Pokémon AU

(I blame @brightresearcher for at least half of this.)

Alexander Mercury - or Alex for short - was born in Snowpoint, Sinnoh, into a family that has been known as the protectors of Lake Acuity since ancient times. He grew up there, spending most of his childhood and adolescence learning the ins and outs of medicine, and used to work as a doctor at the local Pokémon Centre despite his young age.

He developed an interest in pokémon and training from his encounters with travelling trainers visiting the town to challenge the gym, and started training pokémon himself. Back then, it was more of a side hobby, but he's long since become more serious about it after he started travelling on his own.

Although the protector title the Mercury family carries has become more of an informal one in recent years, Alex has always shown a great interest in his family's traditions and the mythology they're connected to.

When Team Galactic came to Lake Acuity to learn more about the area, Alex learnt of their plans and became fascinated with the idea of bringing back the old deities. He shared what he knew about both the lake and its mythological background, and decided to work together with the team. He ended up choosing to run away from home and effectively abandoned his cousin Mia and family values to help Galactic pursue their goals. Despite this, Alex never officially became a member.

He never intended to let Cyrus' plans come to fruition and planned to eventually betray him and the team, and to bring the deities under his own control instead. Things didn't work out that way, however, as Alex both underestimated the deities' power and didn't expect the League Champion and her little trainer friend to intervene.

After watching from the shadows as the events at Spear Pillar played out, seeing his plans utterly shattered, he chose to cut off contact with the people he knew in Sinnoh and set out to other regions to train, hoping he'd one day be powerful enough to control the force he witnessed that day. He's become quite the trainer since, using strategy and wit rather than raw strength to win his battles. He has no interest in the Leagues.
