  ‘ lost your teddy bear ? well, we can’t have that ! ‘ ned had only begun to show   interest in uzzah more recently, and the angel was having fun with pretending   to be innocent to the whole charade. it was part of the chase that he liked.   ‘ maybe… when i’m over we can look for him ? ‘ but he gives a small wink.

     He felt a bit silly using the line, thinking it dumb, but he also knew Uzzah would appreciate the flirtation, meager as it was, if only because Ned initiated. It didn’t happen often, still building his courage in the steadily growing affection between the two. When Uzzah played along, Ned was all smiles and soft chuckles, anxiety washing off him easily. These past few months learning each other better were moments Ned cherished, especially lighthearted ones like now.

     Feeling inspired, Ned shrugged his hands as he affected an unsure expression. “I don’t know, I’ve looked everywhere. He’s lost,” Ned mock-sighed, seemly resigned with a mild shake of his head, but then his smile returned, less nervous. “Maybe you could be my new teddy bear.”

     Ned wasn’t sure how to tell Uzzah he couldn’t eat it. He didn’t want to be rude, but if Ned put that dish in his mouth pieces of a dead animal would crawl and hop over his tongue—an unpleasant experience just thinking about it.

      Squirming, his lips twisted in a frown, nervous energy spilling into shifting his weight until he made himself stand still. “It looks really appetizing, it does, but...” Ned peered up at Uzzah, upset clear in his gaze. “I can’t eat meat. I’m allergic—severely allergic. It’s awful and not pretty, so um, thanks? But I really can’t, I’m sorry.” Despite it not being his fault, Ned blamed himself anyway, feeling horrible for rejecting a kind gesture.

            “Who’s not for chocolate? Everyone at least tolerates it.” There was a reason people gorged themselves on the stuff when they were upset [even when they weren’t]. It worked natural wonders to elevate people’s spirits.

     Ned presented a bottle of chocolate syrup, tilting it slightly to tempt her. “Would you like some more poured on your dessert?”
