It has been brought to my attention that in a response to an anon I used a slur that I shouldnโt have.ย
It made me realize that I know very little about the existence of multiple derogatory slurs against many groups of people.ย
So, Iโve taken my first steps of educating myself on all the slurs that have been used against groups of people over the course of our human history.ย
If you have the time, please take the time to look through the list.ย
Looking through this list not only helped take the first steps to educating myself about slurs that have been/are still used against groups of people, but the list has also helped me find answers to questions that I didnโt know I was still stuck over.
It gave me answers to questions such as whether or not I should have felt offended when that one boy in middle school said something to me based on my last name and its closeness to a commonย โjokeโ that many people use towards those of my ethnicity.ย
Looking through that list of slurs gave me confirmation that, yes, I was right to feel uneasy and offended when he said that to me, because what he said was a slur.
However, looking through that list of slurs also helped me realize how uneducatedย I was and how little knowledge I had regarding their existence.ย
What I felt when that boy used a slur is nothing compared to what others feel when those slurs are thrown at them on a daily basis. I know that. It makes me feel more angerโan almost immeasurable amount of angerโtowards all the slurs listed.ย
I know now to never tolerate the use of them and to start to educate myself more on other slurs. I wonโt be a part of spreading hate towards groups of people who have already been subject to so many generations worth of hate.ย
