Early Coptic Fashion

(5-9th century)

My favorite part of early Coptic fashion is how people would decorate their tunics with strips (clavi) and squares/circles (segmentae) featuring a variety of designs, such as animals and biblical scenes

Simsimiya is both an instrument and a musical tradition associated with the northern port cities of Egypt. The instrument was introduced to the region during the mid-19th century by Upper Egyptian, Sudanese, and Nubian migrant workers who participated in the construction of the Suez Canal. During the 1956 Tripartite Aggression and the 1967 war with Israel, simsimiya music became an anti-colonial symbol of resistance; as artists composed patriotic songs to raise morale

Early Mamluk-era Egyptian women

Many of the depictions of mamluk-era women are non-Egyptian and upper class, so I wanted to depict what the average cairene woman would have worn in the bahri era.

Important to note that fashion was/is never stable, there were so many changes and variations under the mamluks alone that it became hard for me to keep track lol. I tried to use historical records and artistic depictions to the best of my ability

Women also played an important role during the tripartite aggression against Egypt (1956), wherein they simultaneously resisted French, British, and “israeli” soldiers. This was especially the case in the coastal city/region of portsaid.

Historical Egyptian fashion (part 1 of ??)

This drawing is inspired by early modern upper- and middle-class Egyptian clothing, particularly from the period following the French invasion of Egypt.

I’m interested in how Egyptian fashion traditions evolved and gradually became standardized; how they were shaped by surrounding cultures and ultimately became part of Egypt’s distinct national identity. The style depicted here closely resembles those found in other cultures of the same period, showing Egypt’s role in a broader global context.
