The LGBQT theory got me thinking about TV shows and gay and lesbian relationships. My first thought was Friends (Carol and Susan) and how they teased Ross about it all the time: “she didn't know how was I supposed to know.” but there really wasn't a problem with it (the show never really dug into that relationship much-tbh it was a side relationship). It is also brought up about Ben and the toys he plays with (the Barbie) and Ross tried to give him a dinosaur because he’s a boy and he is trying to take what his moms are doing away. Friends was in the 90s so they were just playing with but they are now more modern shows like “Modern Family” that deal with a Gay couple. I think TV shows are a huge part of the LGBQT theory because most of America does watch TV, so they are seeing how these couples are changing and they are putting a different light on it.

Defamiliarization (post 11)

Defamiliarization or ostranenie (остранение) is the artistic technique of presenting to audiences common things in an unfamiliar or strange way in order to enhance perception of the familiar.

This is Dictionary.com definition. Dr. Stacey said it was something like: the way you feel the world again and the way you once saw it.

A week before this semester started, my mom and I flew out to Missouri to see my grandpa who had been ill and in the hospital. When we went to my grandparents house that night I walked in and the smell hit me. I can't describe it, their house just sort of has that feel and smell to it. I have been going out there since I was a baby and its so familiar. I only go once a year and 100% of the time it is in the summer but it was weird because I went in the winter when it was -2 outside but it still smelled the same and it still felt familiar and I related that to defamiliarization because it wasn't presented in a unfamiliar way being there in the winter and everything but that minute I walked into the house it became familiar.

Friends: Plot (post 10)

Chapter 1 of Engagements of Literature gave an example of a tv show Law & Order. They used this example in plot It got me thinking of Friends and how the episode always starts in the coffee shop or Monica’s apartment. And how at the end there is always a resolution. In Friends, at the beginning of the episode they are always in one of two places: the Coffee Shop or Monica’s apartment. They are rarely anywhere else. There is always a “problem” to be resolved for example in “The One Where No One is Ready.” Ross is panicking, Joey and Chandler are pissing each other off, Phoebe has hummus on her dress, Rachel can’t decide what to wear and Monica is calling her ex boyfriend. This episode takes place in the apartment the whole episode except the last few seconds. There is a beginning, a middle and an end to this episode where everything is resolved.
