she takes stock of the house, noting that it was a lot more than the FIXER UPPER laila had told her it was going to be.  ‘ well homes like these especially in a climate like maine’s tend to just have a lot of old house noises from the wood and the metal being worn. ’  rowan clucks her tongue at the rotted wood of one of the stair railings.  ‘ how far did your parents get through in renovating it the first time around ? ’

‘ i mean considering how corrupt the police were like, all across the nation, i’m not surprised. ’

              the  crisp  january  wind  tousles  raven  locks  .   posture  tense  as  soon  as  he  steps  out  of  the  car  .  <<  HOME ( ! )  ,  HOME ( ? )  >>  ahead  :  hill  house  ,  —-  just  like  he  remembers  it  .  tall  ,  and  ominous  ,  and  dark  .  it  stands  proud  ,  giving  no  evidence  of  the  passage  of  time  .  he  feels  frozen  —-  hesitant  of  crossing  the  heavy  wood  door   .  it  really  feels  like  no  time  has  passed  ,  like  mom  was  to  come  out  and  call  him  for  dinner  anytime  soon  .  his  leg  is  starting  to  shake  a  little  .  anxiety  . 

it  is  a  loud  noise  that  breaks  him  out  of  his  trance  —  “   jesus  ,  “  left  hand  tightens  around  the  handle  of  his  suitcase  ,  and  the  right  one  runs  through  his  hair  .  uncomfortable  .  he  offers  a  smile  that  does  not  quite  reach  haunted  brown  eyes  “  how  long  have  you  been  standing  there  ?  “   

it feels really good to get back into the more physical aspects of her job, more often than not delegating others to break out a sweat instead of her. but the contractors don’t come until the day after tomorrow and there were some pesky weeds that grew into the ground floor’s windows in a way that prevented them from opening. taking the initiative, rowan grabs a pair of shears and works on getting rid of them. 

after some time she hears a car pull into the driveway and, distracted by the newcomer, doesn’t pay attention to where the handle of the shears pinch at her skin. rowan yelps, dropping the shears with a loud CLANG as it hits an exposed pipe on the way to the ground.  ‘ ahh, ’  rowan flings her hand back and forth like it’ll help the pain.  ‘ sorry, i was just trimming some of the bushes here. ’

‘ you’re saying it was an accident , so you accidentally put your hand through a mirror ? ’ jay @ rowan/luna ur choice

‘ um, ’  she cradles her hand closer to her chest, the motion stretching the gauze against her wound tighter. she tries carefully to conceal the wince it elicits, but it probably shows more unnatural than she intends it to. in truth, she doesn’t know how it happened, just that she came to standing ominously in front of her mother’s old vanity with a searing pain across her knuckles and broken glass at her feet. how else can she explain it when she doesn’t know what happened herself ?  ‘ yeah, why else would i put my hand through the mirror ? ’

‘ probably best you didn’t say anything to them . ’ laila @ luna

luna wonders, sometimes, if it were best if she actually took a side like the rest of her siblings have. it gets too exhausting for her to volley back and forth between them all, never being certain about her opinions, always being vague with her promises. such as now, in the face of their oldest sister, luna’s arms come up across her chest as she nods,  ‘ yeah, i figured. ’

‘ do you think there’s something wrong with me ? like , really wrong ? ’ laila @ rowan

she considers her for a moment, the conversation taking a serious turn as laila bears the question. in the years rowan has known her, there wasn’t a time that she hasn’t proven herself to be anything less than competent, even when things were going horribly south. but the question seems to be a culmination of all of the insecurities laila had incurred not only in the last few years but, what rowan has come to find out, also in her entire lifetime dating back to her childhood.  ‘ in my experience, ’  she starts, reaching out with a hand to squeeze her shoulder,  ‘ no, i don’t think so. ’
