No amount of rain can stop more than 20,000 fans from partying!
MTV Asia brought the party down to Manila at the MOA Concert Grounds last Friday, June 24. A stellar line-up of both local and foreign acts graced the stage as they performed their hits. OneRepublic headlined the event along with Bebe Rexha and the LA-based EDM group Far East Movement. The emerging Korean girl group Apink brought some K-Pop vibes to the festival. Energizing the crowd was Mr. Pure Energy himself, Gary V who was joined by his son Gab Valenciano. Topping the stellar line-up was one of the country’s hottest loveteam today, JaDine, James Reid and Nadine Lustre. MTV Asia and MTV Pinoy’s VJs Hanli, Alan, Yassi, and Andre hosted the event.

A diverse mix of fans from different bases merged at the concert grounds to celebrate music and have loads of fun. From the electrifying performances of Gary V and Gab Valenciano, kilig-vibes warmed the venue despite the strong rain as JaDine sang their hit songs on stage.
The singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha then fired up the stage. The crowd sang and danced along to “Take Me Home”. The intensity of her set continued with hits such as “Hey Mama” and “Me, Myself, and I”. It all then ended with her explosive performance of “No Broken Hearts.”
K-Pop fans were then treated to Apink’s set. Far East Movement hyped things up with their tracks. The trio sent the audience into a rave with tracks like “Like a G6” and “Push.” Huge inflatables surfed through the crowd while Far East Movement wraps up their set.

Closing the night was the most-awaited act from the Grammy-nominated group OneRepublic. The crowd welcomed them with loud cheers and fists in the air as they performed “Love Runs Out”. Ryan Tedder mentioned that it is their second time to perform in the Philippines and took the chance during a break to tell his Filipino fans, “You are the most genuine people on earth.”
They then performed some of their iconic songs which immensely heightened up the emotions in the crowd. A heartfelt rendition of “Apologize” was performed by Ryan Tedder on piano and was accompanied by Brent Kutzle on cello. MTV Music Evolution 2016 was capped off with fireworks and confetti as the band performed “If I Lose Myself”, causing everyone to lose themselves.

Were you at the event as well? Are you also still reeling out of hangover? Let’s talk about it!
I would like to give a shoutout to ClickTheCity for giving me the passes to this event. We only caught Far East Movement and OneRepublic’s performances because of the rain but it was worth it and so much fun.

RANKED: 6 Game of Thrones Penultimate Episodes
What do you think is the best #GameOfThrones ninth episode? #BastardBowl or #RedWedding?
As any Game of Thrones fan would know, the ninth episode of every season can be huge and create a lot of buzz. Over the years, we have seen deaths, massive sequences, and setups for the next season in each penultimate episode. Last night, with the Battle of the Bastards, the show delivered an almost cinematic experience for TV. But how does that episode fare with the other ninth episodes of the…

After my first night in Baguio, I woke up early the following day to continue exploring the City of Pines.
There are jeepneys headed to Mines View Park at the plaza. I timed my arrival before dawn to capture great photos of the place. I may have arrived way too early as some shops are still closed but at least there are still few visitors. I passed through several shops before I got to the lagoon. Mines View Park may be Baguio’s most famous tourist attraction. Visitors can stand on the cliff while overlooking the community below and marvel at the vast mountainscape of the region. It’s nowhere near the Kiltepan experience but the view can still take one’s breath away.
Strawberry Taho + Sunrise? Yes, please!
Tourists started to crowd my spot so I decided to head out and check out what the shops outside have to offer. They carry different pasalubongs such as shirts, keychains, trinkets, and of course, the barrel man. There are also jams and snacks but I thought it would be best to buy them at the public market for more choices and better offers. A few blocks from Mines View Park is Good Shepherd Convent. They are best known for my ever favorite Ube Jam. Aside from ube jam, they also have jams of other fruit varieties such as santol and kundol. And oh, you better try their Braided Ube Loaf. It is divine. I had my breakfast at the convent’s cafe where they offer brewed Ifugao coffee and ube bread. I live for coffee and Ifugao coffee is one of a kind as it is sweet on its own.
Dried squid, anyone?
Kiltepan? No but close.
I took a quick break back at the Inn and dropped off the pasalubongs that I bought. Before lunch, I went back to the plaza and took a jeepney signed Long-Long Tacay to go to Tam-Awan Village. It is one of the two museums in Baguio that I planned on visiting, the other is BenCab Museum. Visitors get the chance to see model houses of Igorot in Tam-Awan Village or the Garden in the Sky . The entrance fee to the park is P50. It was a pretty easy but long trek so I suggest wearing comfortable attire and shoes.

It was a little past 3PM when I decided to explore Camp John Hay. My memories of visiting the place were vague, given that I was still a kid then. The jeepney dropped me off at the gates and I did not know that it was going to be a long walk! I would’ve used Grab had I not told myself not to take a cab on this trip. A little cardio would be great, I thought. The cool air of Baguio and the tall pine trees made the walk fun. Besides, I was there to look for Choco-Late de Batirol. The restaurant hides at the heart of Camp John Hay in Igorot Park, under towering trees. The cafe served traditional rich hot chocolate. Do you remember your Tsokolate E and Tsokolate A from Noli Me Tangere? That is how it felt like. I had Suman sa Lihia to complement my cup of hot choco.
Suman de Lihia and Chocolate de Batirol
The Laperal White House is another haunted spot in Baguio City that I planned on visiting, but, I enjoyed my time in Choco-Late de Batirol. Since it was still too early to call it a night, I explored Session Road and checked Ukay-Ukay shops. It took me some time to find my size, but it was worth it because I found branded goods for a quarter of their store price. There are shoes, shirts, and bags to choose from!

The view at the cafe.
Before I went back to my unit, I visited the public market to buy more pasalubongs. There is a whole lane at the market dedicated to these goods and it is just a matter of which shop gives the best offer. For the sake of fair competition, every store has the same price point. I got jars of strawberry jam, lengua de gato, and peanut brittle. There are some given at 4 for 100 or 5 for 100. Definitely a steal!
I am now on my final night in Baguio but the backpacking experience is still far from over. Find out on my next post how my last day in the City of Pines went and where to get (or should I say pick?) fresh produce.

Buckle up! The Conjuring 2 is a phenomenal horror movie from Director James Wan (Saw, Insidious). The movie packs great scares, haunting environment, a few laughs, and a heart. Yes, it is one aspect that is rarely seen in horror movies these days, making it hard for the audiences to care about the main characters. Let loose of your inner geeky child!
Yesterday, I attended the second day of ToyCon 2016 at the SMX Convention Center in Mall of Asia. Action figures, cosplays, and life-size displays are exhibited at the event. Marvel or DC? Why not have both? Walking Dead fan? It’s right there! Are you looking for Game of Thrones? Well, I did not see GOT materials on display but wait, HOLD THE DOOR! Hodor will be at the convention in the flesh! That’s right, fans will get the chance to meet Kristian Nairn today for his Rave of Thrones segment.
If you love superheroes, comics, and everything in between, rush to the event to geek out and experience pop culture overload. Aside from the displays, there is also a stage where different celebrities and performers will come to delight the audience. Mario Maurer yesterday treated his fans when he was interviewed on stage. He also did a rap in Thai as fan girls (and boys?) lost their minds.

One of the highlights of this year’s exhibit is the giant Voltes V figure. I believe that’s how tall it would be in real life if it steps out of the manga or anime. It looks too real that even Boazanians would feel threatened! Personally, I enjoyed Marvel’s section the most. Sorry DC. Visitors will be welcomed by a towering Stan Lee Funko figure. Displayed inside are signed items from different Marvel movies. Among those are posters, movie props, comic books, and even director’s chairs! I swear that at this moment I told my poor geeky heart to be still. Another part that stood out was The Walking Dead’s. Bloody walkers are on display and there is also a section where people can get their make-up done to look as if they were bitten by walkers. On the other section of the hall are shops selling goodies such as toys and whatnots for different fandoms.

As a first-timer to this type of event, it is an understatement to say that I was overwhelmed. I am a bit ashamed that I am a self-confessed pop culture geek yet I have never attended such activity before, but I know that this will be the first of many more to come. So, no matter what fandom you belong, go get yourself a ticket to ToyCon 2016 now! You’ll sure have a lot of fun!

Spending nine hours every single day in the office can be exhausting. There will come a time when you will want to drop everything, go out somewhere else, and escape from all of your responsibilities. You will be filled with the urge to step out and just wander off. That happened to me in January. I received my 13th-month pay and my leaves were still barely untouched, so I decided to do something about it. The bug that may have bitten every working millennials finally bit me: I got the travel bug. So after a few days of contemplating on the logistics of my travel, I planned my first solo backpacking trip to Baguio.
After my less than 4(!!!) hour trip from Manila to Baguio
I may or may not be excited to explore Baguio for arriving way too early.
Going on solo escapades is not new to me, but to go beyond Metro Manila is a different thing. Prior to Baguio, I was considering La Union, Baler, and Vigan. The impending summer heat helped me make up my mind. If this is starting to inspire you to do the same, then read along as I will be giving details about my transportation, accommodation, expenses, and itinerary.
It was Thursday afternoon, a few hours before the end of my shift, I was still undecided if I should push through with the trip. To be sure, I checked Victory Liner’s bus trips to Baguio. Their online ticketing system was down then, so I expected that I was going to be a chance passenger. I also checked hotels and inns that will be accommodating me for three days and two nights of my stay in the City of Pines. The Baguio Village Inn suited my needs and my budget. It is a perfect place for backpackers like me. The place is comfortable and cozy despite their cheap rates. It did not take me long to call them up to reserve a bed. Take note that the room will be shared among other occupants, lucky me, there were not many tourists then so I owned the room during the entire duration of my stay.

The following day, after a pretty stressful day at work, I decided to do my first solo backpacking adventure. I arrived at Victory Liner’s station in Cubao a little past 9 PM and it is packed with passengers and chance passengers. I was told that the next trip would be at 4 AM, and I cannot waste time due to my planned itinerary and room reservation. This is not ideal, but there are also passenger vans that are headed to Baguio waiting for passengers just outside the terminal. The fare (P 700) is double of the regular bus ticket but time is of essence here, so I took it. It paid off since we left Manila at around 12 and we were in Baguio (do not be surprised) a little past 3 AM. Byaheng-langit as they say!
DAY 1. Since it was still too early for me to roam around the city, I took a cab from the bus terminal in Baguio to the inn. The staff at the inn were nice enough to take me in despite arriving way too early for their usual check-in time. After a quick nap, I walked for about 15 mins from the inn to Burnham Park, as any tourists would do. Pictures here, picture there. I have never felt like such a tourist in my life. It has been years since I’ve been to this place and pure nostalgia took over me. Yes, travelling can spark people’s emotions up. After asking some of the locals for a good spot for breakfast, I had mine at Ganzo.

Once I explored every corner of the park, I visited the infamous Diplomat Hotel. My primary goal in the trip is to do as the Romans do, so taking a cab was a no-no, unless I really had to. The good thing is everything is accessible through jeepneys. The Diplomat Hotel is known for its creepy vibe and history and boy, does it deserve its reputation! The building is torn down, but there is beauty in its rubbles which I oddly loved.

The next destination in my itinerary is the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, a 200-step climb to the grotto. I remember conquering it when I was a kid, but it proved to be a challenge when I attempted it this time. The effort was all worth it because the view was breath-taking and the church on top of the hill gave me that much-needed retreat. It was almost afternoon when I descended and went back to the city. A few clicks later from my TripAdvisor, I found a spot for my lunch, Good Taste, not to mention the queue outside which intrigued me. They serve the usual Chinese dishes but the serving and the taste was very much worth the patience of getting seated. No wonder people flock to this place! Feeling full and exhausted from the trip, I decided to take a quick rest before I continue exploring Baguio at night.
It’s the climb.

Come evening, I headed back to the heart of the city and checked out SM Baguio. It is like any other SM Malls except for the Cordillera-product shops. It was not long before I got bored, I then attended the mass at the Baguio Cathedral. I overheard a group of friends talking about a cute coffee shop down the street so I searched for it. The Under The Tree Book Cafe was not easy to find, but the best landmark is a Korean-inspired food stall below it, near SM Baguio. Their mocha is not extraordinary but I was after the ambience, which I enjoyed. It was getting late, but the Night Maharrisrket is just starting to get fired up. Dedicated ukay-ukay fans will enjoy this as the whole stretch of Harrison Rd is turned into a giant bazaar full of clothes, bags, and whatnots. And oh, this was also a haven for foodies like me because a large variety of street foods, from Filipino lugaw to chapchae, were offered. A few munches later, I decided to call it a day.

Take a look at the breakdown of my itinerary and budget for my first day in Baguio:
Van (Cubao to Baguio) P 700 Baguio Village Inn P 375 / night Taxi (Victory Bus Terminal) P 60 (approx.) Breakfast at Ganzo P 150 (approx.) Lunch at Good Taste P 130 (approx.) Jeepney rides P 42 (P 7 fare) Coffee at the Under The Tree Book Cafe P 150 Street Food at the Night Market P 70 (approx.) Inspired yet to go on a solo backpacking adventure in Baguio? Look out for the conclusion of this trip with my Day 2 and 3 in the City of Pines!
Go for that quick summer escapade in Baguio! #baguio #travelph #backpacker #budgettravels Spending nine hours every single day in the office can be exhausting. There will come a time when you will want to drop everything, go out somewhere else, and escape from all of your responsibilities.
Last May 18, the International Museum Day was celebrated all over the world and as part of the celebration, several museums in the Philippines opened their doors to visitors for free. I enjoy visiting museums to roam around its halls, marvel at the artworks on display, and immerse myself in arts and culture. Having been to several museums in the past such as the National Museum, Metropolitan Museum, and the Pinto Museum, I know that I still have a few to cross out of my list. And I took out one recently when Ayala Museum had free admissions to its visitors.
We were told not to judge a book by its cover but isn’t it interesting to know what went on with the process of coming up with that cover? That is presented in the exhibit of Karl Castro, Book Designer, Secret Lives of Books. His book cover projects for Filipino writers such as Floy Quintos and Ricky Lee are displayed on the exhibit. Here he shares the design process and how important book covers are in delivering the essence of the printed material. This will be on display at the second floor of the museum until today.

The museum is known for its diorama of significant events in Philippine history. Its engaging and interesting presentation brings the visitor through a literal walk through the past. As this is my first time in the exhibit, the child in me enjoyed the display.

Every time I visit a museum, I get a sense of national pride by discovering the richness of the country’s culture and history. There is one part of my tour in Ayala Museum that caught my attention. The audio-visual presentation of the events during the Martial Law was compelling to watch. Personally, I did not think much about it possibly due to lack of interest, but after viewing the documentary, I had a sense of awareness at the matter.
With a lot of things to think about these days thanks to adulthood, we can easily get caught up with the present and forget to pause, step back, and look at the past. This is why I tend to find time to visit museums and galleries. It is important to get lost in the history and the art, and simply immerse myself in the culture of the exhibit in front of me.

Apparently, Marvel recently pulled the rug from under our feet with one of the biggest twists in comic book history to date.
