Alyssa Kimpel is a board certified music therapist who currently works with individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities. She has a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Central Florida, and a music therapy equivalency from Appalachian State University. She completed her music therapy internship at Giant Steps in Lisle, Illinois, and currently practices in Indiana. She has been a member of the UCF Knight Winds Ensemble, UCF Wind Ensemble, and UCF Symphony Orchestra on flute as well as piccolo. Throughout middle and high school, she was a member of the 2007, 2008, and 2010 All-State ensembles, where she had the opportunity to be one of the principal chairs in both 2008 and 2010. She was also a member of the All-County bands from 2006-2010. She was principal flute in 2006, 2008, and 2010, and principal piccolo in 2009. From 2003-2010, she earned straight superiors in District and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals in both Pennsylvania and Florida. Alyssa also had the chance to perform in the 2006 Florida Flute Association Junior Masterclass with Paige Long, and she performed in the 2010 Florida Flute Association 11th-12th Grade Masterclass with Dr. Nora-Lee Garcia. In 2007, she took part in the YouTube Brio Flute Competition sponsored by banddirector.com, and took 3rd place. She has also been the recipient of the Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence, and the UCF Gale Sperry Music Scholarship. In the summer of 2011, she was selected to perform and study in the Oberlin Conservatory of Music Summer Flute Institute with Michel Debost, and she performed with the UCF Knight Winds Ensemble at the 2011 National Flute Convention. In 2012, Alyssa played in UCF masterclasses with Jan Gippo, Catherine Ramirez, Deirdre Manning, Jean Ferrandis, and Richard Sherman. In 2013, she performed in a UCF masterclass with Carol Wincenc, and another UCF masterclass with Richard Sherman. In 2014, she was selected as a performer for the Florida Flute Association's Advanced Masterclass with Ian Clarke. In addition to working as a full time music therapist, Alyssa currently teaches privately and performs in the Chicagoland area.

So this crazy semester with 19 credit hours and 4 jobs has finally come to an end, and I got straight A's. I also got accepted to Appalachian State University to study my Master's Degree in Music Therapy beginning in Fall 2014! I have one more semester of my undergraduate career, then off to North Carolina! :)
Tomorrow, I begin my final fall semester of my undergraduate career. I also had my last fall ensemble audition today, and I will be principal flute in the UCF Wind Ensemble this semester! I will also be working as Woodwind Caption Head at Winter Park High School, private teaching at home, private teaching at a local music school, and working at an off-campus bookstore. And, for the first time since fall of my freshman year, I have less than 20 credit hours in a semester, with 19! I can't wait to see what this year brings! :)

I had an incredible time at the camp, and I got to take such an incredibly inspiring lesson with flutist Jonathan Snowden! For those of you that saw my earlier posts, I was planning to attend the National Wind and Percussion Workshop at the Shenandoah Conservatory. However, the camp was cancelled due to low enrollment, and I was instead offered a chance to attend the National Jazz Workshop, with the same faculty, at the same location. As a flute player, studying at a Jazz Workshop is an incredible opportunity, because classical flute players rarely get the opportunity to study this genre of music, let alone with such a high caliber of faculty. Also, as I plan to go into Music Therapy, the improvisatory skills one can learn from jazz will be incredibly helpful in the field. The camp still costs the same, and any donation or sharing is greatly appreciated! :)
