Hello, hope you're having a good day. I wanted to tell you that your fic 87 is the reason I'm in therapy. No, I don't mean that as a joke, I mean that literally. While reading it, you made me realize a lot of things about myself I hadn't known were there, such as my acephobia I didn't know I had and still don't know the reason to. I realized I needed professional help dealing with these revelations so... Therapy it is. So thank you for that wake up call.

It feels silly saying it out loud like "Yeah I read this amazing fic, the writing was spectacular and the smut was fire but for some reason I was subbing more often than not, and the super fluffy ending left me feeling wrecked because wft is going on with me? So anyway I'm in therapy now" but that's exactly what happened :'D

Oh! That makes me so happy, seriously.

And I get it! I totally do get it! There were times while writing the story where I was like ugh why is Loki like this can’t I just make them fuck like they usually fuck. And I’m on the ace spectrum myself, I specifically wrote the story to explore that and play around with more “unusual” dynamics. (Initially I wanted Loki to be sex repulsed, but I kinda chickened out because I’m not sex repulsed either and I just wanted to write something that’s familiar to me, I guess. Something I can explain and write in a way that makes full sense to me.)

I never expected 87 to get so much traction, honestly I thought people wouldn’t even click on it because like, eh, ace character, no sex they’re used to reading, what’s in it for me then. Every time I get a comment saying they loved the ace part, felt represented or learned some new things about themselves one way or another I’m just overjoyed.

Writing the ending made me bawl too, btw. Just something about these two being so differently wired and still SO happy with each other. Ah well.

What are some of your favorite works that you feel like have inspired or shaped you as a writer?

Hmm. Difficult question, there are so many books I love that influenced me one way or another.

When I was a kid I loved Cornelia Funke’s work, Inkheart especially, I think it kicked off a lot of my love for storytelling. I’ve always been obsessed with Tolkien, too. Oh, His Dark Materials was BIG for me, I reread it at 18 or so and I just loved the vibes and worldbuilding so much, it inspired me a lot. I’d mention Neil Gaiman but he pisses me off so much (still, when I was younger reading his stuff, especially Stardust, really made me want to write stories myself).

More recently, Piranesi by Susanna Clarke kinda made me realize what kind of stories I’d like to write original fiction wise, what feelings I’d like to evoke. Also Howl’s Moving Castle (I have yet to read the rest of the series though). Edit: also The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. Read the series a two or three months ago and I think it’ll be one of my favorites for a long time.

I did start out writing fanfic (obviously) and my first stories were for Dracula and Phantom of the Opera, so I should mention those, too.

And there are a lot of fanfics that inspired and shaped me, too, but I’ve already rambled so much now. Lots of kinky fanfics. Somehow I don’t really read a lot of smut when it comes to like, published fiction. Funny how that works

I do think about that verse often, but so far I haven’t really felt the need to add to it. I kinda put a lot of work into making it a well rounded story (87 and Dereliktion were just improvisation in comparison lol, lots of holes in there for more stuff) and I like the way it ended up, in general. But I’ve thought about writing a little bit of a glimpse into their lives when they’re good and happy.

We’ll see if I ever get around to it! It’s not on top of my list because so many things to write and so little time. I hope that’s okay!

I genuinely do not understand this new, stupid accusation floating around the internet that using em dashes somehow makes your writing ‘unnatural’ or ‘not human.’

Like… are you kidding me? Em dashes have existed longer than half the people making that complaint have been alive. They’ve been in literature, essays, newspapers, journals, letters, and basically every written medium since punctuation became a thing humans fought about.

And I actually tried to ignore this whole topic for the longest time. I told myself, “Just let people be wrong on the internet. It’s not worth the energy.” But there comes a point where enough is enough, where the ignorance just gets so loud and so confidently stupid that you cannot stay silent anymore.

I’m truly, deeply sorry that I want to articulate my thoughts in a way that actually reflects how a human brain jumps, pivots, interrupts itself, and wanders. There is nothing ‘unnatural’ about that. That is literally how people think and speak.

And if you genuinely believe that em dashes are some proof of ‘inhuman writing,’ then my dear, you have never actually read a single book. Because ninety-nine percent of traditionally published authors use them. Classics. Fantasy authors. Romance authors. Literary authors. Modern authors. Old authors.

And sure, yes, obviously no one should use sixty em dashes in a 200-word paragraph. That looks like a punctuation stampede. But refusing to use them at all? Acting like they are some kind of forbidden, suspicious punctuation mark? Absolutely not.

I love em dashes. And I’m going to keep using them forever.

So stop accusing writers of “fakeness” because of punctuation. Stop pretending your personal punctuation preferences are some moral high ground. Stop acting like you’re the gatekeeper of real writing when you clearly haven’t read widely enough to know how real writing actually looks.

And honestly, EVEN if someone does misuse punctuation, even if they sprinkle em dashes everywhere or barely know how a comma works, it is still NOT your business. Take care of your own stuff instead of policing someone else’s creativity.

Mind your own work. Because other people’s punctuation choices are not (AND NEVER WILL BE) your job to fix.

Trying to write sex scenes is so aggravating because honestly describing sex is pretty boring. It's mostly just people putting bits of themselves on or inside other people's bits so you run into a lot of "they walked to another room" type problems where you can get caught up in just describing where everyone's limbs and shit are. What really makes smut interesting and hot, in my opinion at least, is sensory description but that's also hard because you'll be sitting there trying to find a new way to say "they were feeling sexual pleasure and it felt pretty good". Then you also have to figure out how to write dialogue that doesn't sound completely ridiculous and hackneyed. Really makes you want to just write "they boned down real good and it was totally hot trust me, it was definitely the kind of thing you'd want to jerk your shit to," and have done with it.

something i’ve kind of noticed with the surfacing of this whole “the best smut is a character study” kind of mindset is the pipeline to a borderline “when i write porn i do it intellectually unlike some of you SICKOS” type of mindset and i just wanted to remind you especially in our current political atmosphere that writing porn doesn’t have to be intellectual to have value. it can be just horny. thanks

Writing Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot stories is also fun – not everything needs to be elaborate or an emotionally heavy read (though be warned, Plot – or at least world-building – tends to sneak into my stories; smut in a vacuum is just hard to write). CNC is fun. I write DubCon, be it Fuck or Die, Arranged Marriage, Sexual Slavery with Enthusiastic Consent etc. (In my book, DubCon does not existing in RL, but it is a useful tag to differentiate between fics you might enjoy reading and fics you want to stay away from).
