Merry Christmas Internet!
Merry Christmas internet. Here is a Christmas card that I did a few years ago. Here’s hoping for a more peaceful 2016.
Why the Y? Because the Riverfront YMCA is not long for this world once developers get their mitts on this 1960’s picture postcard building. Des Moines, 2013.
r.i.p. ymca 2015
Half-round. This poor guy. A dumpy parking lot used to be its nearest neighbor; now it’s being hemmed-in by dumb and dumpy condos. Why are developers such idiots? Is it a job requirement? Des Moines, circa 2013.
The old New Oriental Food Store. Had a couple of pix languishing in my drafts folder for a couple of years--and now they are history. They’ve been renovating this building and revealing the original facade (which is good I guess?) Des Moines, circa 2013.
Just a head's up since this tumblr's been pretty quiet for awhile that Almost Free is my main photography tumblr, but I have other ones as well--Posy is my personal blog and it's a bit more active than this one lately.
Merry Xmas.
Happy Thanksgiving! Card #2 in an ongoing series.
This is Fucking Iowa. 'nuf said.
This is Iowa. Here's an exterior shot just to prove we don't spend all of our time indoors in Iowa...(oh wait...)
#theblandleadingthebland
This is Iowa. Visit Iowa, we've got FUTONS! (also apparently, cameras that don't focus).

This is Iowa. The travel IOWA campaign has borrowed the "This is Iowa" slogan from my pretend Ministry of Tourism and Public Information pamphlet. (Although channel 5 or 8 has also been running segments using this slogan too). Here's the link that has a full copy of the zine that I did several years ago http://theministryofinformation.tumblr.com/
I knew it was such a stupid slogan that some marketing genius wouldn't be able to resist it for long. That's the problem with satirizing government/corporate marketing, it's already so dumb, that it's hard to tell when it's real and when it's a joke. Sort of crazy how bad ideas trickle up.
I know when I think of Iowa, the first that comes to my mind is a stock photo of a bland conference room/lodge. THIS is Iowa. No, This IS Iowa. No, wait, This is IOWA! You nailed it, travel IOWA!
Look for "Now You Know Iowa" (the Ministry's current slogan) to be in general use next year.
(Actually, this is an interior shot from the visitor's center at the Pirate Ruins on the Missouri River.)

The Political Season. Vote Chub!
The Political Season. A bumper crop. Context is so important in getting your political message across. Marion County, 2013.
Deco Des Moines. 2013.
Circular Logic. I always try to imagine what kind of developer would go to the trouble of building a round house. I admire that person's spirit and total commitment to ignoring the concerns of budget, efficiency, and good sense. Bravo! Des Moines, 2013.
Lustron Lovin'. The best part of the lustron homes are the out-buildings that are covered in lustron siding too. They are like mini versions of the already-pretty-tiny houses. Des Moines, 2013.
