🖤🖤🖤I remember the shame. Being told not to wear bright colors. The embarrassment I felt when someone saw my dark gums in my smile. I remember the comments about lightening creams just so that I would have a little more “glow”. Growing up with dark skin I just wanted so much to be included in the conversation of beauty. I wanted to walk down the aisle and see someone like me on a lotion bottle, a perm box, on tv as a love interest. No mater which way I looked the message was clear. I was the side kick. The underdog. The dark girl with the funny personality. But what I wanted was to feel valuable and desirable. Conversations about dark skin and colorism are happening more and more. Some people push against it as something harmful while others still deny it as a problem all together. I don’t care what anyone has to say about it, I live it. The devaluing of people of color by degrees of their blackness is a real thing. And as a dark skinned woman it’s a life long struggle that has turned into a deep passion for spreading self love and self worth. Cool black, warm black, rich browns, and deep onyx, it’s all beautiful. Dark girls, take care of yourselves. Love your color even when it seems like nobody else does. Wear your bright colors, soak up more sun, smile wide with your dark gums. We are beautiful, desirable, sexy, fly, confident, funny, charismatic, smart, valuable and worthy. 🖤🖤🖤
