. He wasn’t sure why, but Kuai could feel his cheeks turn pink as he stared at Tomas. A blush had crept its way onto his face, and the memory of kissing his friend returned to mind. At this he tightened his grip on Smoke, hoping that the blush would fade before the white haired man noticed. Unfortunately, that was not the case. “Kuai…” Smoke started hesitantly. “Are you…-” Sub Zero hushed him before he could continue, and pressed himself up against his friend. He placed both hands on the sides of his face, and nuzzled his nose against his. “Be quiet.” He said. And with that, Kuai planted another kiss upon Tomas’s lips. Smoke’s eyes widened at the gesture, and he lifted his arms up in order to push the offending man away. However, something in him told him not to. His body was enjoying it. It was as if he wanted this. Slowly Tomas returned the kiss, lifting his arms to caress Kuai’s shoulders. He closed his eyes, and conceded to his friend. After being away from him for so many years, he wanted nothing more than to be close to him again. Once the kiss was broken, Kuai touched Tomas’s forehead with his. “I missed you.” He spoke quietly. Tomas smiled wistfully at his words, and pulled him closer. The action caused Kuai’s blush to spread, as Smoke whispered to him. “I missed you too.” The two just sat there, encasing each other into a loving embrace. They didn’t care about anything else right now. They were together again, and that was all that mattered. Thanks for reading! I had a lot of fun writing this!
