How do you deal with knowing a fandom is dying and trying to make sure that you don’t care about that?

a fandom is not dying as long as at least one person is still enjoying it and creating something about it.

so to answer your question, I never have to "deal" with it because I AM still enjoying and creating fan contents about it, therefor my fandom is not dying.

Never understood the people who complain about there never being enough ship fics for a certain ship and yet they never open a word document and write.

The first thing I did when I wanted content of a ship that had absolutely no fanfics was write the first fic for that ship. It may be the only ship fic of those character on ao3, but idc I write for myself.

And also, many people in this side of the fandom are grateful somebody took the first step. It builds community. And hell even if someone doesn't post fics, its still fun to write what u want because u can literally make it exactly what you want to read

yeah this. if you want something to exist, sometimes you'll just have to create them in order for them to exist. be the change you want to see

Is there a point where the indirect harm of supporting a fandom thereby keeping it popular thereby making the creator money they do bad things with is too much?

no. my beliefs have always been "enjoy whatever you want as long as you're not harming anyone in real life." sure, you can argue that but this person is a bad person and by being a fan of something they create you're either directly or indirectly supporting them. which is valid, if that is how you feel. but you (general you) don't get to tell other people how to feel and what to do.

so if you ask me, I choose to focus on my enjoyment and letting myself enjoy whatever fictional things I like. you can say it's selfish. you can say "I'm privileged enough to not care." but the thing is that you don't know me, you don't know other people who enjoy those things you say are "harmful to enjoy because the creators are bad people", you don't know what battles other fans are going through in their lives. so if these silly fictional things can help them cope, then I will never shame or judge them for enjoying those things.

but if enjoying these xyz things makes you feel guilty, then you'll have to ask yourself if the guilt of enjoying them outweighs the joy and comfort of enjoying them, and if continuing to enjoy them is worth it. that's only something you can answer. no one else can answer it for you.

you get to control what you enjoy and how you enjoy them. but you don't get to control other people's hobbies and fandom experience.

Maybe I'm lucky but I've noticed that taboo straight ships get way less harassment compared to taboo gay and lesbian ships. Any ideas why that is?

oof anon you're probably lucky because from my own personal experience (back when I used to ship a straight ship a very long time ago before yaoi takes over me) toxic straight ships get way more criticism from people in fandoms than toxic queer ships do. well, at least the toxic straight ship I used to ship (still do, but my brain is 100% taken over by yaoi at this point) got way more criticism in the fandom than toxic queer ships did. but maybe that experience was exclusive to that specific fandom I was in?

but unfortunately I don't know why that is. my guess is that it varies, depends on what fandom you're in. my former fandom was certainly different from yours.

that said, I do not condone any form of harassment, much less over fiction. you (general you) can dislike any ship you want for any reasons, but your personal feelings and discomfort do not mean you can harass real people over fiction.

I dont like when people say fiction is a parasocial or unhealthy coping mechanism because the first thing my therapist told me when i told him I was a fiction writer was...

"You could try to use fiction writing to calm your anxiety.".

And shocker....it did work for me and is still working and it even worked before I had a therapist

i used to be an anti a while back (and then "neuship" but still holding some strong anti beliefs) but i'll be honest after going through this blog and seeing some your takes (even the ones that have pissed me off because i knew they were correct but i didnt wanna admit it), im now writing dubcon and problematic age gaps and rpf from left to right. guess you can say i'm a proshipper now (though honestly i don't even call it being a proshipper. i call it being a regular sane human being with basic decency... though i guess that's too long of a name, huh?). so thank you and keep doing what you do. now back to writing that morally questionable rpf fic i should probably finish.

What are your thoughts on real person fiction? I feel like you have a pretty good moral compass and sometimes I have a hard time figuring out how I feel about rpf with all the arguing that happens about it in fandom

I just saw someone on instagram say that writing smut fic involving real life people is just as bad as creating ai deep fakes of them. Now maybe I'm biased cause I've enjoying rpf fics, but I feel like they're not even close to the same thing. I'm not crazy for thinking that, right?

I believe the main reason why ai deep fake can legally be considered sexual harassment--while rpf cannot be legally considered sexual harassment, unless the person who's being written about wants to take legal action (I don't even know if they can or on what ground, but I believe it won't be for sexual harassment), and that's another story--is because ai deep fake is "that person's hyper realistic face being portrayed in a sexual manner, and it can be difficult to know for sure if the image/the video is real or if it's ai", that's why it's harmful. while rpf is just words on the screen that are clearly portrayed as fanfiction. nobody is going to read a smut rpf on ao3 and think "oh this actually happens."

that's also why bad people hurt other people by creating ai deep fake about them, not by... writing a smut fanfiction about them.

so no, in my opinion, these two are not the same at all. not even close.

I don't know if this has been asked already, but is it okay to write non-con reader inserts? Where the fictional characters abuse/sexually assault the reader? Because technically the reader is not a fictional character? And that applies to everything and anything else too, like any other type of abuse.

it’s literally always okay because it’s fiction. doesn’t matter if the reader character gets sexually assaulted or decapitated or cannibalized or yeet to the moon or put in the human centipede au where their mouth is sewed to another character’s anus and they have to eat their feces. it’s fiction. IF someone chooses to read an x reader fic that is properly tagged as non-con, then they consent to reading a fic where the reader character goes through those things.

the reader character IS a fictional character that an actual real-life reader is supposed to imagine themself as, if said real-life reader wants to imagine themself as this reader character (that’s why fanfics with reader insert were originally called Imagine — back in the days, reader character gets sold to one direction to be their sex slave all the time in all those one direction x reader imagine, that’s like the most popular thing back in 2012-2013-ish). the reader character is not actually the reader, they’re not actually a real person with life or feelings. they’re words on the screen that people must choose to click on and read on their own free will.

nobody is actually getting harassed because their reader character is harassed in a reader-insert fic. if someone chooses to read it, then they consent to reading it. nobody is forcing them to read a fic where a fictional reader character gets assaulted.

there’s a huge difference between writing a dark fic where the reader character — that is a fictional character in a fictional story — is violated, and harassing a real person. the latter of which has nothing to do with a reader insert fic, no matter how shockingly fucked up the fic in question is.

you can report harassment and threats if someone harassed and threatened you. but you can’t report a fanfiction for harassment or threats just because the whumpee in the fictional story is called Y/N.

I once new a person who got mad at me for using non con fanfic as a coping mec, so she decided to tell some of our friends about my sexual assult story(without my perms) and used it to twist the story of why I write non con.

writing non-con fics does not hurt anybody, because fictional characters are not real and therefore they cannot actually be victims. whereas this person’s vile action caused direct harm to a real person. and they did it for the sake of imaginary people that don’t exist. absolutely vile. what’s even more sickening is that antis usually think they’re the morally superior ones by doing this.

when I say antis value the nonexistent lives and the nonexistent feelings of fictional characters more than they do the lives of real living and breathing people, this is what I mean.

i know that reader insert and oc are different things but sometimes i think they are similiar bc at the end of the day the reader is also an oc.

I don’t read or write reader-insert fics or fics with ocs. but as far as I know—while you can say that the reader is basically an oc—a non-reader oc is usually a character whose backstory, personality, and physical appearance have been decided entirely by its creator. while ‘the reader character’ is supposed to be a blank page, blank role where any reader can step into and feel like this is them. obviously I get that even Reader character has to have at least some personality, they have to make some decisions or say things that are decided and written by the author. but unlike ocs where it’s 100% author’s influence, a Reader insert is usually about 10-40% author’s influence.

also by your logic about reader being an oc, which is not untrue, every canon character is also an oc. because canon characters are their original creators’ ocs. every single character that has been written about is an oc. but we create different terms for them so that it’s easy for us to know what role of a character we’re looking at.

we don’t call canon creators ocs because they’re not our ocs. we don’t call Reader characters ocs because audiences should be able to differentiate between ocs and Reader characters, and choose if they want to read a fic with an oc, or a different fic with a Reader character where they get to feel like they’re in the story too.

Does Whump have to have a happy ending? I’m pretty sure you defined it before but I couldn’t find the post 😭

here’s the definition of whump.

whump can have any ending you want, happy, sad, bittersweet, hopeful. whatever you want. the term whump only means “character going through bad things”, but the term alone does not affect or dictate how a story ends. it’s the same as “horror movies can either have a happy ending or a sad ending”. a movie being a horror movie doesn’t say anything about its ending. the same applies to whump.

if you write a whump fic with a sad ending, then you might want to tag it as “whump”, “hurt no comfort”

but if you write a whump fic with a happy or hopeful ending, then you might want to tag it as “whump”, “hurt/comfort”

or you can just tag it as whump if you don’t want to spoil your readers how it ends.
