Do you have any idea why they call Sobek the bull of bulls when he is a crocodile?

I’ve actually got no idea. I could take some uneducated guesses (masculinity, fertility, etc), but I might just tag @starsandepithets and @lovedeluge. They probably know!

Quick bit of background - So ‘Bull’ is a really important epithet in AE, that is connected to masculinity, leadership and power. And in iconography and statuary, you will often see the pharaoh or a god (male only) with the tail of a bull which means the same thing.

It is used a lot to describe the Pharaoh and all sorts of different gods.

The most simple reason for its popularity is that it is connected with masculinity and power, based on having a herd of cows and only needing a single bull. This was also connected with ideas of leadership - so a perfect title for the Pharaoh.

But it also an ancient pun. Bull in AE is k3 (Ka), which sounds the same a Ka meaning soul. So it is a useful epithet of syncretisms and for those deities whose ‘power/role/position’ relied on another. For a really good example of this check out the title ‘Bull of his Mother’. It is used for Horus and the Pharaoh, and references that his power (powerful soul/legitimacy) comes from Aset - and indirectly from Ra (myth of the secret name of Ra). So ‘Bull’ in this context is used to connect a person/deity to Ra.

So for Sobek, Bull of Bulls, pretty much is all of these reasons in one big pot.

As a crocodile god, he is strong and powerful. He is leader and masculine. He is also notably syncretised with Ra.

I can try and tackle it as well, though I would agree that @sobekemiti​ is going to be your best bet. 

Like Stars mentioned, Bulls are tied to masculinity and leadership and power - and I would personally say that His Bull of Bulls title is intimately linked with His embodiment of active masculine creative potency and vitality. A bull is potent enough for a whole harem of cows, but Sobek is not just a bull, Sobek is the “Bull of Bulls, The Great Male” (k3 k3w T3y wr), the “Phallus of the Gods” (T3y nTrw). He is the quintessential male creative essence.

“We see Sobek invoked as the Bull of Bulls and similar titles especially funerary contexts, “ where the male creative essence (embodied by semen and erect phalluses in-action) are absolutely vital to the successful heka-transfiguration of the deceased in the Duat.”

So yea, to me the Bull of Bulls title is par for the course with Sobek embodying the sort of imminently masculine, active (at times violent?), vigorous potence that was responsible for both non-sexual and sexual creativity and vitalization at all levels (cosmic, vegetal, funerary).

Primeiros escritos

Hoje tivemos uma conversa muito legal e inspiradora no grupo do WhatsApp da comunidade Kemética brasileira, em que trocamos relatos de como ouvimos falar da Ortodoxia Kemética e da House of Netjer pela primeira vez. A grande maioria de nós teve um primeiro contato com a religião através de blogs de membros antigos brasileiros, como o da Tanakhtsenu e do HeryHeru.

Eu já havia criado esse tumblr há algum tempo e pretendia compartilhar apenas fotos nele, mas a conversa de hoje deixou claro o quanto é importante produzirmos conteúdo em português que alimente a comunidade kemética de língua portuguesa. Então aqui estou. Espero que minha recente caminhada como membro da O.K. possa ser útil a quem se interessa por essa religião, pelo politeísmo egípcio ou por aqueles que se sentem atraídos por Netjer em qualquer das suas formas.
