Study Estimates ADHD Symptom Persistence into Adulthood
Sixty percent of children with ADHD in a recent study demonstrated persistence of symptoms into their mid-20’s, and 41 percent had both symptoms and impairment as young adults.

Doctors discuss relationships with patients through the new media culture. Stop being a gatekeeper of medical information and start curating the mass knowledge found on the web. Isn't it overwhelming to find health information on the web? Wouldn't it be nice to have the right information in a creative and engaging format? My curation project is about merging the gap between practitioner teaching and patients. Thus article explains my position perfectly.

Mr. Robbins explains “emotion is the driving force of life.” Finding our patients’ specific need during a doctor visit is a true skill. With time constraints and budget cuts, we shorten our time with patients. Having web apps available in the office and with access at home, we can provide the needed time to address the whole person. As anti-vaccers are on the rise, counteracting their reason to not vaccinate is difficult. Our nation has worked very hard to eradicate and slow the process of disease through vaccination. As a school nurse, I came across many children not immunized and this was concerning. I could not convince parents of the importance and it put many other immunocompromised children at risk. Continued education through medical apps can show history, have links to the CDC and keep our parents informed. Do you know anybody that is against vaccinations? How easy is it to change anti-vaccer’s minds?

Sometimes people are overwhelmed and more information may bring on a Migraine. Trying to get a patient to understand new concepts could cause a volcano of reactions. Medical apps can simplify teaching so patients aren't overwhelmed with paperwork and medical jargon. When was a time that you just couldn’t retain anymore information?
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

I have the same relationship with nursing education. Sometimes you have to move through the process with the patient to understand how they assimilate knowledge. Providing simple explanations with medical apps can fill in missing meanings. 3D heart diaphragms help a patient see how the blood moves through a weak Aortic Valve. It is not about reading to the patient, one must help them relate the information to their lives. .
Changing patient behavior must start with empathy and a team approach. This article enlightens readers on how lecturing may seem to patients. There is no specific conclusion other than, we need to be careful not to shame others. I disagree with this author. Patients want to be supported and understood. Taking the time to listen, teaching and giving treatment choices will empower patients. Using medical apps, a practitioner can work as a team and use simple videos or diagrams. What specific skill has worked that brought your patient understanding?
These are the reasons why you need to learn how to get your stress under control.
Providing easy and fun videos may help patients relate to teaching material. Tests tend to cause an extreme amount of stress for me. Learning how stress affects my body gives me more drive to decrease everyday stressors. This video is an easy way to learn about stress. One in every seven Americans was over the age of 65 in 2013, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The Department of Health and Human Services predicts this figure will nearly double by 2060, bringing the senior population to approximately 98.2 million.
How the healthcare industry cares for and engages these individuals will be critical as the nation moves to a more value-based care model that also holds everyone more accountable for positive results.

Engaging seniors with technology is a critical part of healthcare. As we live longer, we are faced with new media and medical trends. As a home health nurse, I encountered many older adults that needed the simplification of what medical apps could provide. The biggest challenge was getting them up to speed on technology.
What Do Patients Want From Patient Portals?

X-Plain simplifies evidence-based information with narration, text, graphics, and animations so that users of all health literacy levels are able to understand. Digital healthcare can support patient-provider communication, resulting in higher patient engagement and satisfaction.
Dr. Scher explains how including digital tools on patients’ portals is needed. A tool like MyChart is used by many doctors however there is no area for explaining results. This should be added to the portals if doctors want to curb what information is disseminated. This is how we can empower our patients and get them actively involved in medical decisions.

This article describes the general age of when women have children based off their education. Patient teaching must take into account lifestyle and current stressors. Typically the more educated a patient, the more apt they are to researching information and have a larger understanding of the world. In today’s times, this also means, they are working in a multi-media lifestyle. Patient developmental identification is essential to teaching and empowerment. Accommodation for multiple generations is a critical skill.
Learning how to relax patients is a skill that takes time. Without that skill, teaching can become difficult during highly charged moments. At hospital discharge there are many instructions given in written form and patients become overwhelmed. Having the ability to calm patients and their caregivers, along with simplified media instructions, can ease the transition home. I am sure that medical language is foreign to many people. Who knows what crepitus or nocturnal enuresis means? They are simply cracking joints and night bedwetting.
This article and video describes a new application that can make every patient a medical researcher. Imagine your patients coming in with the knowledge base to have an advanced discussions about disease and treatment options. Patient medical research in one application will change the way patient empowerment is supported. How many times do you or someone you know walk out of the doctors confused or wanting to know more?
Why healthcare organizations are not linking their systems together may be for many reasons. The pros outweigh the cons and practitioners should take heed. Millions will be saved and lives extended if we could all pull the same health records. This is how we will increase practitioner and patient education by streamlining the process and getting information to all practitioners.
Big data is changing healthcare by collecting masses of information and analyzing it. From using the Fitbit, to collect daily vitals, to analyzing test results for Individualized Healthcare Plans, medicine is changing. The possibility to use this data for patient empowerment is also underutilized. Patients are goal oriented and will use new technology to track diet, walking or exercises. When they go to the doctors, the information can be downloaded and care plans revised. I know a lot of people that got Fitbit for Christmas and love using it.
