My muse just did something stupid that almost got them killed. Yell at them.
"I know I don't have any experience with big families like yours, but if an outsiders perspective means anything, you have done such an amazing job with your sisters. They are smart, vibrant young women. You should be proud of them and of yourself." Becca reached for Ben's hand.
"Today is going to be great."
"I'd like that, exploring the city with you would be fun. I feel like I live at the hospital sometimes, I only come home to sleep." That was part of the reason she loved being with Ben, he gave her some adventure and normalcy.
"We can make it something we do when we have time off."
@amaranthblooms sent : "Hello, Your Grace, I am Leanora your new lady-in-waiting." When Leanora's mother had heard she had earned a place as the new princess' lady-in-waiting Madame de la Tour had been over the moon. Since the Mystery Princess had been found many courtiers were clamoring to get in to the future queen's good graces.
Smiling softly at the young woman, Ella couldn't quite resist the instinct to curtsy and bow her head. She needed to get better at remembering that she was no longer required to do so. She'd already earned quite strange looks from several of the older ladies this morning, and even seen a few of the lords whispering as she approached.
"It's very nice to meet you. Rosamund has told me about you. I hope we can be good friends too, like she and I seen to be on the path to being."
"Thank you. My mother made it for me." She explained with a wistful look. "Before she passed. I didn't know about it until my father gifted it to me when I turned 16. He said it was her last present, until I got married."
She'd never be able to describe the relief and comfort she felt being able to look down at her left hand and see her mother's ring on her finger, where it belonged. When she'd seen it on Lady Tremaine's a sort of fury had bubbled up in her. But she knew that her father's second wife had been trying to get a rise out of her. And Ella refused to stoop to her level. She couldn't deny being afraid that she'd never see it again, though. That her inheritance from her mother would be stolen from her too, like nearly everything else in her life had been. Her dear husband and brother, though, had made certain that it was relinquished before the Tremaines went into their exile.
It wouldn't have surprised her at all if Edward had gone to Kit himself to beg that he retrieve it, for her sake.
"This was also my mother's. Papa gave it to her when he proposed, and used it again when they wed. And Edward has our father's saved for when he marries."
Biting back a smile, Ella peeked up at Leanora from under her eyelashes. She'd seen her lady and her brother at the ball that was thrown to celebrate her and Kit's wedding. He'd certainly seemed more relaxed with her than he had with anyone else. Except maybe Rosamund.
"I believe you met him at the wedding? My brother?"
Leanora admired the ring quietly, it was genuinely a lovely ring, and the fact that it had been her mother's only made it all the more special.
When Ella mentioned her brother Leanora nodded.
"I did, he was very nice. Do you need some help getting into the dress?"
@amaranthblooms : Edward & Leanora
Edward had nearly danced his feet off, what with all the ladies and daughters of his new peers he'd been asked to accompany to the dance floor. He'd barely even had time to speak with his sister and brother-in-law.
As he tried to find a respite in a quite corner, he gasped slightly when he saw he wasn't alone. But just as quickly as it came, it was gone. A dignified smile replaced it as his mind raced for a moment to remember the name that went with this face. "Forgive me, Lady de la Tour. I hope I didn't startle you. Enjoying the ball?" The new duke asked.
Bowing politely despite the discomfort the honorific gave him, Edward gave a smile. One he hoped appeared more easy and unperturbed than he felt.
Leading her toward the dance floor, the new Duke had to bite back a sigh of relief when he saw that the folks he had spotted were nowhere to be seen. He'd likely have to go and seek sanctuary in the gardens before the night was over. Unless he could catch his sister in a free moment and steal a dance with her...
"Thank you." He whispered. "I'd much rather have a dance in comfortable silence, or amiable conversation, than listen to prattle and try to read between the lines for hidden intentions."
Curtsying to the Duke, Leonora listened to her dance partner explain, she couldn't fault him. Marie was the beauty, and while Leonora wasn't quite a spinster yet, she'd rather not have to play games.
"I would be happy to have an amiable conversation with you, do you like to dance?"
Lavinia's smile faded, the wound that was her parents' deaths still hurt. And for all her diplomacy and polite smiles, she couldn't hide the pain now.
"I didn't know if they would have told you..."
❛ i don't think they were going to. . . i think they were trying to spare me by not informing me? ❜ he noticed the way her smile fades. every instinct within him tells him to reach out and comfort her. he knows how inappropriate that would be now. how unwanted it would be. how much more awkward and difficult it would make all of this.
❛ but was hearing whispers of something that happened in your kingdom. i basically had to beg grimsby for actual information. i wish i had known earlier, i could have done something to try to help. ❜ but what, he wasn't sure.
Lavina should say that it was alright that there was nothing he could have done.
But that wasn't exactly true.
He could have married her, then none of this would have happened. But for diplomacy's sake she couldn't say that.
"I appreciate the sentiment, Your Highness."
@amaranthblooms : Edward & Leanora
This had to be a dream. It just had to be a sick, horrific nightmare. He'd wake up and everything would be fine. It had to be...
But he knew it wasn't. Kit's best friend, the former Captain and new Grand Duke, had delivered the news to Edward and Rosamund and her husband himself before they left the palace to return home. Rosamund had immediately burst into tears and had to be lead away by Marcel. Edward himself had frozen, unable to process what he'd been told. And then it got worse...
Hadn't he lost enough? His mother, his father, now Ella... How was that fair? How did he deserve life more than her?
Edward felt like he was going to be sick. The world was spinning out of control, and he was left without an anchor.
"They're... They're gone, Lea." He choked. "They never made it."
His hands dropping from his wife's face and falling limply into his lap, Edward wished for a hole to open in the earth and swallow him up. This wasn't what he'd wanted either. Not in a million years. Not in any way.
He didn't want to be king. He hadn't even wanted to be a Duke. Ella had adapted graciously and taken up her new role with poise. But he'd never really adjusted. He was a merchant through and through, even if by right he'd taken his father's minor title when he'd died. And if he'd have known that this would be his sister's fate, would he have tried so hard to reunite her with Kit?
Edward didn't know. He knew that the king had made her happy. And at least the period before her death had been one full of joy and freedom instead of despondency and suffering. And even his life had improved because of it, if only because it had given him Lea. But he knew his wife. And he knew that he couldn't ask this of her. It wasn't fair to him for the court to ask. But it wouldn't be fair if him to ask it of her either.
"I have no choice, Lea. There's no one else. If I don't do this, the kingdom will fall. There'll be more wars. Wars that your brother and your father would be made to fight in. We'll be taken over, and more innocent people will die..." He began in a soft tone of defeat. "But... I... I won't ask you to do this. I couldn't ask you to do anything against your will. I'd never expect you to do anything against your will... If it'll make life easier for you, if it'll make you happy... I'll set you free. I can talk to Lord Marois. I'm sure he could take care of it..."
Edward didn't want to divorce his wife. He loved her. And he would always love her. But he simply couldn't bear dragging Lea into a position she never wanted. He didn't want her to resent him down the line. As much as it would destroy him further to lose her, he'd put himself through that hell to ensure that she was living the life she wanted. The life that best suited her. Maybe it would be better this way, for her...
Lea was all he had left in this whole world, now that Ella was gone. And if his presence in her life put her at risk, walking away was his only option. He had to protect her.
Maybe Lady Tremaine had been right. Maybe he was cursed. Maybe he was the black cloud that smothered and snuffed out every life he cherished. And he couldn't let Lea become the next victim.
Leanora went white as a sheet, and felt like she was going to faint, did he really just suggest divorcing her?
"You're not leaving me." The words sound so authoritative, even though all Leonora can feel is numbness.
"I promised to love you until death do us part, I intend to keep that promise."
"One car crash that was nonfatal, two dumb teens breaking a bone doing something equally dumb, and an old married couple. The husband had a cardiovascular event, wife had a panic attack, but they're both okay." Gracie stifled a yawn and laid her head over Oliver's heart.
"And that was before noon."
"Mm, sounds like you had quite the eventful day." As Gracie laid her head against his chest, his arms wrap fully around her. He probably didn't smell the best, but she never seemed to mind. She always welcomed him home with open arms. A few good hours of sleep and he would feel almost good as new.
"Hm. I did, but today is my day off, and you're home, so it was worth it." Listening to the steady beating of his heart, Gracie smiled into the darkness.
"Do you work again tonight?"
Gracie groaned when the bed dipped, she was use to sleeping alone, between her own work as a paramedic and Oliver taking over night shifts it wasn't uncommon.
Opening one eye, the blonde smiled and reached out for her partner.
"'Morning, Handsome." Gracie mumbled, still half asleep, thank God for days off, if she had to get up and go to work right now Gracie would have been pissed.
"How was your shift?"
"Sorry," Oliver whispered apologetically when Gracie groaned. He had tried to keep quiet. He hated waking her up. Especially when it was so early in the morning. But as she reached for him, he pulled her close to him.
"Morning," he mumbled, his eyelids heavy. "It was fine. A couple small fires, but nothing major. How was your day?"
"One car crash that was nonfatal, two dumb teens breaking a bone doing something equally dumb, and an old married couple. The husband had a cardiovascular event, wife had a panic attack, but they're both okay." Gracie stifled a yawn and laid her head over Oliver's heart.

Working a 24 hour shift - especially in a job as dangerous as a firefighter's - was exhausted. Albeit, just as rewarding. For all the pain, and worry, and loss they went through, there was just as many wins. As well as a family you grew to be a part of.
It was nearly 5 AM when Oliver got home. He couldn't decide if he wanted a shower, some food, or a bed first. The bed won. He tried to be quite as he slipped beneath the sheets, not wanting to wake the other sleeping in their bed.
