Edit: Here is the action, after anon requested it.
First and foremost, I apologize ahead of time because this is not going to be an action. At the end of the tutorial, I'm going to include a link to a PSD with the smart filters plugged in. So you don't have to go through the trouble of loading an action and then playing it.
Before we get started, this will only be compatible with photoshop. Also, you must have a basic knowledge of giffing and photoshop and how to convert all your layers for smart filters. If you cannot do that, this tutorial might not be for you.
Go to Filter > Smart Sharpen. Amount should be set to 500%, then your radius amount must be set to 0.4px. Make sure you remove the Gaussian Blur, and don't touch any of the other settings.
Go to Filter > Smart Sharpen. Amount should be set to 20% - 40% (play around with it, see what looks good). Radius should be set to 20px (again, play around with it, see what looks good).
Go to Filter > Camera Raw Filter. Find the Effects tab. Texture should be anywhere from +25 to +45 (sometimes, depending on the movie, I have it in the high 60s or 80s). Then set Clarity anywhere from 10 to 25 (again, it all depends on the movie, play around with the sliders). Find the Detail Tab next. Set the Sharpening anywhere from 5 - 15. Set Noise Reduction anywhere from 10 - 20.
Go to Filter > Other > High Pass. The radius should be .4px, then go to the blending options and set it to soft light, or screen. I usually set mine to soft light.
The last step is the blurring. It subtracts a little bit of the grain that the denoise didn't cancel out. Set the radius to 1px, and then go to blending options and set it anywhere from 10% to 25%.
Click here to download the psd with the coloring included. It will load as one screencap and the smart filters will be there. You're going to window the psd and then drag the smart filter settings to the caps of your choosing.
Hi anon! sorry for the long wait but I was having a little break. I'll leave the tutorial under the cut (♡ˊ͈ ꒳ ˋ͈)
DISCLAIMERI didn't come up with this idea by my own. This gif is inspired by the first one in this beautiful gifset I found prior to my post, searching for inspo to my event.
As always, basic knowledge making gifs is required to do this.
BACKGROUND
For this part, I did a simple blend between the three clips of Rumi, Zoey and Mira, by creating layer masks (square button next to fx button in the layers menu). Always remember white is 100% opacity and black is 0%.
After that, I simply added a gradient map with both colors being two different tones of purple on top of the gifs.
GIF SQUARE
Now I took the rounded rectangle tool (U) - if you can't find it, press right click in the icon and the second option is the one I used:
Draw the shape however you like. Duplicate your second gif (it needs to be a smart object) and create a clipping mask by right clicking it
YELLOW SHAPE
To replicate the inspo mentioned at the beginning, I duplicated my first square and reduced its fill to 0% followed by adding a 4px stroke - You can do this by double clicking the gif or through the fx button in the layers menu.
FINAL TOUCHES
All it took from here was just adding curves, levels, brightness/contrast etc, and my texts. I still have the psd I used for colouring most of the gifs and I can put it out for download but I warn you that it needs to be adjusted depending on the scene you're working on.
But... that's it! :D
If you have any more doubts, don't be afraid to reach me again ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡

Hi! Thanks so much for asking <3 The gif referenced is below and the tutorial is below the cut! This is my first tutorial, so hopefully everything is clear enough.
Feel free to tag me using #emilyblr if you try it! If this is helpful, I'd appreciate you liking and/or reblogging this post to let me know. 🩵
NOTE: If something doesn't make sense or you don't see the settings, click on the photo! They are cropped in order to unify the size, however if you click on it you will see the full picture I included.
EDIT: For some reason, the formatting gets messed up for me when you click the read more on the dashboard. But if you go to this post on my blog, the photos seem to be in the correct places!
I. Create Your Base Text
First I create a new text layer and figure out my font settings (font, size, etc.). The text color should be white.
The picture on the right shows my settings—I like to unify the layer position and effects so that it applies to my entire gif (note: I make frames from layers so it's necessary for me; I'm not sure if it is necessary if you do the text in timeline).
Change the blending mode to exclusion (right), which gives you the image on the left.
Right click on the text layer and go to blending options. First I select drop shadow and use the settings in the photo on the top right.
Add gradient overlay. For this particular gifset, I used overlay for the blend mode (bottom left). The blend mode I use for the gradient changes based on the gif and the coloring, so play around with what blend mode looks best to you!
Add color overlay. I also play around with the blend mode and opacity for each gif; in this case, I set it to color burn and 50% opacity.
This is what we have so far.
II. Create Text Outline
Right click your text layer and duplicate the layer.
Open blending options and de-select drop shadow, gradient overlay, and color overlay (alternatively, you can right click and clear effects before opening blending options, but this is the way I do it).
Go to the blending options panel and set fill opacity to 0%.
Add stroke with the settings pictured in the bottom right picture (1px, white, inside, normal blend). The opacity for this gif is set to 58%, but I play around with the opacity for each gifset.
Use the arrow keys to offset the outline however you would like. I usually move it slightly to the left and up, as shown above.
III. Masking
Create a new text layer and style it how you would like. In this case, I just added a drop shadow with the settings pictured on the right.
Move the text layer to where you would like it to be (left).
Use the rectangular marquee tool to select the area with your text layer (top left).
Make sure you have the base text layer selected (top right).
With your text area selected, add a mask by clicking the third button from the left in the layers panel (bottom right). Now we have the image on the bottom left.
Select the mask you created and invert it, which gives you the image on the top left.
Hold the option key and drag the mask for your base text layer to the outline layer.
IV. Finishing Touches
Now that the focal text has been added, I can finish adding the rest of the text. And that's it!
Under the cut you can find 25 dash icons of Miley Cyrus. Please, do not claim these as your own, like/reblog if you take. Credit is also always appreciated but not necessary. I hope you guys enjoy and use them well!
could u do a subtitles tutorial? i would like to see how you do it.
hi there! there's nothing particularly special about how I do my subtitles, but I can share my personal process :) I'll show you how I did the subtitles for this gif:
tutorial below the cut <3
NOTE: if you view on the dash and you're on desktop, the format gets messed up. You can view this on my desktop blog or view it in mobile for the proper formatting. Click each photo to see the entire photo I included as tumblr will crop the images so that they're uniform in size.
i. Image Size
Before I do any subtitles, I make sure that my gif is whatever I want the final size to be (in this case, 540px x 380px). If you're making a set of gifs and they're all different sizes, then the same font size will look different on each of them and it will be harder to align everything.
ii. Creating an Action
I created an action for my subtitles (and use them for various other things, like coloring scenes). Here's an old tutorial on actions that I believe I read when I was learning to make gifs several years ago.
iii. Adding the Subtitles
First I make a new layer then create a text box. I write the dialogue that I have transcribed (top row; I have a note where I write down dialogue for scenes). I make sure to unify the position and effects (top right). I use Arial Rounded MT Bold for subtitles and have the font size at 19pt for most gifsets that are 540px. The smallest I usually go is 17pt for this font because I find it starts to look weird if I go smaller.
I right click the text layer and go to blending options, then add a drop shadow (top right) and stroke (bottom left). We then have the text in the bottom right picture.
iv. Placement and Alignment
I like to align my subtitles based on the position of the bottom line of text. I usually eyeball it and use the guides that appear, but if you want to be precise, you can make a new guide (top photo). Make sure to select horizontal orientation and then put what position you want the bottom line of text to be at—for this example, I did 20px above the bottom of the gif ([gif height] - [pixels from the bottom] = [position]; 380 - 20 = 360). The guide is shown in the bottom right image (it's turquoise) and I aligned the bottom of the text with it.
And that's it! If I need to, I play around with where the line breaks so it's more balanced, but in this case, I liked how it ended up so I just left it.
Let me know if anything's unclear. Hope that helps!
for the most talented person in this side of the site, i beg for a tutorial on your pretty, perfect coloring ✨❤️
ooh you are being way too kind <3 but I am happy to show my basic coloring process!
below the cut is a tutorial of my basic coloring process. this is how I do my base coloring for all gifs; if I'm doing some color manipulation or other fancy things, I do that after this.
if this is helpful, please like and/or reblog <3 it's nice to know since tutorials take time! and if you try this out you can always tag me using #emilyblr.
if you're having trouble seeing, click on the pictures to see the full image!
i. Curves
I always start with a curves layer and use the eyedropper to select a white point. In this case, I used the white spot circled on the left.
I decided I didn't like the way it looked using that white point - it was too red overall. So I tried a second spot (the reflection in her eyes). I mainly use the white dropper to help with coloring, so even though it's darker, I preferred this base.
I then use the curve to brighten the gif.
FIRST PHOTO: I start with the highlights, usually moving it up slightly.
SECOND PHOTO: I then will add a second point for the midtones, which doesn't usually change the coloring much but anchors the midpoint for when I adjust the shadows.
THIRD PHOTO: I add a third point to adjust the shadows and usually lighten them.
ii. Levels
Next I add a levels layer. I learned this from a pastel coloring tutorial I used 7 or 8 years ago. That tutorial shifted both the middle and right points to the left. I still start with moving the middle to the left and then move the circled one to the left, but I then usually move the middle point back to where it started (or close).
iii. Vibrance
Next is the vibrance layer. I move the vibrance up and it's usually anywhere between 20-80, but it depends on the gif. It mostly falls between 30-50.
iv. Channel Mixer
NOTE: I recommend reading this tutorial by @aubrey-plaza to help you understand the channel mixer tool. I also used this tutorial by @ajusnice to help me figure out my own coloring process.
FIRST PHOTO: I always start with the blue channel and increase both red and green; often, it'll be +8 for both, but it depends on the gif.
SECOND PHOTO: I then go to the green channel and add green to the red, usually +8 as well. Whether or not I add green to the blues depends on the gif, in this case I did +2.
THIRD PHOTO: I don't always add red back in, but in this case I used the red channel to add a small amount (+2) of red to the green.
v. Selective Color
FIRST PHOTO: For my base coloring, I only mess with the black slider. I always start by removing some black from whites (in this case, -8).
SECOND PHOTO: I then move to neutrals and will remove some of the black from there as well. This one is also -8. Lightening the neutral colors does usually lighten the skin tone, so it's important to remember to add color back in so as not to whitewash POC. The final layer adds the color back in to the gif, however with POC, sometimes you will need to add additional layers to make sure you are not whitewashing.
THIRD PHOTO: One of my favorite parts is increasing the black and seeing the contrast. The amount can vary significantly. For this one, I did +19, but I often will go as low as +8 and have also done +100 before, it just depends on the gif.
vi. Hue/Saturation
Starting with the master hue/saturation, I increase saturation as much as I want (often between +8 and +24). I don't touch the hue or lightness.
Now for one of my favorite parts: messing around with individual colors! Which colors I mess with depends on the colors in the gif, but I almost always do reds, yellows, cyans, and blues.
FIRST PHOTO: I start with reds, which is mostly going to affect the skin tone. I often will increase the saturation and the lightness. In this case, I did +19 saturation and +7 lightness.
SECOND PHOTO: There isn't much yellow in this gif, but I did it anyway to show what I often do. It tends to be the reverse of red. I increase lightness more than saturation, so in this case it's +19 lightness and +8 saturation.
THIRD & FOURTH PHOTOS: If I want to manipulate the color, I will mess around with the hue, but I usually just increase the saturation for the different blues in the gif (in this case, cyans +19 and blues +24).
And that's it! Hope this is helpful, feel free to reach out if you have any questions! <3

hi! so an anon asked how i did the blending on the first gif in this high school musical set! i use photoshop 2025 on a mac. you'll need basic gif-making knowledge!
step one: picking what to blend!
so for this, i picked a close-up shot of sharpay and one that was further back. i feel like this is a good way to go about blending in a lot of scenarios, but whatever works for you!! i also picked the close-up based on her dialogue, which i used as text on the gif!
step two: coloring
for the fully colored gif, i colored it as i normally do. if anyone needs a more in-depth basic coloring tutorial, let me know! but one tip that i honestly forgot about until looking at this again was that i added a gradient map layer and set the colors to black and pink (ff00a2) but then changed the opacity to 20% and set the blending mode to soft light. it gives the gif a little more pinkness to it!
for the black and white gif, i just added the same coloring from the colored gif and added a gradient map layer set to black and white.
step three: one document
now that your gifs are colored, you can put them in one document. these gifs are cropped to 540x540 and resized to the same. to do this, just convert your gif and coloring layers into a smart object and copy and paste. also make sure your gifs have the same amount of layers!
step four: blending
so now decide where you want to place your gifs. for this i placed the colored gif in the front (to the right) and the b&w in the back (to the left). it looks like i expanded them to make them look how i wanted. (i did make this a while ago!) but feel free to play around with it! make sure you hit shift and then expand with your mouse where the transform boxes come up!
within the layer order, the b&w gif should be on top of the colored gif. so while you have the black and white gif selected, create a layer mask. then use the brush tool (make sure foreground color is black and background color is white) and start erasing the middle and any harsh lines. my brush size was around 166. this is another great tutorial on the gradient method if you find it easier!
step five: adding pink color
now you're going to create a new layer and place it above the colored gif. set the brush color to pink (ff00a2). i usually like to make the brush size bigger for this. start using the brush on the edges and in the middle. then create another new layer and place it above the b&w gif. use the brush all around the edges and the middle. you then have to set the new layers to "color" so the pink is brighter and just pops better.
here's a pic of my layer order if that helps!
i hope this helps! and if anyone has any questions, let me know!
hi everyone! this is a little late but... i hit 1k followers last july ✨ it also happened to be the 10th anniversary of this blog (wild!!). this milestone means the world to me, so i knew i wanted to make something special to thank you guys. this pack contains 8 psds from some of my favorite gifsets that i made over the years:
from up on poppy hill - example
mulan - example
spirited away - example
rise of the guardians - example
ponyo - example
your name - example
yuri on ice - example
tangled - example
these psds mostly highlight the blues, purples, and pinks in your gifs, giving them a nice pale/pastel coloring. you may need to tweak some layers depending on the scene, but i hope this helps you out when you're giffing anime or animated films! feel free to tag me #userlostloves in your creations 💗
please like or reblog if you use or plan to use. if you want to support me, consider buying me a kofi ☕ thank you! 🥺💕
download the pack here.
edit (05 sept 2025): now updated with a new link! 💌
Under the cut you can find 08 dash icons of Kim Ji Won. Please, do not claim these as your own, like/reblog if you take. Credit is also always appreciated but not necessary. I hope you guys enjoy and use them well!
do you mind me asking how did you make the speech bubbles in this set?
Sure no worries! Tutorial is below the cut - hope it makes sense :)
Start with your gif coloured and sharpened how you like
go to the shape tool (this will usually be a rectangle or whatever shape you last used)
Right click it and select the "Custon Shape tool" - this will be a sort of blob icon. It looks like this:
In the top tool bar there will be a "shape" option
Click the drop down and select the shape you would like to draw. For the gifset you asked about I used the skinny speech bubble that looks like this.
now draw the speech bubble where you would like it on the gif there will be an outline of what you are drawing
this looks like this:
The shape drawn looks like this on my timeline
make sure you adjust this to make it the same length as your gif
you can adjust you speech bubble using the transform tool (ctrl + t). This way you can adjust the direction of the speech bubble if you like by right clicking and flipping it (or by just moving the corners around).
For the purposes of this tutorial i am just going to leave it where it is.
Next to get the effect I had on my speech bubbles change the fill to white
Now go to your shape layer and change the blending mode to "Difference"
now right click the shape layer and select blending options
you get a pop up like this
go into the color overlay the box should now be ticked and you'll get these options. change the blend mode to color and the red colour to the colour you'd like the speech bubble to be.
these are what my settings now look like for this screen
For the set you were talking about I also added a drop shadow. i clicked the drop shadow box and just used the defaults
this is what the speech bubble looks like now
if you'd like to change colour - just change the blue in your blend options :) (e.g. I could have also picked green)
You can also do a gradient fill instead if you like. To do this go to the gradient overlay section instead of colour
then do the same thing except with a gradient
you can also change the angle of the gradient if you'd like
