“That is good.” Kunikida took the list back. “I will be back tomorrow to pick you up. Get a good rest.”

He left the hospital to get ready for tomorrow.

~Tomorrow~

Kunikida had come to Kohaku’s room early along with Regulus who was curious about the boy. They stood by his bed and Regulus couldn’t help but started poking at the sleeping boy.

As soon Kunikida left the room. Kohaku laid his back on the bed again and closed his eyes. He was fast asleep and drifted into a dream. It was nothing similar to the nightmares he had before. It was a good dream; blank and peaceful one.

Then he felt something poking him and he immediately jolted, wake up and sit up within a fragment of a second. His hand already grabbed the boy’s wrist by impulse but he halted himself from making further moves. His eyes opened wide and confused the moment he saw the blonde young man standing beside Kunikida and he was about his age. Probably younger?

He let go of that boy’s wrist before looked back at Kunikida. “..What is he trying to do to me?”

Regulus glanced back at the gorilla who was holding onto a small bag of what he would assume was candy.

“Don’t worry about it, it is most likely a child going to trick or treating early. It is Halloween! The time to dress up, have fun and get free candy! I can’t decide whether to dress up as a lion or Naruto for tonight. What are you dressing up as? A penguin?”

“Yep! Since you are going as a T-Rex, I guess it would be better if I go as a lion. So did you choose to dress up as a T-Rex because you loved the T-Rex you saw at the amusement park or because you like that funny T-Rex videos I show you?”

Regulus glanced back at the gorilla and then back at Kohaku and laughed.

“Of course! I am not asking you to dress up here. Let’s go somewhere safer then, like the bathroom in the Armed Detective Agency office.”

The raven haired boy pondered a bit. “Mmm.. Maybe both. That one video you just showed me before really convinced me to get one costume for myself. I’m still feeling a bit regretful for not being able to wear penguin costume this year.”

Kohaku looked at Regulus with a frown. “In Armed Detective Agency? Wait, no, let’s go to other place to change. I think we might be in danger.” He sounded tense but he tried to calm down and keep walking. He silently deducting everything in his head. If the gorilla know where they worked, they will know everything about them. He doesn’t want any stranger to know who he is, what he do for living and definitely not about the place where he work daily. He could be an easy target if he exposed too much. 

He pulled Regulus by hand to go to the other open streets where they would find public restroom instead. “Oh there. Hurry.”

He did what he had to do. Because it was his duty to protect him? He still found it strange the specter was sent here with a duty to protect him after his father was murdered by one of them, even if it was because his father was suffering from an illness. He still didn’t understand it. However, what he knew for certain was Kohaku tried to protect him.

“But you do! Father taught me that the wounds would be infected if you don’t bandage it. Then you will be sick and suffering too.”

Kohaku looked at Regulus with a frown. “..Regulus.” He sighed softly. “Fine. Just do this and then we can get our rest.” Kohaku looked forward to the wide horizon, vast field of forest and villages nearby. “Be more wary of people after tonight, they might be looking for their dead relatives.”

That night, as Regulus resting, Kohaku observed the wound and watch as it slowly healed. As he was expected, normal human can’t really do much physical harm to him.

He went to touch left side of his waist, still wondering why he didn’t fully cured from Minerva’s final attack. It has been few years and it still make him wondering about it.

After Kunikida watched Percival leave, a nurse came in with a note that Kohaku would be released from the hospital to the agency tomorrow. That was such a short notice! There were still so many things he hadn’t even prepare yet. He was already making a list in his head of everything that needed to be done when his thoughts were interrupted by Kohaku’s question.

“Oh. Not long since I need to prepare for things for you tomorrow. But before, I leave…” Kunikida pulled out the list that Kohaku gave him. “Do you know the ingredients to this? We would need it to make more of your tranquillizers.”

Kohaku looked at the tranquilizers then nodded. He even remember the formulas for it as he was taught by Percival long time ago. “I remember the ingredients. I will give it to you when I done listing it.”

He looked around, a little bit confuse. Since Kunikida will leave, who else going to be around and watch him? He looked at his own body, checking if they did put any tracking chips on him. But then, he thinks that he have no reason to run away anymore so it will be better if he just stay here in room and wait for the next day to come.

He wanted to curl up in the bed so hard right now. He didn’t feel any pain but he is just very tired from everything that happened earlier. It didn’t take long for the boy to show some tense expression due to lack of energy.

Kohaku looked at the other while rising his brows. “Hm? You seems to have a some costumes already. How about you wear a lion costume this time?”

He had to answer Regulus despite feeling uneasy about being stalked. “Uhm.. Well.. I actually bought T-rex costume for tonight.It has funny tiny hands. But, Regulus, I’m not comfortable changing here.” 

The gorilla peeked down the streets where they were walking and Kohaku could feel the tense glare even though he didnt make any effort to turn and look around. For the first time he wondered if this is how it feel to have fear on ghouls!?

Luck had very little to do with what had just happened. He must have been pretty close to the origin of the explosion and yet here he was, standing and being quite friendly. That along seemed to suggest that he was new to the area. People tended to be so rude to him when he was out shopping with Elise! It was as though no one had any manners! “Well it’s the very least I can offer”, he was the one to have gotten him involved in this little mess, even if he wouldn’t tell him that, “Yes. I was having lunch. I know she won’t be all too happy with me”.

He looked a little downcast after admitting to such, his entire body seeming to grow smaller as he walked towards the cafe, “This way”. Spirits lifted almost at once though as he entered the cafe and saw Elise off towards the back, happily eating away at her slice of cake, only for her to glare in their direction. “There you are!” “Elise-Chan! There was a small matter I had to look into - ah this is a new friend. I said he could join us for lunch” “…long as you don’t touch my cake”

“Ah - sorry about her, Kohaku…she can be a little greedy when it comes to her sweets…” “Kohaku? That’s a pretty name”, she glanced up from her food before smiling as she pushed the slice towards him, “You can have a bit if you like - but none for Rintaro”

Kohaku didn’t seem to show any concern expression towards the man but he wondered why he looks slouching all the time. Maybe a cup of coffee will do the work for this man but he was pretty sure coffee has different effect on people; based on his recent readings. 

The younger man looked into his direction and he saw the little girl. He felt guilty to take some from her plate so he refused it politely with a slight smile. “Thank you. Elise is a pretty name too. It’s alright. I will order mine.” He called the waiter to order one for himself before focusing on both of them. “You called him Rintarou?” He looked at the older man with a curious expression. 

“Do you guys often call each other with names? It’s alright if you don’t want to answer that.” He wondered if they are both are actually related by blood but at the same time he knew their relation was none of his business..

Regulus didn’t step down as he continued fighting the men who was trying to kill him now. However, he felt something ominous behind him and the men seemed to hesistate. He didn’t care or question what was behind him as he stabbed another one of the men nearby. Then, he felt a spear flew nearby him and heard a grunt behind him. He didn’t have time to check what happen when he quickly turn to defend himself from the man when Kohaku’s scream benumble the thieves and he attacked all of them, pushing them off of the cliff. Regulus stood there, shock before realizing what had happen. He ran towards the cliff and watched as the men fall into the rivers to their deaths. He stared at the scene for a few minutes before turning back to Kohaku. He saw that he was bleeding, most likely from the spear wound.

“You are bleeding!” Not having any bandanges with him, he start using his dirty clothes to stop Kohaku’s bleeding. “Why did you help me?”

Why did the specter help him?….

Kohaku was feeling irritated knowing that he could do better of getting rid that pesky weak thieves but he was feeling trapped with Regulus here. He couldn’t do more, as he was planning to toned it down so it won’t ruin his plan.

“..I did what I have to do. If I let them alive, more will come to you and then they will come for me.”

Kohaku looked at the boy and frowned slightly. “I really don’t need bandages..”

Reg : Thats probably our neighbour.

Kohaku : Reg, I think I saw strange lights outside.

Reg : Oh, probably car passing by.

Kohaku : Someone just touched me!!

Reg : Hmm, its very windy here.

Kohaku : *got stabbed by a ghost*

Reg : oh man, your fever seems to be worsen..

A taxi! Kohaku was right. They should have done that. Why didn’t he think of that earlier? However, it didn’t matter as a cab came up and they got in. Regulus was sure they were going to be late no matter what and Kunikida was going to be angry.

~Three hours later~

He was right. They came to the location and the client was angry at them. They got yelled at and then after they got yelled at Kunikida as well.

“Why were you two late to the client’s meeting?!” Kunikida demanded.

“Because we got lost…” This was all his fault. “It is all my fault. I got distracted and went to Disneyland and Kohaku followed me there.”

“What?!”

Kunikida couldn’t believe it! How could these two be so irresponsible?!

Kohaku doesn’t seem to be feeling very guilty about their mistake. He was actually quite happy that he had quite an adventure today.  “...Everything was settled. We are still in good terms with the clients. We’ve also got ourselves information and important documents. Can we just go home..?” He replied even though he looked like he is preoccupied by his own happy thoughts. Kunikida’s lecture definitely flew passed through his mind.

  Kunikida remained silent, listening to Percival and Kohaku’s conversation. So, everything was his plan then? All of this was for Kohaku to lead a more free and better life and now the agency had another of looking after him. However, if this was a chance for the boy to lead a better life and not kill anymore, it was a good chance. After he Percivel finished talking to Kohaku, he turned and gave him some small tubes.

“I see…” He wasn’t stupid enough to use these but he had a feeling Dazai might if he had any foolish ideas about suicide. He will just have to keep this away from Dazai. However, surely there must be more of these? He doubted Percival would just give him a few tranquilizers without telling him how to make more unless… he glanced over to Kohaku. Would Kohaku know the ingredients and how to make it? He would have to ask him later.

Kunikida sighed. Well, it wasn’t like they had much of a choice. There were little options and this was apparently the best one. “It is fine. But…” He was concern about what he meant by if he was taken away or dead. While he was no criminal, he was still a criminal in the Italian government’ eyes and he did not know what they will do to him. There wasn’t anything he could do for him. “Lets hope they are lenient in your punishment and that we would be able to meet again.

Kunikida quietly watched as Percival left the room with the other officials.

After that moment, Kohaku sat back on his bed and noticed he had his wrist attached with a tracker. Do they trust them that much that he wasn’t even behind the bars after killing people? There must be someone who was behind his set up. Was it a friend of his? His eyes looked back at the door when a nurse came in to give a note to release Kohaku out of the hospital tomorrow.

Tomorrow.. What’s going to happen after he is released by the hospital?? 

Kunikida. is he going to stay for a while?

“..For how long are you going to accompany me? Are you not going to sleep as well?”

Regulus was surprise that Kohaku could still remember some things even if it was blurry when he was five years old. For him, it was different since he had always had a good memory.

“Well, now you can reexperience everything fun again.”

While they were exploring and looking around the souvenir shop, he caught Kohaku staring at the penguin plush for a very long time. Did he want it or something? It look cute but it wasn’t as cute as the lion plush that was beside it. He was about to ask Kohaku when he suddenly shouted out their client.

“Our client!” Kohaku was right! He had completely forgot about them! “Kohaku, we need to go now!” He didn’t even let Kohaku reply as he grab his hand and ran out the store. They kept running through the crowds of people until they were outside Disney. They still need to figure out how to get to the client’s place!

If it wasn’t because being pressured due to last minute action, the latest idea won’t pop in his mind. Kohaku pulled his phone from his pocket and searched for the client’s address. “...Ugh.. This is stupid. We could’ve just take a cab and go to the client’s place.” Nearby driver arrived as soon Kohaku booked the cab from his phone.

*Oh - no no it’s not your fault. I’m really just glad that you are alright! This place can feel like such a gamable to staying alive I swear”. Now that she was beginning to calm down, her voice grew more steady and her body finally stopped shaking. It was pretty obvious that Kohaku meant her no harm but she was still taken back when he offered to speak with her. To see how he might be able to help her. It would be rather nice to just be able to get this weight off her chest. “Well, he’s not really lost erm - yeah let’s go someplace a little less busy. The cafe is perfect”. This was going to be a long story but if he could help her then hopefully it’d be worth it. She gazed around at the gathering crowds, feeling her skin begin to prick with the cold ice that lurked under her skin. If she grew too nervous she may even accidentally hurt someone.  “Do you know where I could go for some…not so common help?”

“Agreeable.”

It is pretty challenging to stay alive here. And he wondered why people even work and live here..? Yokohama is one weird city that he never fully understand. He took a lot of time studying and reading books about this place yet, so many questions left unanswered. He shrugged off his thoughts and focus on her instead.

“?” He can feel temperature dropped drastically near him and he was looking around and just to notice the frigid cold air surrounding the girl. Was the crowd making her uncomfortable..? “Follow me, please.”  Kohaku turned around and walk away, trying to lead her away from the crowd and to the nearby cafe which is quieter. It had less people since not many of the shops would open until midnight.

Does the crowd making her uncomfortable..? He waited for the the temperature to return normal after they settled at one of tables in the corner. Kohaku reached into his pocket and showed her his ID when she asked something. 

“I’m not sure of which kind of help you are seeking but ..I’m working for Armed Detective Agency. Our duty is to solve cases beyond law enforcement capabilities. Perhaps this would convince you. Or do you have something else in mind?” He spoke in a calm manner.

Oh! Was that another name that had almost slipped loose? He’d tuck away that information for later. “Kohaku Otomugi. Well it’s a pleasure to meet you. I am so glad that you managed to walk away from this…”. He shook his head a little, almost looking displeased about the bomb in question. Least the target itself seemed to have been taken out since he was receiving no reports to suggest otherwise, “Let’s have the noisy police deal with this issue now”, he shook his head, still gently guiding Kohaku through the gathering crowds, “Perhaps I can teach you a little about the city over a bite to eat? It must have been rather tiresome to patch yourself back together like you did”. Was that all there was to his ability? It would be a rather useful tool to be added to his armoury.

“I may have left my daughter at a nearby cafe. I insist that you join us for a small bite or two. As thanks for defending the city and as a welcome”. He was working here? Where? Did he already work for the ADA? Surely his spies would have found such information out if he’d been there for longer than a week or two. 

Kohaku just about done patting away the small debris from his clothes and brushed off the remain on his skin lightly. He didn’t want to look grubby in the public. “Oh.. I’m just lucky enough to recover back very quickly..” He replied the man with a quiet smile when he said he was glad that he managed to walk away from the incident. He is somehow used to it.

On the third year of experiments, he was on the last trial of ultimate annihilation. He struggled with 12 other subjects to survive the trial, the final explosion would be the final trial.And after that, he was left alone. Survived; yet in pain. The recovery rate was very slow at first, the agony when he wanted to die but the body won’t let him. He vaguely remembered that was the moment when he baffled the researcher. That was the crucial point of which they decided the project should advance towards the next phase. The project later was known as Peryton Project.

Noisy police, huh? 

Wait-.He was a bit surprised to hear that he have a daughter and he left her at the cafe?  

 Kohaku looked at the Police then back at the man with a nod and a light smile “Really? With your daughter? ..That would be wonderful. You are too kind, Mister.. Were you enjoying your time at the cafe before this thing happened?” 

Since he is not working that day, wouldn’t be a problem to meet new people. 

When they arrived at the cafe, Kohaku sighted a blonde haired young girl in the distance. Is that his daughter? His eyes blinked few times. Her daughter seems to dressed like some kind of trendy lollita. The pair seems to invoke so many questions but he kept it to himself for the time being.

Kunikida was silent as he let the words sink in for Kohaku to fully understand his situation. He could see that Kohaku was pondering over his words and wondered what he was thinking. Would he agreed to all of this or would he be against this? Kunikida was about to say something to Kohaku when Percivel spoke up. When did he came back?

“Sure, if you want.”

Percivel sat down beside the bed and reach out his hand to pat his head gently. Kohaku seems to be responding again. He looked at the hand whose patting him with curiosity. He bent down to whisper some words to the boy. “...I planned for everything. I want this to happen and I opened the path for you to be free. So, use this chance to do good for people and maybe make some good or fun memories. Also, listened to Kunikida, be a good boy, okay? He will take care of you.” He ruffled the boy’s hair before pulling away and approached Kunikida. He looked a bit worried over himself but big part him also felt relieved that he know Kohaku would be handled by them.

 He reached into his pocket and give Kunikida a small tubes containing clear colored fluid. “His ability to constantly regenerate new cells aggressively bring him pain. This? I invented it myself. It ultimately numbed his entire pain. Normal tranquilizer even in big dose has little effect. But this one is what suits him the most. But don’t use this on yourself, you probably coma for 7 days at minimum dose if you got this inside your body.”

He looked down before he looked up back at Kunikida. “..And oh, thanks- And sorry I had to pass him to you. To be honest I don’t know my fate after I come in for interrogation. If i’m dead or taken away, and there’s no news from me, don’t look for me. Okay? And, uhm..” The red haired might be joking but after he paused, he looked a bit sad. But, his expression returns bright as usual, as he was already feeling successful planning for Kohaku’s freedom.

“If I’m alive, let’s meet again soon.” Percivel smiled before turned around and he got escorted out of the hospital together with the rest of officials and also, Andrei. 

Kohaku watches as the man walked away and he got up from the bed, walked towards the window, seeing the black cars drove away.
