i really don't know if it's intentional, but every time we see the martian as a stand-in for john it has been when john is forced into a traditionally masculine role. issue 4, "i'm the same man i've always been." issue 7, waking up with stubble. issue 9, tyler's father + in the middle of a manic episode, fearing that he will always be seen as an outsider. issue 10, the manly gun-toting action hero. when john is the martian, it is always during these moments of forced masculinity. this to me reads very much as transfeminine subtext. like the idea of being comfortable in these "manly" roles is as alien to john as the little green thing from mars in his head.

#i think it's at least Super strong that john doesn't or can't fulfil traditional male roles and this is a source of tension from others#but this doesn't stop them from having the ability of radical empathy & using it to do good......#theyre doing their best & still being frozen out for being a distant person aaauuuu#(using they because i mean john+marty as well)#.martian manhunter
