"Phew... finally put the gremlin down for her nap," Luke sighed, plopping down beside me on the mattress.
The sunlight filtered through the blinds, highlighting his jet-black curls as if it were drawing my hand to it. When my fingers finally combed through his disheveled hair his shoulders dropped as he let out one big exhale.
"Hey, she gets her gremlin energy from you. Not me." I chuckled.
He rolled over on his side with a pout, pulling me in by my waist so we were now lying eye to eye. Though his eyes drooped with eye bags, those baby blues were still as clear as the day I met him.
"Me? Darling, that's absurd. You're the one who was dancing on tables in LA," Luke mentioned with a devilish smirk.
I rolled my eyes, groaning. He laughed in response. I was so wasted that night that I can barely believe I remembered it. It had been so long ago, the thought of motherhood wasn't even really a thing. Nor was marriage. It had just been him and I in all our youth...
"Yeah, well... we've come a long way from that," I replied softly, scooting closer to him so my leg hooked over his and my hand cupped his cheek.
He just hummed in agreement as my thumb brushed against the stubble on his chin. I remembered days when all his jawline had was peach fuzz. It made me smile, knowing I had watched Luke grow from a boy to a man. He's really filled out his frame, no longer lanky and slender but finally having a bit of bulk on his body.
"Y’know… It's all thanks to you. I don't think I would've made it this far without you," he says, finally breaking the quiet hum of the road rolling beneath the tour bus.
"All those nights of missing home, the fear instilled in me during quarantine, doubt that had me in a chokehold... you were always there." he listed off, gently rubbing my back.
"And I'll always be there," I promised, kissing his nose.
"You better be." he jokes, that trademark grin spreading across his face that I loved so much.
"I mean, you survived the Don't Stop era. nothing gets worse than that," he says, shivering like it was so awful to remember.
"Heyyy! I like Don't Stop," I pouted, shoving him playfully.
"And you also liked my lip ring. I don't think you have good taste, sweetie." He jokes. I laugh in response, pushing him away. He just pulls me in even closer as retaliation.
"Yes, I do. Because our baby has the best father ever and I married the man who made Start Over. Now that's a good song." I say, poking his cheek.
"Yeah, better than don't stop." He snorts. The guy seriously can't let it go…
"Hey, stop dissing that song! Seriously, you guys were young and... well, your music has grown. Nothing wrong with that. It's been... what, 12 years of self-titled?"
It's quiet between us again like that fact settled heavily on him. From the way he zones out, I can tell the memories are flooding back to him nonstop.
"Yeah, 12 years. Wow. 12 years ago I didn't even know what I was doing. Sometimes I still don't even know what I'm doing." he jokes, shaking his head.
"Well, whatever you're doing, I think you're doing it perfectly," I said, kissing his nose. his nose scrunched up as he lightly giggled.
"I think so too. 5SOS is alive and well. I got a beautiful wife and a precious baby girl. I don't think I could've even dreamt this up 12 years ago," Luke said, his voice soft as his hand moved to cup my face. His thumb brushed against my cheekbone before kissing my lips softly. He still tasted like morning coffee... perfectly sweet.
"Pfft. Cutie," I said, a little flushed. His kisses still could make me blush like a schoolgirl with a crush even after all these years. Even though I was his wife.
"Whaaat? I'm in love with you. And I can't wait to dream up more years with you." He said softly while smiling. Really smiling, the kind where the corners of his eyes wrinkled.
"Yeah? Where do you see us in 12 years, then?" I asked, tucking a stray curl behind his ear.
"Man, I love this lifestyle but I really hope in 12 years being on the road means driving our kids to school and not being on tour," he replied. I chuckled and nodded, knowing exactly what he meant. This lifestyle wasn’t exactly a forever kind of thing.
"Hey, wait. Kids? Plural? How many more do you want me to pop out, this little girl is a handful already!" I laughed. Not to mention birthing her was not the easiest task.
"10? 10 sounds good." He jokes and I damn near choke on my spit.
"Yeah, right. You can't even keep up with one," I giggle.
"I can't even keep up with the 3 I tour with," he jokes, and I can't help but laugh along with him. Our laughs seemed to harmonize together, a reminder of how lucky I was to have him. My best friend. My husband.
"Okay… then two," I concluded once we stopped giggling so much. He nods.
"Two. Two sounds good. and a dog," he adds.
"We're definitely gonna need to move out of our penthouse for this," I snickered, though the thought had always been in conversation between us.
"Oh, for sure. I've been thinking lately... what about going back to Australia? We could live by the beach and just have a quiet life for our family and us." He finally speaks up. It sounds like something he's been thinking of for a while and the thought of it is beautiful. Maybe even more beautiful than anything I could ever dream up.
"A quiet life for us, huh? That... sounds nice."
It'd have to wait though. Not with our baby waking up from her nap, wailing like sleep inertia was the worst thing that's ever happened to her. Luke groans, crawling off the bed defeated.
"Guess I'll go get your baby now.." he sighed, rubbing his eyes.
"Hey, she's your baby too!" I chuckled, climbing out of bed with him.
Despite his being a drama queen, I ran up to hug him before he could leave the room. My cheek was pressed against his back and the scent of his laundry detergent filled my nose. He chuckled, turning around to face me and placing a kiss on my forehead.
"I'm really proud of you, y'know that?" I asked softly, looking up at the blonde giant.
"I hope I keep making you prouder and prouder every day, then," Luke replies softly, the two of us swaying side to side.
"I know you will. You have been since day one," I smiled up at him.
"Well, I still can't even believe you've stuck around since day one. How'd I get so lucky?" he sighed contently before turning to go carry our baby from her bassinet.
"Whatever I did in my past life to deserve this, I sure hope I do it again in this life. Just so I can marry you all over again in the next life," he said all while cradling our baby. In that moment my heart seemed to melt, my cheeks hurting from smiling so damn hard. How was this man so perfect? I'll never know.
I watched as he shushed our daughter, bouncing her up and down gently. He cooed at her, distracting her with one of the toys Uncle Calum had gotten her. I just leaned against the doorway, watching the sight unfold. Maybe I would pop out nine more kids just to see him like this each time.
Kidding.
I guess I'd just have to find him again in my next life.
