As I mentioned in an earlier post, I love the way mxtx describes and highlights Luo Binghe’s eyes. Binghe’s eyes are piercingly bright and incredibly expressive, and it’s always the looks in his eyes that betray his changing moods and emotional turmoils. So let’s look at some examples (all the translations below are my own).

Binghe’s eyes are consistently compared to stars. Teenage Binghe’s eyes are “bright as morning star” (明若晨星). After Binghe returned from the Endless Abyss, his warmth and earnestness are gone; his eyes are still bright as stars, but they’re cold stars now. In chapter 49, Binghe’s eyes are compared to “cold stars sunk in deep pools” (两点沉潭寒星般的眸子).

And this is Binghe’s eyes when he gets seriously offended: “all of a sudden, his eyes grew cold like icy stars falling from the sky” (他眼中刹那间仿佛寒星陨落).

And this is how he looks at Shen Qingqiu: “his eyes, dark as the stars, were filled with laughter” (他漆黑如星眼睛里，满是笑意).

All of Binghe’s emotions can be read in his eyes, and mxtx employed some poetic and striking metaphors and imageries to capture Binghe’s intense emotions. For example this line:

“When he saw that Shen Qingqiu held back from dealing a deadly blow, light faintly rekindled in his eyes that had grown dim, like a spark of flame in its death throes on the burned ashes” (见沈清秋没有痛下杀手，他原本黯淡下来的眼睛里又有亮光隐隐闪现，就像焚烧过后灰烬中垂死挣扎的星火).
