"Curt?"
The soft voice sounded childish for someone who was almost fourteen, but it cut through his blazing headache like a knife all the same.
Dr. Curt Connors opened his eyes to see the teenager standing in the kitchen's open doorway, one hand frozen over the wall's lightswitch as if caught in the middle of indecision.
"Are you ok?"
Was he ok? No, of course he wasn't: his best friend and work partner had disappeared into the night without a word, leaving him to watch over their son and adopted nephew. Weeks later, there was still no sign of the Parkers, and those left behind were still facing a life full of uncertain chaos. Six-year-old Petey frequently dissolved into wild hysterics, which could only be soothed with constant contact; Curt found himself struggling to figure out how to manage both the boy and everything else that needed immediate attention. Thankfully, Petey's older cousin was far more self-contained…
However, self-contained did not mean unaffected.
Curt lifted his head from the table, carefully wet his lips— dry, not cracked, but they still stung slightly —and tried to think of an answer. He always did his best not to lie to either of the boys, but he did shelter them from harsher truths when he could.
"I'm not feeling too well. Bit of a headache, maybe a touch of a bug," he offered vaguely, trying his best not to grimace as his own voice grated on his ears. Forcing himself to sit up properly, he tried to look concerned as he asked: "It's the middle of the night: why are you up?"
The words sounded waspish and he immediately wanted to apologize, but the boy didn't seem to notice.
"Bad dreams," was all Pete said in reply and Curt couldn't suppress a sigh. Yes, of course, it would be bad dreams. Between the three of them, there had already been enough suffering for a lifetime's worth of bad dreams.
Well, he had already been up for the past several hours soothing one boy back to sleep, what was another couple more with the other?
"Go back to bed," Curt rasped, then cleared his throat painfully and tried again. "Go back to bed, Pete, and I'll be there in a minute."
The boy nodded wordlessly and disappeared back into the darkness.
Curt scrubbed his only hand over his rubbery face, grimaced at the abrasive feeling of stubble already creeping in, and dug down deep to find some measure of strength to will himself to his feet. Stress at the office, exhaustion at home: he couldn't give the boys anything less than what they needed, he was all they had left, but when would he find the time to finish his work? When would he find the time to sleep?!
I'll manage… somehow...
Dragging himself up, Curt wryly reflected that at least it was easier to do so when he had nodded off at the small dining room table. He didn't think he'd be able to do the same if it had been the sofa instead.
Navigating his way in the near-dark to Pete's room, Curt slipped inside and eased the door mostly closed behind himself. Closed doors were no longer a thing in this house: he had gotten into the habit of leaving them open, just a little, just enough to hear for small voices.
With a soft groan, Curt settled himself on the floor next to the teen's bed and rested his head back against the mattress. He wanted to close his eyes; he didn't dare do so. The lump beneath the blankets shifted.
To his surprise, Pete reached down, holding out his fist, fingers curled beneath his downward facing palm, where Curt could see it easily. What was this, then? Confused, he reached out, carefully cupping his hand beneath Pete's and was rewarded to feel something drop into his open palm.
Two white tablets seemed to almost shine in the night.

Peter slowly crawled through the window of Eddie Brock's apartment and was relieved to find that Dr. Connors was already there with the reporter. Good — having everyone in one place would make what he had to tell them a whole lot easier.
"Peter, excellent timing," Curt was saying as he closed the window behind himself. "We just ordered lunch."
Clearing his throat with an awkward cough, Peter took a deep breath, and croaked out:
"Ah."
Yup, that got everyone's attention. Four sets of eyes peered at him as human heads turned his way and symbiote heads emerged from their hosts to get a better look at him.
"Peter?" Curt asked hesitantly, his forehead wrinkling with faint concern.
He pulled off his mask and repeated himself more clearly:
"Ah."
It sounded just as rough as before. He swallowed to try and ease the pain, only to regret it. His throat felt scratched raw, as if something had been carving up the tender inner lining. The rest of him felt only marginally better: achy, mostly tired.
"Oh dear…"
[What is wrong with Parker?] Val asked, her wedge-shaped head swiveling back and forth as she alternated between giving him a suspicious look and glancing down at her host, who was looking more worried by the minute.
"He's fine," Eddie waved dismissively, turning back to whatever he was doing on his laptop. "He's just got a frog in his throat. I'm surprised he's lasted this long, considering how wet this spring has been—"
[A frog? Caught in his throat? Can you not swallow it, Peter? Are you choking? Is he choking?!] Venom's voice rose in concern with each insistent question until he unleashed a series of inky tentacles, seeking to "helpfully" dislodge the metaphorical item in question. [Do not worry, I have got this—]
"No!"
Peter was relieved to see that both hosts reacted with the same immediate concern that he felt, as Venom lifted him into the air, already turning him over to do... well, he wasn't exactly sure what Venom was about to do, but he's glad not to find out.
"Venom, put him down, he's not choking!" Curt insisted. "It's a saying: Eddie only meant he can't talk."
"Ah!" Peter agreed as Venom gently set him back down in an upright position.
[What does a frog have to do with losing one's voice?] Venom rumbled, sounding confused and slightly annoyed.
"I don't know," Eddie snapped back. "It's just something people say, bud… it's not literal, you always take things too literal…"
[And you should not tell lies, Brock] Val criticised with a disapproving sniff. [Parker would never eat a frog]
"I didn't lie, it's a saying—" Eddie muttered indignantly, but gave up with a shake of his head.
[Certainly not whole] Venom agreed with a nod towards Val before turning back to him. [That is not good for you. You must remember to chew your food, Peter]
"Ah." Peter squeaked in protest.
[Who even eats frogs? They are too rubbery to enjoy eating them] Val continued. She sounded like she was gearing up to say more, but Venom interrupted before she could warm to the topic.
[We did! Do you remember, Eddie?] Venom gave a gusty sigh and his head swooped gracefully through the air as he curved back toward his host, coming to rest on top of Eddie's shoulder as he leaned in close. [We ate frog legs and snails in Paris, and spent a long weekend enjoying ourselves]
Peter widened his eyes at Eddie in silent surprise: he didn't know they had been to France!
"Uh, yeah. No. It was Paris, Texas. You ate questionable-looking frog kabobs from a gas station, and then a bunch of random snails off the pool's patio railing, and then we wasted an entire weekend while I hallucinated and you fought off some sort of deadly brain virus thing that you gave me from eating them." Eddie corrected, pushing Venom away with a light shove. "Woke up to find out he took apart an entire dumpster and built a bed-fort with it in the motel room. A dumpster! Who does that?"
[A shame neither of you ever recovered] Val offered her snarky condolences in a deadpan tone.
"Val," Curt warned lightly, then purposefully took charge of the conversation: "Please get the pen light out of the first aid kit for me. Peter, come here."
Happy to do so, Peter draped his mask over the back of the sofa and drew closer, leaning down a little so Curt could give him a good look over while Val fetched the light for him.
"Say 'ahh'," Curt ordered.
"Ah—" Peter managed before dissolving into a coughing fit. He turned away, muffling the sound into the crook of his suit's elbow before he could accidentally spray his germs in Curt's direction. As it was, Val scrunched up her snout in disgust at his display; Curt gave him a look that was much more sympathetic.
A second try had Curt make a soft humming noise that sounded thoughtful as he shined the light into the back of Peter's throat.
[No frog, only spots] Val noted. Did she sound disappointed, or was that just his imagination?
"White spots and red striations: you've got a sore throat," Curt confirmed, putting away the pen light. "But you already knew that."
"Ah." Peter agreed. A confirmation was good, but what was he supposed to do about it? It wasn't like he could just stop being Spider-Man until he fully recovered... no matter how much he wanted to just take a break...
"Try to rest your voice—"
"As if he could," Eddie butted in, laughing at his own joke.
"—as much as you can," Curt continued, ignoring Eddie. "Drink hot tea. Gargle with warm salt water to flush it out."
[Flush out the frog?] Venom asked, floating closer again to give him a curious look.
[There was no frog] Val reminded him sharply.
[Perhaps you were just not looking deep enough] Venom suggested, but backed away quickly when Val snarled at him, flashing her teeth in his direction.
"Ginger tea for Peter, I think" Curt mentioned idly. "It'll clear the soreness in no time."
[And the frog?]
"Mhmm, yes, that too," Curt promised with a chuckle.

If you want to spell a character's name then yeah, sure! Just tell me what the name is in the same place you'd put a word!
