SUMMARY FOR ASSESSMENT THREE "ANIMAL INSTINCT" My theme for Assessment Three, followed the topic of "Animal Instinct", from drawing inspirations from my own self taken images from the zoo, i was able to explore the different patterns of 9 different animals of my choice and find new methods and techniques to manipulate and form new prints using their old ones. My main aim for my project was to cleverly use all features of my 9 chosen animals to make a whole new animal using the new prints I had constructed through experimental processes and techniques. The topics of process, mark making, documentation, erasure, failure and chance are all prominent topics that can be visually seen through my experimental process through my main tumblr. What may see like a chaotic representation of animal prints and shapes... probably is! But its with this chaos that comes order and well thought out intentioned through out my work. I have used similar colours which can be seen through the arrangement of my images above as a cohesive series each evoking characteristics, colours, prints, and movement of the 9 chosen animals. The 10th image, strays away from the realistic, however incorporates realistic aspects of my 9 prints. Through my process of experimentation my series has come to evoke my own style and working method, as which each experimentation I was able to learn new things about my strengths and weaknesses, which are aspects that I believe I have taken away from the class this semester to help support my artistic process and keep me growing as an artist.

Final Posts for Assessment Three- COFA1001 IMAGE TEN: Ele-leo-hidna-bra-pea-ale-raffe-da-ake My final image brings a sense of humour and fantasy into the mix as the audience considerably question whether what this image consists of. However what seems like a mish-mash of animal parts is in fact the workings of both experimental process, and chance where i have ultimately incorporated key features of my newly formed animal prints and montaged them in a way, where you can wonder what parts have i used for where? How does this animal move? What are its defence mechanisms? Where does it live? Yes, this image is supposed to keep the audience guessing and wondering, and even spark their own imagination in to what animals could be created out of what parts, how they would move .. etc. I felt that photoshop was the best technique in order to group my image together so each element of the animal pattern that I have manipulated and chosen, can feature cohesively with the other parts of the various other animals. Each one of the animals i have manipulated are present in this image: Peacock feathers: At tail Zebra print: back legs Jewels from religious elephant: Front (back) legs Snake wax form: back of body leopard shape: as the main body Ivory: back (front) legs Giraffe legs: Front legs Echidna body: Defence mechanism for face (facial structure) Panda features: Work as eyes, ears, nose mouth. The Whale element has been worked into the final image through the background of water, giving the illusion and power of my newly formed creation the feature of swimming. Overall the 10th and final image is a representation of the various iterations, steps, experimental processes, chance, failure and erasure techniques i have come across through not only this assessment but across the whole semester. This Ele-leo-hidna-bra-pea-de-raffe-da-ake, is somewhat unrealistic however incorporates the realistic elements of my materials and sculptural processes I made experimented with along the way. This is in fact a 2D image, but if made 3D it would consist of each physical structure I created to create the other 9 animal prints. In saying that I also believe that this 2D representation, also incorporating each physical process and experimentation I encountered along the way ultimately sums up my series as a whole, and achieves what my own brief set out to do, which was to manipulate animal patterns with my own interpretations to overall piece them together in my 10th and final image of my newly formed animal.

IMAGE NINE: The Leopard Being one of my favourite animal prints, and one that is not only used in art, but in fashion, textiles etc. I felt it was important that i have my own recreation on this very iconic leopard print. Originally a sculpturally work most of my experimental process for this particular work lies in the painting techniques, stencil making, the paint colourings itself, and the placement and arrangement of the final image. The black outline on top of the leopard recreation (which is painted onto calico material for the element of texture) is an outline of a leopard, although it is very hard to work out from first glance, it was through my experimental process of pattern making which prompted me to mirror the image, which was an element that was very prominent in my first assessment using the mirroring images of the spray painted scarred hands. The leopard is mirrored and creates a visually aesthetic print and image, as the viewers eye can easily gaze over the symmetrical image identifying the well known print through its manipulation and question to what is the black outline on top? Another reason the leopard has been mimicked in the stencil is due to the way they move, which is very fast giving the illusion of many feet at once. It was this topic of movement that I also wanted to convey in this work and that has been very abstractly successful.
Final Posts for Assessment Three- COFA1001 IMAGE EIGHT: The Whale One of visually interesting images from my whole series would be my whale. This is because it used the topic of process, through myself tediously carving away every feature of the whale that was visually apparent on their body. Not only was process used but the element of gaining technique, why is this important? Well if i had not experimented with carving at a candle to create my echidna figure, it would not have prompted me to experiment with carving at a softer material of soap in order to create this image of my whale. Chance also played a very big part in this image, as from the experimentation with paint and soaking the soap into water, I was able to use the product of the soap slowly deteriorating into the container of coloured water, which ultimately in my opinion made this image as strong as it is. This like others of my series is a sculptural work, where I have documented the process using my camera, and made slight editing changes in terms of creating the most vibrantly stimulating image and representation of a whale I could. Through techniques using cropping and overlapping I was able to attach tiny details of the whale, which too are my own manipulation and interpretation of the barnacles that give an overall realism to the work itself.
Final Posts for Assessment Three- COFA1001 IMAGE SEVEN: The Giraffe This work in particular proved to be quite experimental due to the fact i was unaware as to where I was following onto after each iteration and step I achieved. However another aspect of class that I used in this assessment was to continue producing experiments with new materials and eventually new ideas will form and more experiments will happen. It was from my experimentation with the materials of leaves that sparked my imagination to think larger in stature as most of my works had so far had elements of both 2D and 3D works, I felt bringing a large sculpture into the mix was something visually stimulating. Through a messy, leaved filled backyard, to a perfectly formed giraffe sculpture of leaves measuring around 3-4 meters in length, it is safe to say that my small experimentation using only 1 leaf lead to something bigger and ultimately better for my project. The finishing iterations were made on photoshop, where I brought brought a sense of realistic qualities into the mix by changing the colour of leaves to produce a more "giraffe-coloured" image. Overall this is one of my favourite pieces as it relied very much on not only experimental process but also our first topic of mark making, as I temporary turned a segment of my backyard into a home for this giraffe.

IMAGE SIX: The snake Both chance, failure, erasure AND experimental process were all key aspects that contributed to the overall final image of the reinvented snake above. Through the use of the materials of candles which popped up in other elemental processes of my final images, it was this material which made the manipulation of the snake so successful. Through creating a mould out of tin foil, and experiences various failures in terms of trying to coil the wax mould and having it break, I was able to learn from my experiments and in the end successfully manipulate and have my own take of the snakes skin and form. Chance played a very big role in the overall texture of my snake pieces, as the tin foil, once in contact with the wax interior, shaped and formed itself due to the weight of the wax and created a new texture to the already iconic snake skin pattern, so popular today. Photography is an aspect that I believe was not only part of the documentation of the experimental process, but with the final images brought a sense of reality, which was an aspect I really aimed to evoke through my series.
Final Posts for Assessment Three-COFA1001 IMAGE FIVE: The Panda The topic of erasure is something that became a very prominent aspect in my art making process, as from class lessons where we took away and added, then took away again features of a work I could not help but think that during my own experimental processes with my work i was constantly changing my ideas and taking away features that I was not happy with. It was this aspect of erasure that can be found in my panda image above. Through the entire process of this panda experimentation, I was intent on filling the picture and having a background for my work to look most complete and full...However through the topic chance, I stripped away the hard work I had achieved in creating a replica of a panda out of different rocks to produce this image, which I ultimately found to be the strongest element out of my entire experimentation. The "White background" aspect is one that teachers and students both cringe over, however it was the black and white feature of the panda that meant it was vital I keep these tones visible in the work. Although to some this white-ish background may be cringe worthy but I still incorporated the aspect of the bamboo texture as a background, so that the eyes, ears, both and arms still remained the dominant feature of the image, showing my manipulation of the panda's look, which again is the main theme in my series.
Final Posts for Assessment Three-COFA1001 IMAGE FOUR: The Zebra The incorporation of the zebra print in one of my works, I believe was vital, in terms of it being one of the most iconic animal prints. The experimental process was a huge feature within this work in particular as I was unaware of where the original stencil I had created out of cardboard, without tracing would take me. Therefore many forms of experimentations were used in terms of lighting, painting, positioning and placement, however in the end I felt that the montaging of various stencils and shapes I had created with the stencil itself became the strongest to me, in conveying my theme of altering and changing animal prints. The overlapping technique using photoshop sparked from our very first class lesson of adding to each others drawings, whether that be around the drawings or right over the top. However at the time, shocked that someone would even dare overlap our own work, looking over it time and time again, the image is somewhat improved as it incorporates and other process, technique, voice and image, bringing character to the work. It was this aspect which inclined me to use this image as one of my finals.
Final Posts for Assessment Three- COFA1001 IMAGE THREE: The Echidna Playing with the idea of chance, is a concept that I took away from our lessons very strongly. For the echidna work i wanted an experimental process that was not necessarily meant to last a long time, which brings to the fore the ephemeral process and works incorporating this topics, which is another aspect from class i was interested by. Using the not so common materials of a candle, which was carved into a replica of an echidna complete with matches for spikes, i was able to extend and emphasise the feature which drew me to choosing the animal as one of my final 10 itself, the spikes. Chance and failure also came into play when documenting this work, as it was chance that caused the matches to spontaneously start lighting themselves creating a never before seen echidna with extendedly long spikes moving with the wind. Where as failure came into the mix when i expected the flame to stay at a steady pace and length, but due to my own safety and the wooden railings surrounding I had to extinguish the "by chance" masterpiece I had created. Photoshop allowed me to use the idea of multiplying and acting like a story board in this work, where each process of documentation of the burning echidna can be seen, however coincidentally keeping the natural colours of the echidna itself present, while at the same time transforming its body and form into a burning, beastly creature.
Final Posts for Assessment Three- COFA1001 IMAGE TWO: The Peacock Following my animal instinct theme working with altering animal prints, my only bird was the peacock. I chose this particular bird species because i felt it was the most interesting in terms of colours used, and there was a lot I could experiment with the print. In class and as a homework task we experimented with using various and different materials to create a work. It was this concept that I wanted to bring to the fore of this work in particular. Instead of experimenting with paints of any sort, I went straight to the construction of the feather pattern itself, using real feathers. Although this was a quick experimentation in terms of placement and colouring of the feathers, I used the element of photoshop to truly manipulate and alter the peacocks natural feather. Overall i felt i have stayed true to the original colourings of the feathers which drew me to the bird in the first place, however using the process of making my own mark again, I feel i have successfully altered the peacock feather.
Final Posts for Assessment Three-COFA1001 IMAGE ONE: The Elephant The overall idea for my work incorporating the elephant, sparked from an experimentation I initially did in my first assignment, where I was making a collage pattern from my shape of a hand. It was from here where i had my "light bulb" moment and realised that the elephants own life is quite two fold, where in different cultures the elephant itself is treated in very contrasting ways. 1.Religiously 2. Cruelly Where I ave represented these two themes through the use of traditional beadings for the religious side of the elephant, and using ivory itself for the cruelty aspect. Ultimately combining topics of failure, trial and error and mark making, I was able to extend the elephants original skin type, where I brought not only vibrant aspects, but also dull and controversial aspects such as the incorporation of ivory. This is a mixture of both 2D and 3D work as I have edited the 3D objects using processes and experimentation in photoshop
For my 10th image, my overall aim was to create a creature using the 9 different animal prints that i had created. Therefore i felt that the best way to incorporate all elements of my newly formed animal prints was on photoshop. I used the cropping and erasing tool to to eliminate some areas of the whole picture of my image, slowly building up the body of a new creature. This was a very tedious process, that was also left up to chance as to what parts fit where onto the new animal.
I also upped the vibrance of the entire image also to create an eye catching bold image, which gave more detail to the barnacles. I decided on a slight posterization and i felt it enhance these hidden lines present on the whales size, which came naturally due to the paint dissolving into the water... Overall i am very happy with this image and was probably the most fun to experiment with in terms of using the new material of soap, which by the way was easier to cut than candle wax !
