So I had written this post, promising something similar on Nordic types of magic. I’ll say this to begin with: even though it is my branch, it’s not something I’ve approached academically very often, so purists might catch me saying something not entirely correct, but whatevs.

The standard disclaimer still applies–this is my impression of these terms based on what I’ve read and seen, and aren’t meant to be concrete definitions.

SEIÐR (Proto-Indo-European *h₂seut-, “to move about, roil, seethe” + Proto-Germanic *seuþaną, “to seethe, boil”) is considered a Vanir magic, having been taught to the Æsir by the goddess Freyja. It is worked the majority of the time after utiseta, and involves communication with wights or other spirits. Seiðr is usually worked in an altered state of consciousness (ASC) and primarily utilized for divination, illusory magic, astral travel, or channelling. Practitioners may be called seið-worker, seiðkona (seiðwoman) or seiðmaðr (seiðman).

UTISETA (Old Norse, “sitting out”) is a preparatory practice for seið-workers. Traditionally, the practitioner goes out into a place of the dead and seats themselves upon a burial mound, with the object of task being to come into communion with the spirit that will be worked with during the practice of seiðr.

SPÁ (unknown origin, possibly Proto-Indo-European *spey-, “stick, staff”) is the power of prophesy or foresight, by ‘the determination of ørlög’. Ørlög is ‘the law of fate’ as determined by the Norns. Practitioners may be called spá-worker, spákona, or spámaðr. The term ‘spáwife’ is also commonly used. One who is highly skilled with spá or born with the innate ability may be called a völva, which is a traditionally feminine title, since such magics were seen as being in female domain.

VARÐLÖKKUR (Old Norse “warding songs”) are songs to be sung in preparation for seiðr or spá which are intended to help bring one into ASC. Unlike galdr, varðlökkur can be very melodic, and are today widely inspired by joik and kulning, two traditional singing styles amongst certain Nordic peoples.

GALDR (Proto-Indo-European *ghAl-, “to shout, to sing” + Proto-Germanic *galdrą, “incantation”) is viewed as a more Æsir brand of magic due to its seeming rigidity, but is similar to varðlökkur in the intent to induce ASC. Galdr is often called “runic chanting” and refers to the repetition of the sounds of the runes, i.e., if one meditates upon the rune fehu, then one may continuously gald the sound fe. Practitioners may be called galdra-worker, galdrakona, or galdramaðr.

story time

So the other evening me and my husband were out running errands. We didn’t think to turn our porch light on for when we got home. I had made a comment while walking up to our front door while my husband fiddled around with his keys. We sometimes forget to lock our front door so I went to try the door nob hoping that it was unlocked so my hubby wouldn’t have to fight with the keys in the dark. I barely even touch the door nob and I feel it twist and the door flings open. And the way it all happened it seemed like one of our friends was in the house and was playing a joke on us. So I make the comment to my husband that I think our friend Thomas is in the house. But when we get in the house there is no one. Lights are all off, I checked our house top to bottom and there was no one. A friend of mine had made a comment about how she saw a figure in my kids room a couple months back but because my kid hasn’t complained and I haven’t had any negative feelings in the house I didn’t worry to much about it. So I’m thinking either our house spirit was nice enough to open the door for us when our hands were full or whatever my friend saw did it. If it was trying to spook us it didn’t work. Me and my husband are use to things going bump in the night so to say. Just thought i’d share a weird experience I had with y’all.

For when you cant straighten out the thoughts in your head

You will need:

Blue (or whatever color you associate with calmness) pillar candle

Sage or palo santo

Fire safe dish

Water (preferably holy but tap can suffice)

Light the candle

Use the flame from the candle to light your sage/palo santo and place in/on fire safe dish

Inhale deeply

Exhale fully (Repeat 3 times)

Pray over water (whether holy or not, pray to whoever you see fit)

Dip your fingers into the water and splash the sage as you say (either vocally or mentally) the following phrase 7 times.

I am the calm in the storm

The storm does not control me

I control the storm.

Allow the candle to burn completely out on it’s own.

Repeat if necessary

Bead offerings for Norse Gods and Godesses

A fun little thing to note is the beads that Norse women would wear across their apron dresses, this makes beads a wonderful gift to your Norse god/godess. Frigg and Freyja I feel would especially love these, male gods may also appreciate it as they could give it to their wives and daughters. Or… even wear it themselves (*cough* Loki *cough cough*).

Another thing to note is that the colours of those beautiful glass beads where quite significant as each where made differently making them all different price ranges. I’m certainly one to believe that its the thought that counts, not the price, but if you want to get something more dazzling, go for the blue glass beads. Blue glass beads where the hardest to make and so they where the most expensive. Wealthy viking women would often show off their lovely collection of blue beads as this was a way of showing off wealth.

So there you have it, a more traditional way of giving gifts to the Norse gods.

Horrible day, venting.

So I'm probably going to delete this later but i needed to vent.

I've already cried my eyes out to my husband and my mom. But I got fired from my job today and it was the first time I've ever gotten fired. It was over stupid shit that wasnt brought to my attention until they were firing me.

Unfortunately this has been a really shitty past couple of weeks for me, I'm running out of my antidepressants and my anxiety medication, my kiddos birthday was Monday and i didn't have any presents for her, our income tax that we desperately need still hasn't come in. Luckily my husband got a new job today so that has taken a load off.

But it's all just been...horrible. And honestly now more than ever i am running to my Gods for guidance and the familiarity of their presence.

Tea drinkers read this!!!

If you buy pre-made herbal tea blends (usually have names like Bedtime, Calm, etc) check the ingredients. I just saw a Nighttime blend that had St. Johns Wort in it, which can be dangerous when mixed with some medications. Talk to you doctor what herbs you should avoid. (Especially when you want to ingest st. Johns wort or mugwort)

A simple hint to remember is just because its in a food store, doesn’t mean its safe.

St. John’s Wort reacts with a scary high amount of medications. Seriously. As a pharmacy tech, I’ve learned to notify a pharmacist EVERY TIME someone has some with them/some tea with it in there when they come to pick up their prescriptions. Even if the tea’s not for them or it’s not their own meds, we notify them just as a friendly head’s up.
