Lab Visit 05: Virtual Reality Part 2.
Today we visited HUB Studio to experience Oculus Rift VR Worlds for the first time.
Hub Studios VR Artist and Honours student, Wesley Heard, started off by showing us all how he constructs 3D assets in 3D Max and then introduced us to the Unreal Engine interface.
Then the HUB Studio Sound Designer and Honours student, Nathan Corporal, introduced us to recording and editing (Reaper) sound for 3D Audio integration in VR (FMOD).
We then got to try out the Unreal Engine 4 demo, Showdown and other works such as Colosse, Dread Halls by Sergio Hidalgo and Nighttime Terror by Mark Schramm... and others. Such fun!
This was our last Masters session for this special unit. The Lab Visits were a wonderful experience and I can only hope that the students were inspired by the access so many wonderful people gave us to their studios, technologies, projects, designers, developers and researchers.
And a massive thanks to all of the students of the MCI IVD program at QUT. I learned a great deal from you all and very was reinvigorated as a lecturer by your energy, enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and creativity throughout the semester.

Today in class we tried Virtual Reality glasses. It was awesome. People had some very funny reactions!
Lab Visit 04: Virtual Reality Part 1.
Eyewear for Mobile VR. So much fun hearing all of the squeals of delight form the students who were all surprised by the effectiveness of the experience using such seemingly simple technology - In this case, Google Cardboard.
This is the Bambi story video. We use the sound of this video in our final video.
Here are 4 comic images in our application. All of story images are dedicate to show the simple but attractive stories. Children can touch and recognize the different comic characters via several distinct textures because we apply the latest tactile techniques in this application.
Case study 2 August Smart Lock
Overview: The August Smart Lock is a new iPhone-compatible locking system. This is a simple universal lock that is designed to connect to a smartphone using Bluetooth.
Technology/tools: This product is powered by Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology, which will enable it to work without connecting to a WiFi network. The team claims that it is the smallest electronic door lock on the market.
Case study 3 Keylock Pro RF
o Overview of the project
Keylock pro PF is an advanced digital lock product. This product is designed for private house. The latest product has two approaches to unlock. Firstly, people can use fingerprint to unlock the door. Furthermore, people can also use RF card as a key.
o The problem solved (the design challenge)
This product solves the problem that once people forget the key, they will not chance to unlock the door. If this product is used, people will enjoy a agreeable and fancy experience.
o Technology/tools used to make the work
This product has four methods to unlock. So there are four tools, which including an Optical Fingerprint Reader, an optional RF card reader, a pin panel and finally the mechanical keyhole. In spite of other three normal methods, the fingerprint method is a new stuff in this product.
o Interface Designs or Graphical Style (the look and feel of the project)
o User Engagement (how users interacted with the work),
Users do not need mechanical keys in most of times, because they can enter a door via scanning fingerprint. This a breakthrough in digital lock fields. People do not bother with the trouble that cannot find the key.
o Impact of Use (user reviews, articles, statistics...)
The owner must keep an 8 original number to control the system. Such as add a new fingerprint.
Children’s fingerprint may not work on this product, because the size of their fingerprint is not big enough.
The batteries problem
This product can operate for a year on a single set of alkaline batteries. ‘sleep’ mode can help the product working for a long time. Furthermore, people do not need to worry about their fingerprints data is lost, because the data are saved in non-volatile Flash memory. The working concepts is similar to MP3 player.
If you are looking for a Biometric Door lock with RF card, the Keylock Pro RF version has everything you need. RF card, Fingerprints, codes and a mechanical key.
Case Study 1 ‘BOLT – Lockitron’
o Overview (synopsis) of the project
This is an extant beautiful access system which is produced by Lockitron company. The preorder price is $99. It is a good symbol of the combination between real lock and phone system, just like their advertisement word, ‘Unlock your door without keys’.
o The problem solved (the design challenge)
The design is facing challenge that people can open the door without key, it is difficult to solve. The upgrade of access system is related a lot of problems. Such as the security problem and whether it is real convenient.
o Technology/tools used to make the work
They use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology. Smartphone plays a remote controller. People can easily control the door whether you want to open or close it. This function is realized by Bluetooth technology. Secondly, if you do not at home, you can also remote the lock by internet. In addition, the ‘virtual key’ can be a message which is sent to your friend, so that you can give the authority to anybody you want they come in instantly.
o Interface Designs or Graphical Style (the look and feel of the project)
The system consist of two parts which are lock and phone application. The interface design is clear and simple. Users can easily control the function.
o User Engagement (how users interacted with the work)
Because of this product, people do not need to worry about where is the key. Smartphone is become more and more important today. Most of people never forgot their phone today. Solving this problem by using phone application is a great method. So this product is believed can draw people’s attention and people would like to engage in it.
