Detective Celia Ortega. 31. Mother and big sister first, pack leader second, and public servant third.

Siblings Celia has four siblings—an older brother who used to be the leader of their pack before he went to jail, and three younger siblings ranging from their late twenties to late teens. They can be any age within that bracket as well as any gender. They all share the same mother, but can have a different last name if they don’t share the same father.

Childhood Friends Celia has lived in Faerune her entire life. She has always socialised with people from all walks of life, but she definitely had a chip on her shoulder and an attitude problem to match when she was younger that got her into the occasional spot of trouble—including, ironically, with law enforcement. As a teenager, her friendship circle consisted mainly of either fellow poor kids from broken homes, or the popular and significantly more well-off kids that were friends with her high school boyfriend (although she never really felt like she fit in with them).

Adulthood Friends Since most of Celia’s time is spent either at work or with her son, most of the friends that she’s made as an adult have come from meeting people through her job or through Felipe.

Regular Rascals As a former troublemaker, Celia understands that not everyone who does bad things are bad people, and that a lot of the time, what they need more than anything is a support system—someone to both believe in them and hold them accountable. She tries to be that person for as many people as possible, but she won’t force her help or guidance on someone who doesn’t want to take it. She knows a lost cause when she sees one.

Former Dates Celia has not been in a serious relationship since high school, but every now and then she manages to go on a date that never really pans out. It could be for a number of reasons, but for her it tends to be the fact that she has a demanding job while also being a single mother and does not have much time beyond that for a relationship.

Friends with Benefits Just because Celia doesn’t have time for a relationship doesn’t mean she doesn’t have time for sex. She’s mostly straight, but there have been exceptions to that rule over the years.

“Felipe! Slow down, you’re going to pull my arm off—“ Of course, her sweet but stubborn son did not heed her warning, sending them both barrelling down the street at breakneck speed. It wasn’t that he was a troublemaker, but he could get overly excited when he saw someone he recognised out in public. For years, Celia swore he had inherited his social nature from his father, because he certainly had not gotten it from her.

The pair came to a screeching halt in front of their friend, the tinier of the two Ortegas bouncing up and down on the heels of his feet, a bright smile on his face. “Cosmo!” he greeted, after which Celia too broke out into a friendly, slightly apologetic smile. “Hey, kid. It’s been awhile. How are you doing?”

“Hello,” Celia greeted cordially but firmly, taking a seat opposite the younger woman—one of many members of other packs that the detective had sought out and spoken to in the past days. She had other cases, some that technically took priority over this, but not to her. She may not have accepted Lucas’s offer to join his pack way back when, but an attack on one of them still felt like an attack on one of her own, and that made this personal. Which made her angry, and very, very motivated.

She observed the person in front of her for a few seconds before offering a smile. “My name is Celia. Got a minute to chat?” It was posed as a question, but the manner in which she quietly but pointedly placed her badge on the table signified that it was a rhetorical one.

It had been awhile since Celia had been to the Lucas Walker pack house, but as she walked the familiar path from the street to the front door, she couldn’t help but notice the warm, inviting feeling it invoked for her. It wasn’t so much from the building itself, but rather from the years and years that she had spent knowing Lucas, confiding in Lucas, and relying on him as a source of comfort and strength. Trust was earned, and while not many had earned hers, he definitely had—many times over.

She hoped he knew that he could count her her, too. Especially now, given who was currently in the hospital after being beaten within an inch of her life. “Hey,” she greeted as soon as the door opened, concern lining her face. “I heard about Abby. I came as soon as I could.”

Ever since the earthquake, it had been all hands on deck at the police station. Officers were being rerouted from their usual beats to canvas for information. Detectives were balancing their regular case load with further investigations and interviews. Everyone was fielding inquiries from concerned citizens, delivering notifications to loved ones, and checking up with survivors as they came out of the hospital. People who didn’t work together normally were being paired up on a variety of assignments. Including Celia, which left her searching the station break room for...

“Moreno,” she greeted, sliding into the chair opposite the officer. They had been in the Academy together, but to say their career trajectories had diverged since then would be an understatement. “I’m looking for the report on your latest canvas. Do you have it?”

It had been a couple of days since her late night encounter with Natalie and the detective had not run into the younger werewolf again. As someone who knew how difficult it could be to turn your life around, Celia had half expected to see her back at the station right where she’d found her, and she wasn’t sure whether to be pleased or apprehensive that this was not the case. In the end, some combination of growing concern and an inexplicable sense of responsibility drove her to make the trip to the garage where Nat worked to check on her.

“Natalie?” she called out, stepping out of her off-duty vehicle and surveying the surroundings. “It’s Detective Ortega. Are you here?”

lucas-walker​:

It means a lot that there’s someone who gets it. I know I’m usually the one who is giving out advice. So it’s nice to be the one on the receiving end for a change. He looked out into the wilds a low howl coming from the distance and Lucas lifted his head as he listened to it. He had to return to his pack. The night was reaching its peak. It was best to be together then. 

I have to go. Come by the house soon? He stepped up to her nudging her gently before lowering his nose to the ground to pick up the scent of his pack. Once he had it he gave Celia one more glance before galloping off into the distance.

Celia’s ears perked up at the sound of the howl coming from a distance, and a quick glance toward the night sky confirmed to her that it was, indeed, time to reconvene with their respective packs. Nudging him back, she remained seated while watching the other alpha, nodding at him when he looked at her one last time before leaping off into the forest.

I will. Take care of yourself, Lucas.

“Younger? Celia I’m almost Forty. I doubt any one who you would consider younger is going to look twice in my direction. Especially if you’re sat here.” Daivi laughed before taking a sip of her drink. “Plus I can’t remember how to flirt so there’s a real possibility that an attractive guy could walk up and I’ll just mom him into leaving.”

“Nonsense, you’re incredibly beautiful and you don’t exude ‘don’t talk to me I’m a cop’ vibes like I do,” Celia replied lightheartedly, smiling and patting the badge that sat clipped to her belt for emphasis. “As for flirting, that’s easy. Just look the guy straight in the eyes and occasionally touch his arm when you’re laughing at something he’s saying. Men tend to interpret that as flirting. Even when it isn’t.”

“Well growing up too much would be boring” Moon-soo commented with a chuckle. “Well, I’m pretty sure I found my witch or she found me or we found each other. We’ve agreed to try the whole familiar-witch thing at least. Who knows how things will go.”

“Oh?” Celia replied, raising an eyebrow inquisitively. For as long as she’d known Moon-soo, she couldn’t quite tell if he was excited and maybe a little impatient to find his witch, or if he was dragging his feet about it. Maybe a little bit of both. “Who is this witch person and why have I never heard of them before?”

“You’d let me, a drunk punk, sleep on your couch?” Natalie was surprised at how the events had turned in her favor. As she loosened the cuffs, Nat grabbed her wrist to rub the burn away. “Felipe is a nice name. My sisters name is Natasha….Nash for short. Yeah Nat and Nash, two peas in a pod until I got broken. My sister is younger than me by a few minutes. We had a huge fight because she sweeps her emotions under the rug and I get hung up on mine. After the quake I….” Nat swallowed hard as she clenched her jaw. She didn’t want to talk about it. “She acts like it’s no big deal but it was to me.” In that moment Natalie wanted nothing more than a stiff drink to chase the nightmare out of her mind. “I don’t know if sleep is enough to shake off my problems.”

“Honestly, you’re not the first drunk punk I’ve let into my home, and I doubt you’ll be the last,” Celia replied simply, scribbling down some final words on her notepad before getting back up again and knocking on the door to the interrogation room. Wordlessly, she tore out the sheet in question and handed it to the officer who answered before turning back to Natalie and nodding in the direction of the now open door. “I know sleep isn’t enough to shake off your problems, but at the very least it’s enough to shake off your inebriation. Now come on, I’ll clock out and we’ll grab some food on the way home.”

“Twelve, practically a man.” Nat sniffed as she sipped her sleeve across her face. She was getting tired of the cuffs on her wrists. “I understand the wanting him to have a better life. What’s his name?” Nat groaned as she put her head down again. “Am I going to get out of here tonight?”

She was tired and she smelled like beer. “Not like I have anywhere to go home to though, suppose a cell would be my best option tonight..”

“His name is Felipe. Felipe Ortega.” Without the attitude and bravado to energise her, it was easy to see Natalie for who she was—someone who was sad, scared and alone, and didn’t have anyone else to turn to. Celia could remember vividly about ten years ago when that had been her. At first, she hadn’t been much better at accepting help herself, but it had gotten easier over time. Perhaps the same could be true for the woman in front of her.

“You can get out of here if you want to,” she confirmed, getting up and taking the keys to the cuffs out of her pocket. She hadn’t technically asked the officer if she could take them but it wasn’t her fault that they’d left them unsupervised. Walking around the table, Celia unlocked the cuffs before getting back in her seat. “And there’s a sofa you can crash on at my place. It’s not much, but it’s somewhere you can take a shower and sleep this off. We’ll deal with the rest in the morning.”

He looked up, nudging her back. I’m fine. Just got things on my mind. Jack was having a rough time. He had a kid he was trying to convince to let him help him. He had Nash he was worried about plus Nat out to try and kill him. He still had everything together but it was lonely at the top. He knew it was stupid. He had his family. He had his pack. He was just very aware that his ex wife was getting on with her life and he was stuck feeling like he couldn’t get past it.

Sometimes I wonder how my mom did it after my dad passed. You get all the day to day problems of a pack but sometimes you just need someone.  It was never like that with my ex wife and yet here I am missing the relationship like an idiot.

Celia listened, knowing the feeling that he was describing all too well herself. She had never chosen responsibility—for her siblings, for their pack, for the child she had carried to term and brought into the world without a partner—but it had been thrust upon her nonetheless and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She loved and appreciated everything and everyone that was a part of her life. But sometimes it was hard being the one who always had it together.

You’re not an idiot at all. I miss Felipe’s father every day and it’s been over a decade since he left. But... For what it’s worth, even though I’m not going to deny it’s been hard raising him by myself, I’ve never really felt alone. Because I had you.

Nudging him again, she continued. I know it’s not the same thing, but if you ever need someone, you can always come to me. I’ll be there.

“Make that two large cups of coffee and can you bring a side of the fudge sauce” he told the waitress after Celia had finished. “I am more than prepared for a sugar crash” Moon-soo smiled across at Celia after the waitress left to put the order in. “Because before the sugar crash there is that sweet sweet sugar high.”

Celia shook her head at him but nevertheless wore the same amused expression on her face. “You know, I know we’ve both grown up since high school, but sometimes it really doesn’t feel like we have,” she commented with a small smirk, before taking a deep breath and leaning back in her seat. “So. Anything new or exciting happening in your life? Because I have nothing to report on my end.”

“Yeah. I get that,” Anne admitted softly. “That’s the hardest part for me too. I mean, it’s my job to find the answers. So if I don’t have any for them … it feels like I failed my job.” She sighed, shaking her head. “But enough sadness. We should grab a drink and catch up properly. Do you have time right now?” She didn’t want to keep her friend if she was on duty or in the middle of something.

“Sure, let me just--” Celia shuffled some thing around to check the time on her watch, and upon seeing that she wasn’t in a rush, nodded in confirmation. “Yeah, I’ve got time for a drink. Birch Bar as usual? Lucky for us, it managed to go unscathed in the earthquake.” She gestured down the street, in the opposite direction of where the major clean up and repair works were taking place.

Lucas couldn’t help but laugh. Celia had a habit of making things into a competition and he knew if they kept running while he might have longer legs she’d be able to beat him in stamina. So he did the only thing he could logically do. He pounced on her. Rolling with her he eventually pinned her and nipped at her ears before letting her go. Lucas shook his head, his fur shaking. Being in wolf form on a full moon was always strange. As he could go from being himself to being purely wolf easily and without much warning. Mostly he kept part of himself but it was always a struggle. Especially when he had things playing on his mind. He sat himself down and looked up at the moon.

Celia was, by her very nature and her chosen profession, fairly alert—constantly watching her back and keeping a bead on her surroundings without really trying to. But under the soft light of the full moon, driven by sheer competitiveness and her baser and more primal instincts, she found herself so focused on how fast she could run that she completely missed Lucas coming straight at her. All she could hope for was that her siblings were too far behind to see him pinning her down or she’d never be able to live it down.

Once he let her go, Celia pushed herself to her feet and nipped at him playfully in return, before sitting down next to him and joining him in looking up at the moon. After about a minute, she turned to look at him and nudged him curiously. You okay?

“Is don’t be an asshole a reasonable deal breaker?” It seemed like such a low expectation. If it was just something casual she wasn’t sure what her deal breaker would be. “I guess a deal breaker would be someone who doesn’t respect women. Other than that right ow I’m open to anything.”

“It’s an entirely reasonable deal breaker, and yet still manages to be an impossibly high standard for most men to meet,” Celia quipped back with a playful smile, downing the rest of her drink and dropping a handful of bills onto the counter. It amounted to a ridiculously high tip, but that was a habit she’d gotten into from her own days in the service industry. “If you’re asking me, I’d go for someone a little younger. They have a higher stamina, and they’re more likely to have modern ideals.”

“So you are a bad cop.” Natalie smiled, “ok, I’ll bite. First off, I would be call myself a brat. A therapist might say I have daddy issues due to the constant abuse we suffered at his hands. I don’t trust easily. I want to take advantage of whatever kindness you are offering but my mind tells me not to trust. I can mask it, look and be friendly to a point, but my relationships snap crackle and pop in the blink of an eye. My own sister diesbt even like me right now. I drink too much, I’m effectively homeless right now. My business is in a constant state of decay……” nat three her hands up in surrender. The chains groaned and rattled as she moved to bury her face in her hands. She couldn’t hold it in anymore. The next time she looked up her eyes were full of tears. “You have a son; how old is he?” Nat smiled at the thought of that kind of perfect life. Love unconditional. “You got a dangerous job for having a kid at home, bet that’s hard.”

Celia listened. Quietly, patiently, and without interrupting the other, she took in everything that Natalie was saying while wearing the same neutral expression on her face until the other woman stopped talking and covered her face with her hands. By the time she glanced up again, the look on Celia’s face had softened somewhat, not necessarily to the point where it would be considered overtly nurturing or empathetic, but still conveying a certain level of acceptance in her eyes. Stern, but understanding.

“He’s twelve years old,” she replied, the barest hint of a smile on her lips. “And yes, it is hard. Being a single mother makes it even harder. But it’s worth it if it means I get to give my son a better life than the one I had.” Pushing her cup of coffee aside, the detective leaned forward in order to catch Natalie’s gaze directly. “I don’t trust easily either. And I don’t expect you to trust me, because trust isn’t given, it’s earned. That’s all I’m asking for here. A chance to earn your trust.”
