This is something I came to grips with as part of years of recovering from PTSD and it was so, so important. Realizing that the worst thing in my life has also happened to so many other people was at first disappointing because I wanted to be special to give my suffering meaning. Then I realized that my suffering isn't what makes me special or interesting. And once I let go of needing to be special, I started paying attention to all the ways other people enrich my life and just became happier.

Binging and whole season drops also seem to be a bit hard on fandoms and fan content creation.

Looking at eg. House of the Dragon last year, which spaced out 10 episodes over 10 weeks (that is 2 1/2 months) and the fandom content production and fandom discussions over multiple platforms were so high! It gave fans time to speculate, to produce and to wait for. It held the anticipation high and invigorated the fandom over a long time.

But Netflix (or other streaming services) when they drop a whole season in one go? I feel yes, many fans will watch it. But the vibe is very different. And there will be discussions and fan content, but I feel it is not necessarily good for a fandom in the long run. The built-up does not carry these fandoms as long for "casual" fans and will not bring the same influx of new fans and new content to those fandoms. And that is sad for fan spaces in my opinion.

It's not just fandom. When I teach popular culture, I also mention how binge culture is destroying the social function of shows.

In the traditional broadcasting structure, you have an episode a week at a set time - you sit down and you watch it, maybe make a family thing out of it. The next day you go to work, and your coworkers have seen the episode too, and you talk about it - because a tv show is a safe topic (not political, not too personal), so you have something to bond over/socialize.

But when a whole season drops at the same time... You either force yourself to binge it, turning your schedule upside down, or you watch it in bits, risking to fall behind. Say a popular show drops a season on a Saturday. On Monday at work, there will be people who haven't started it, people who are half-through, people who have finieshed it... Mix with the fear-of-spoilers culture, suddenly this point of bonding becomes restricted, even eradicated.

It’s also destroying show production. These days if a season isn’t binged in the first week — fully, completed, watched all the way through in THE FIRST WEEK — it doesn’t get renewed. There’s no opportunity for shows to grow legs and catch on. Netflix would’ve canceled The X-Files. Netflix would’ve canceled so many classic shows that were allowed to find their audience gradually.

I'd like to add that seasons with only 8 or 10 episodes are also killing fandom and the experience. Not on the scale that binge watching shows does but still. Does anyone remember when shows had 20, 22 or even 24 episodes in a season? Now you are lucky if the entire show gets 24 episodes before it's canceled in season 3. So much fun and deep exploration of characters and the world they live in is cut when you only have so few episodes. All we get is a very condensed or very simplified version of a show with those short seasons. It works for movies turned into limited series. But it doesn't work for a series that was always planned to be a series! And if the show has to built elaborate sets etc and uses those sets only one or two times instead of 5-6 times then this drives the costs up per episode. Also a 8 episode season lasts you only 2 months. There's just not a lot meat to the bone of a show. How often can you re-watch that?

And then there's 10 months of nothing new and lots fearing if the show will even be renewed. It's tiring and it doesn't get people invested. If in a 8 episodes season 2 episodes are misses/not well received ... people tend to dismiss the entire show. It is not as easy to do that with 16+ episode seasons. TL:DR: Give me back seasons that have at least 16 episodes and only release one episode per week! It's even ok to split the season into A and B with a month or two of a break in-between. This builds not only the audience but also the fandom. It gives creators time to engage and get more people interested.

I thought this wasn’t true, because how could it be true? How could one small store have more movies than an online database? So I googled it.

I am surprised and depressed to learn it’s 100% true, according to google. A Blockbuster store was required to have a minimum of 7000 titles, but most averaged about 10,000. Netflix has 4000 movies. (And 1800 tv shows if you want to count those, but even included, it’s still less)

Now I’m even more depressed about the collapse of physical rental stores.

EYE remember. They sicced the police and the National Guard on us. For exercising our constitutionally protected right to assembly and protest.

And I also remember how, especially under cover of darkness, cops became particularly nasty and brutal.

We protested to say Black Lives Matter,

People protested to Occupy Wall Street, the police brutally attacked them.

Water protectors protested at Standing Rock, police and the National Guard pepper sprayed them.

The police are attacking and killing unarmed protesters right now today at Cop City in Atlanta. So please let’s knock off the “imagine if people in the US protested like that” nonsense. Sometimes it feels like we stay protesting, like since before I was even ever born.

In addition to all the innocent and unarmed Black people they routinely murder, the police also did things like shoot protesters directly in the head with tear gas canisters, at point blank range. I remember police wilding out on students who were protesting at UC Davis campus to protest tuition hikes. I remember the police tear-gassing a young girl named Sarah Grossman. The cops gassed her in the face and she died from it. And the media even tried covering for the police by parroting their version of events that she had asthma.

But I do not begrudge the French protesters. Like, not at all. They are right to protest Macron’s callous neoliberal ass, and I hope they get what’s theirs. I hope they win. We are on the same side.

But yeah, let’s not divide and conquer by pitting “our” protests against “their” protests. Let’s not memory hole lived reality and dishonor all the protests that really truly did occur, and are still ongoing even as we speak.
