Danny Williams considered himself a man of principle. He liked clear rules, decent coffee, and people who didnât make his life harder than it already was. So when Steve McGarrett casually dropped the bomb that his best friend from the Naval Academy was moving to the island to join Five-0, Danny braced for another hurricane.
He didnât expect her.
She wasnât just trouble, she was sun-kissed disaster wrapped in a slinky dress and combat boots, and Danny didnât trust her the second she smiled at him with that infuriating glint in her eyes.
âIâm not here to step on any Jersey toes,â she said on her first day, propping her feet up on an empty desk like she owned the place. âUnless theyâre asking for it.â
Danny had blinked. âYou realize this is a government facility, right? Not an open mic night at a surf bar.â
She just winked. âRelax, Danny. Iâm fully qualified. I passed the psych eval and everything.â
âSomehow, that doesnât reassure me.â
And yet, against his better judgment, he kept watching her.
The way she handled herself in the fieldâfast, fearless, decisive. The way she cracked a joke under pressure just to keep everyone grounded. She reminded him of Steve in all the worst ways, and all the best ones, too.
But it was the quiet moments that got to him. The way her voice softened when she talked to victimsâ families. The way she always brought him an extra coffee without being asked, saying she liked the way he muttered complaints into the lid. The way she called him âDannoâ with just the right amount of sarcasm to make it sting and stick.
He was falling. Slowly, stupidly, against every ounce of logic he had left.
It all came to a head one night after a long caseâgunfire, a car chase, and a suspect with a machete who very nearly took Dannyâs head off. She had tackled the guy from behind, saving him with a wild, breathless kind of bravery that made his chest ache.
âYouâre insane,â he said afterward, as she cleaned the cut on his arm in the Five-0 kitchen. âYou couldâve gotten yourself killed.â
She was close. Too close. Her hands were steady, but her eyes, those damn eyes, held a flicker of something softer. âYouâre welcome.â
He swallowed. âThatâs not the point.â
âYouâre welcome, Danno,â she said again, quieter this time.
He didnât say thank you. He couldnât. If he did, heâd say too much. So he stared at the wall while she wrapped him up in silence, and he tried very hard not to notice how her fingers lingered on his skin.
Later that week, she knocked on the door of his apartment. Windblown hair, bare feet, a six-pack of beer in one hand.
âYou looked like you could use a distraction,â she said.
Danny opened the door. He didnât think. Didnât hesitate. âYouâre my favorite kind.â
They didnât talk much that night. Just the sound of waves outside his balcony, her laughter, his stubborn heartbeat catching every time she leaned in too close.
âYou know Steveâs gonna kill me if he finds out,â he said eventually, beer halfway to his lips.
She smirked, nudging his foot with hers. âLet him try.â
And maybe that was the moment he gave up pretending. Because yeah, she was reckless and complicated and a walking contradiction to every safe decision heâd ever made.
But she made him feel alive in a way he hadnât in years. Like this place, this unpredictable, sun-drenched island, might actually be starting to feel like home.
So when Steve cornered him a few days later, arms crossed, eyebrow raised, and said, âYouâve got it bad, buddy,â Danny didnât even deny it.
âYeah,â he muttered. âI know.â
Steve just sighed, clapped him on the shoulder, and walked away.
That night, when she curled up next to him on his couch, her head on his shoulder and her laughter still echoing in his ears, Danny let himself believe, for once, that maybe falling for trouble wasnât the worst thing heâd ever done.
Hawaii Five-0 - Steve McGarrett x Female Marine OC
The salty Hawaiian breeze kissed your face as you stepped off the plane, seventeen years of service in the Marine Corps still echoing in your spine. Retirement was freshâstill too new to feel real. You hadnât figured out what came next. You only knew Steve McGarrett had left a message on your phone.
âCome see me. Got something for you.â
Cryptic, classic McGarrett.
You spotted him before he saw youâleaning against his black Silverado, sunglasses on, arms crossed like he was still on a mission. Broad shoulders. Jaw tight. That same unreadable expression you knew too well. A part of you clenched at the sight of him.
He looked up andâthere it was. That flicker in his eyes that always made you feel like the only person in the room.
âWelcome home, Marine,â he said, pulling you into a hug. It lingered a second too long, just enough for your pulse to notice.
âSteve,â you murmured against his shoulder before pulling back. âYouâre a sight for sore eyes.â
âI heard you were getting out. Thought Iâd make sure you didnât do something stupidâlike take a job in D.C.,â he said, only half joking.
You smirked. âI had a few offers. Some safer. Some colder.â
âExactly why I want you here.â He opened the passenger door. âCome on. Letâs talk.â
The drive was quiet, comfortable in that way it only is with someone who knows your silences. You watched the palm trees blur past, felt the sun warming your skin, and tried not to let your mind spiral with the sudden familiarity of it allâof him.
âStill brooding behind the wheel, huh?â you teased.
His lips twitched. âStill reading me like a book, huh?â
He pulled up to the Five-0 Task Force HQ and parked. âCome inside.â
You followed him through the glass doors, trying not to marvel at the space. âThis is your base of operations?â
âYeah. And Iâm down one field agent. Thought you might be interested.â
You raised an eyebrow. âThatâs what this is about? You want me to work with you?â
âI want someone I trust at my back.â His voice dipped lower. âSomeone who wonât flinch when things go sideways.â
You stepped closer, tone light but your eyes locked on his. âIs this a job offer or a rescue mission, McGarrett?â
Before he could answer, Danny strolled into the room holding two coffees and stopped dead.
âOh wow, sheâs real. I thought maybe you hallucinated her.â He turned to you. âDanny Williams. Iâve heard a lot about you. Mostly during Steveâs long, overly detailed ânot thinking about her at allâ rants.â
You blinked, amused. âThat so?â
Steve shot him a look. âDannyââ
Danny just kept talking. âYou know, he does that whole âIâm fineâ thing, but every time your name came upââ
âDanny.â
ââhe got all broody and needed to go for a run. Alone. In the rain.â
You covered your mouth, trying not to laugh. âReally?â
Steve scrubbed a hand over his face. âHeâs exaggerating.â
âIâm not,â Danny said, offering you a coffee. âAnd Iâm telling you right now, if youâre joining the team, you should know: this oneâs been in love with you forever.â
Silence.
You blinked. Steve stared at the floor.
Danny looked between you. âOh. You didnât know? My bad. Carry on.â
He walked out like he hadnât just detonated a relationship mine in the middle of the room.
You looked back at Steve. âIs he serious?â
Steveâs throat bobbed as he swallowed. âDanny talks too much.â
âThatâs not a no.â
He exhaled, pacing a little before he stopped and turned to you. âIâve thought about it, okay? About you. But timing was never on our side. We were always oceans apart. Deployments. Distance. Duty.â
âAnd now?â you asked quietly.
âNow⊠youâre here. And I donât know what the hell to do with that.â
Your heart pounded. âYou could start by asking me to dinner instead of offering me a job.â
His lips twitched again, but softer this time. âIs that a yes to both?â
You smiled, slow and sure. âYeah. Itâs a yes.â
From down the hall, Danny yelled, âFinally!â
Steve groaned, but you just laughedâbecause for the first time in a long time, everything finally felt like it was falling into place.
