Ty nodded, fighting the constriction of encroaching panic in his chest. Over the last few years, basically every person in power Ty had ever trusted had turned out to be a horrible person who’d been trying to kill him. He wasn’t about to take what they had to anyone until they were damn sure he and Zane would both come out the other end unscathed. He was beginning to realize that he’d never been out there on the wire without a backup. He’d always trusted Burns to do whatever was in his power to save him, and now, without that safety net, the world felt a lot bigger.

Nick watched him for a few seconds, still covering half his face with one hand. Ty looked absolutely miserable. He might have seemed like he was handling the rejections well, but Nick could see underneath the mask just like he’d always been able to. “Condolences on getting shot down. Repeatedly.”
Ty didn’t even glare at him. He looked like a kicked puppy, and it made Nick want to slam his face into the wet bar. “You need to talk about it, babe?”
“Please. I’m going fucking insane trying not to give him … puppy eyes and beg him to rethink it.”
“Well, you can quit giving me puppy eyes. You’ve asked him three times?” Nick asked, hating himself for giving in and feeling sorry for Ty instead of feeling sorry for himself right now.
Ty nodded. “He said I hadn’t thought it through yet.”
“He’s probably right.”
“You’re supposed to be on my side, here,” Ty grunted.
“I’m on the side of the righteous, babe; means I’m rarely on your side.”
Ty barked a laugh.

Nick glanced at Kelly, who was nodding. Digger was silent, but he finally huffed and leaned closer. “It was dumb luck you got sent back with that message, Rico, we all know that. But I guarandamntee you if it had been me, I’d have smoked the fucker too. So you take that fucking wreath of thorns off your head and come back to us. Only way we die out there is if you let us. And you sitting here mourning your soul ain’t going to stop a bullet to my head. Your knife? Your hands? Your aim? Those will.”
“My aim,” Nick started.
“Fuck that medicine shit,” Digger snarled. “You said it wasn’t important enough for us to track some down. You’ll be you when we need you. We know it.”

Way back in January I made a couple of Ty & Zane quote art posts on my sideblog ( @alwaysanotherstory ), I’ve been wanting to do more in that style ever since. This Digger rant / monologue suited the style nicely.
“Got any coffee?”
“I don’t drink coffee. I’ve got tea.”
Hagan shrugged, wrinkling his nose. “This city was founded on the concept of tossing tea into the harbor.”
“That is… no. It was not.”

Wyatt rolled his eyes. “I thought we came here for your eye candy.”
“We did.”
Sure we did. “If that’s the guy you came to see, why are you trying to set me up with him?”
“I met Ash a few weeks ago, just like I said,” Noah said quietly, leaning closer. “We hit it off, but he’s not my type and I’m not his. He told me he wanted me to meet the guy he worked for and I thought, ‘Hey, I’ll toss him Wyatt in return.’”
“Real stand-up of you.”
“He’s a sweet guy. Don’t let the gaslight bent throw you off.”
“The what?”
“Gaslight. It’s like steampunk without the steam. Or the punk. Victorian throwback, gothic without the emo?”
“Are you speaking English right now?”
Noah laughed.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“He’s quirky and he likes things like suspenders and top hats and riding crops. And I didn’t tell him you’d be coming to meet him so you can play it … however it is you academic types play it.”
“Noah. You are an academic type.”
Noah waved that off with another mischievous grin. “But I’m the awesome kind who tends to get laid a lot.”

“You’re fucking insane,” he gasped. He stroked his hand across Nick’s cheek to lighten the blow of the words. “What the hell turned you on this time?”
Nick reached for his neck, gripping it hard and pulling him down into another demanding kiss. He kept his hand on the back of Kelly’s head, refusing to let him sit up, refusing to let him break the press of their bodies. “Just you. Moonlight on your smile.”

Not until his cell phone began to trill demandingly. With a heavy sigh, he snapped it off his waistband and flipped it open. “Grady,” he answered curtly, his West Virginia drawl still pronounced after all the years he’d spent away from home.

Once they were out on the road, Ty reached over and slid his fingers through Zane’s tentatively. His thumb rubbed absently over the wedding ring Zane still wore, then he squeezed his hand and kept his eyes on the busy road, not mentioning the ring or all the complications their new partnership might entail. Ty took his eyes off the road long enough to look over at Zane and smile crookedly. “It should be easier to sleep tonight,” he said softly instead.

PERSONAL HEADCANONS » SAY UNCLE
The last time I watched Demolition Man, a 1990s dystopian action movie that is equal parts awful and amazing, I found myself pausing the movie after Edgar Friendly’s (Denis Leary) famous monologue rant. Which goes a little something like this:
You see, according to Cocteau’s plan… I’m the enemy. Because I like to think, I like to read. I’m into freedom of speech, the freedom of choice. I’m the kind of guy who likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder - “Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of BBQ ribs with the side order of gravy fries?” I want high cholesterol. I wanna eat bacon and butter and BUCKETS of cheese, okay? I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I wanna run through the streets naked with green Jell-O all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal? I’ve SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It’s a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing “I’m an Oscar Meyer Wiener.” You live up top, you live Cocteau’s way: what he wants, when he wants, how he wants. Your other choice: come down here… and maybe starve to death.
That rant, and the general familiarity I have with Denis Leary’s standup, the characters he’s played, and the shows he’s helped bring to life (like Rescue Me and Sirens) made me think, Wouldn’t it be nice if Nick O’Flaherty had grown up with an uncle or other relative like that?
I grew up with shitty family. That’s part of the reason I enjoy Nick’s character so much, because that unfortunate part of his past is something I identify with. That being said, I know first hand that just because there are some really rotten branches in someone’s family tree, hell even entirely rotten root structures in some cases, it doesn’t mean that the shitty nature spreads throughout the whole thing.
Even the shittiest of abusive people have their good days and even the most toxic of families can have those distant relatives who are like beacons of sanity and light in the very rare family gatherings.
So, my personal headcanon for Nick for this Cut & Run meme that doesn’t want to end, is that Nick had some kind of uncle or someone that took him to baseball games at Fenway once in a while. The kind of inappropriate influence who would share his beer with Nick at the game, or let his technically-too-young-to-drive nephew drive home from the game in the insane Boston traffic. The kind of uncle who told nothing but off-color jokes and taught Nick to pick up women. Someone who also encouraged him to figure out what Nick wanted to do with his life and go for it, regardless of what Nick’s dad wanted for him.
The kind of uncle who might have heard Nick parroting back the hurtful words Brian threw at Nick between punches–that Nick was stupid, or useless, or any other number of awful things abusers say to keep their victims hunched over and easy targets–and made it a point to correct Nick.
The kind of family member who maybe tried to intervene with Brian on Nick and the kids’s behalf, but couldn’t help enough. The kind of person who would lend Nick books on history and ciphers from his personal library and insist that Nick tell him everything he learned from the books the next time he saw him. Someone who could show Nick that he didn’t have to believe any of the shit Brian said to him and give him hope that he really could get away and make something of himself one day.

“We need to get somewhere safe. Unexpected,” Ty said. Cameron couldn’t see him, but he sounded worn and beaten.
“And soon. Your partner is bleeding,” Julian informed Zane without a hint of sympathy.
Zane finally looked over his shoulder back at Ty. “How serious?”
“Shut up, that’s not my blood,” Ty murmured. His voice sounded weak.
“Ty,” Zane said, his voice brooking no humorous pushover. Cameron heard leather squeak, and when he looked, he saw Zane’s hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white.
“What? It’s not my blood!”
“Let me see it,” Julian demanded, and a moment later there were sounds of a scuffle from the back seat.
“I am AB positive and this is distinctly type O blood!” Ty finally shouted at him. “Look at the little Os!”
“Jesus Christ, Grady, can you not take one fucking thing seriously?” Julian yelled back in utter frustration. Cameron wondered what it was about Ty that made Julian lose his composure so easily. If he weren’t so secure in their relationship, he might actually be jealous of it.
Cameron gasped as the SUV jerked over to the shoulder of the road and came to a sudden stop. Zane threw it into park and turned in his seat.
“Enough!” he shouted, grabbing Ty’s wrist when it flailed within reach. Cameron shrank back, leaning against the passenger-side door as Zane growled. “Grady, give me a clear answer, dammit!”
“I’m not bleeding!” Ty insisted, sounding a mixture of exasperated and hurt that Zane didn’t believe him. “Would you put the car back in drive before we’re strafed by CIA fighter jets or something?”
“I swear to fucking God,” Zane cursed under his breath as he let go, turned back around, and got the SUV moving again.

Zane turned and threw the dishrag at Ty’s head. They both laughed. “Go pack and we’ll head on.”
“I love it when you get all bossy,” Ty said with relish as he headed for the stairs.
He sauntered away. He was barefoot, had no shirt on, and his sweatpants were barely staying on his hips. How could he be so damn sexy and in such a good mood after almost getting eaten by a tiger and being in a tranquilizer-induced coma for a day? Zane couldn’t help himself; he called out, “Hey, Ty?”
“Yes, my darling?” Ty responded sarcastically from halfway up the staircase.
“I love you.”
Ty grinned and started up the steps again. “I like what Texas does to you, Zane.”

“Valid,” Nick said. “But the Feds and Interpol are bringing heat on the cartels all over the world. The Vega cartel has been quiet for a year; they’ve even pulled their operations in the northern cities. They cleared out of Boston two years ago. You really think they’re still after Ty and Zane when they have bigger problems now?”
“Yes. In fact, I know it.”
“You know it,” Nick said, deadpan. Liam nodded. “Through your super secret government contacts, I’m guessing. Isn’t that beard a little against NIA dress code?”
“Call me a master of disguise.” Liam quirked an eyebrow as he waited for Nick’s reply. After a few seconds, he waved his gun through the air and set it on the table with a metallic thud. “Oh, come on! You used to be so good at witty banter!”
“I also used to like you. Made the witty banter easier.”
Liam’s mask broke, and he looked genuinely surprised. He covered it quickly, though, retrieving the weapon. “Well. I suppose I don’t blame you.”

Ty reached impulsively and smoothed Zane’s hair back from his forehead. He stood, bending over him to press a kiss to his forehead. “We can still cut and run,” he whispered against the warm skin.
Swallowing hard, Zane shivered as hope shot through him. Hope for something other than the occasional flyby as they passed each other by while working. He had to try to ignore the twang he felt at the thought of leaving his hard-earned and well-loved job behind.
“Just say the word,” he said thickly.
Ty closed his eyes, his fingers tightening in Zane’s hair. He was proposing they both give up a job they loved, give up everything either of them knew. “We can open up a flower shop and sell black market orchids from the back,” he offered with a slight hitch in his voice.
Zane smiled at the flash of humor, though he knew it was Ty’s defense mechanism. “Just say the word,” he repeated quietly, though he knew Ty never would, and he wondered what he himself would do if it ever came to that.

Zane’s lips curled and he backed off, anger welling again. He turned away from Ty, cursing as he returned to his duffel.
“Zane.”
Even through the anger, that soft plea was enough to get Zane’s attention. He stopped his jerky motions and waited.
“Zane,” Ty repeated, and his hand came to rest on Zane’s back. “I love you. I trust you. I know you can do anything I can do, and you can do it just as good or better. But you’re hurt. Too hurt to come with us.”
Zane closed his eyes, surprised when they burned with the threat of tears. He turned his head, and he found Ty gazing at him, his hazel eyes gone dark with sorrow.
“Zane,” he whispered again, seeming to linger on the way the name sounded on his tongue. “I don’t want you to die because you’re stubborn.”
The tightening in Zane’s chest relaxed and he was able to take a breath without forcing it. “I love you, Tyler Grady,” he said. “And I’m too stubborn to let you die without me.”
