Schandmaskes / Mask of Shame

During the medieval period and the Renaissance, and even into the age of Early Modern Europe, there were methods, rituals, and punishments to control and condemn behavior. One of the way was to use  Mask of Shame.

This Schandmaske ( as Germans called) from Austria from the 17/18th century.

"wagging tongue" to show that the wearer was an unapologetic gossip.

Barong Mask from Indonesia

Barong is a tangible assets of a protective spirit which guards people from evil influences. Mask is stored in the village temple, the Barong deity comes to earth during ceremonies and enters the body of a follower. The follower starts to move in a exotic way.

Mask of Agamemnon; The Mask of Agamemnon is an artifact discovered at Mycenae in 1876 by Heinrich Schliemann. This mask is made of gold and is a funeral mask found over the face of a dead body in a burial place at Mycenae. This mask is crafted out of pure gold and such masks were put on the faces of deceased kings and royal people. So, Schliemann  thought that the body and the mask are of the legendary King Agamemnon. But modern archaeological research suggests that the mask is from era much before the life and reign of Agamemnon. The mask is currently displayed in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

The viewer sees a picture representing a Venetian mask and is asked if he/she notices something special in it. A surprising number don’t notice that the main features of the mask are actually composed of two distinct faces: a man and a woman kissing one another. Once the viewer discerns two individual faces, his/her brain will ‘flip’ between two possible interpretations of the mask, making the viewer perceive two faces or one face in alternation. This kind of illusion, where the viewer experiences two equally possible interchangeable stable states in perception, is called “bistable illusion”.

Kwele Ekuk Mask, the Kwele protect themselves against the power of witchcraft with the ‘beete ritual’ , during the ritual, Ekuk mask  invite the people to come dance and sing. Ekuk means the 'spirits of the forest' and the 'children of the beete'. This mask, with two large horns, represents the antelope, which hunted and eaten at a meal at the closing ceremony.

Pig Mask is used in Chinese New Year Festival, Pig is the last of the 12 animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac, Pig is associated with fertility and virility.

In the year 2006, Nintendo realised Mother3 as new video game. One of the character is PigArmy, an army of people who wear pig-like uniforms,who suddenly invades the islands, subjugating its population.

One of the best known used of Pig Mask is in the Movie SAW (series) in Jigsaw’s apperentices.
